Hey there - can anyone please help? I am trying to locate my Great, Great Grandfathers brother William Henry Ashford 07/09/1860 to 08/06/1935. I know know my Great, Great Grandfather Benjamin Ashford and his brother were born in Featherstone NZ. His brother William later passed away in Taita NZ. The Death Certificate states he was married in Ch Ch to Christina Jensen and they my have had a daughter, but I can not find any trace of either in any of the databases. I am also having difficult trying to find where he is actually buried.
If anyone has any suggestions or could help. I would be very grateful.

Welcome to Rootschat :)
I can confirm that a William Henry Ashford died in 1935 and is buried at Taita Cemetery location M01.17.
Taita Cemetery do not yet have their records online, but are working towards having them available soon.

There's also a record of a Wm Henry Ashford buried at Taita Old Monumental, Lower Hutt on 10 June 1935.
NZSG show a Certificate with the name William Henry Ashford dated 31 Aug 1890. No event shown.

Is the death certificate you have, actually a "printout" (a photocopy of the registry entry) ?
If it is, then it will show in the column "living issue", the age of this child of William Henry (at the time of his death).
If you have that information, can you post it here, please ?
Sorry, not able to locate his wife, [but have possibly, found the daughter.]

PS: I can check the Taita Cemetery records and also see if there is a death notice. [Notices of that era though, tend only to mention the name of the spouse (i.e. names of children usually not included.) ]

Look up BMD for birth for Mabel Ashford and you will see mothers name as LIZZIE ALICE CHRISTINA
father not given but it matches a William Henry entry in Cert Coll NZSG 1890

I notice that Mabel Bailey Ashford's birth is dated 1952,it must be a transcription error surely?

I have already found this daughter - her marriage, death, cemetery record etc. (See earlier post.)

Yes, birth as above "Mabel Bailey ASHFORD - 31 August 1890".
The death index though gives her d.o.b. as "3 August 1890" and she is named only as "Mabel POPPELWELL.
[See also that John has found NZSG record "William Henry ASHFORD - 31 August 1890 - no event shown" ... but this would seem to relate to the daughter's birthdate. ]
She marrried as Mabel Baillie ASHFORD in 1907 to Ethelbert Adrian POPPELWELL.
There seems to be a Probate record at Archives NZ (Auckland) for her - death date 16 December 1984 - probate date is 1985.

The NZSG record does match with HEnry/Mabel/LIzzie
just need to select year only and can see which records are related

In response to Lu. The age of the daughter at the time of William Henry Ashford death was 44.

Thanks for the confirmation. Had just wanted to get an idea of the daughter's birth year as the (birth) record found, didn't actually include her father's name.
So yes, we can now say fairly confidently, that she was Mabel Bailey (or Baillee) ASHFORD who married POPPELWELL.
Not sure that we will be able to link you to her descendants, but will see what other information is available.

There are a handful of people by Mabels married name that would be worth contacting given the relative uncommon surname...they may know something

Thank so much for all your help. You have both supplied me with some really good leads and information that I should be able to re-start making progress.
Also thanks for the links to both family trees and Oldfriends. I have already emailed some one with the surname poppelwell and hopefully they may be able to help me further.

I have a few more snippets for you.
I checked the cemetery records for Taita - it appears that William Henry is buried in the area known as "Taita Monumental Cemetery" otherwise also known as "Taita Old Cemetery". Plot 51 - A - C of E (Church of England section).
Sadly there is no headstone for him.
I made a check also for a death or funeral notice but didn't find anything.
There was however the following notice inserted in the "Bereavement - Thanks" section, two days after William's burial. I would like to think (given the unusual surname) that it was placed by his daughter Mabel ?
"MRS. POPPELWELL, (of) Hastings, wishes to thank friends and relatives, especially Mr and Mrs WEBSTER, for their expressions of sympathy, in her recent bereavement. "

Mabel Baillie Poppelwell is my great great grandmother. I am currently in the process of putting together a family tree also and have found ancestry.com of great use. Poppelwell being a rare surname means that links to records and other trees are easily made. If using oldfiends.co.nz to connect with relatives, try sue poppelwell (now Picot)(Mabel's grand daughter) as I am aware that she has compiled a fairly comprehensive family history through her own research.

At long last, a relative from the descendants of the Ashford family. It is really good to hear from you and thank you for getting in touch.
My Grandmother Amelia Kathleen Ashford was Mabel Ballie Ashford cousin. My Grandmother mother, Kathleen Ashford, was given a divorce from her husband and they came to England in 1913 when my Grandmother was a little girl.
When I started this family tree search, nearly year ago at the end of the month I always thought that my search would just lead to the Ashford burial sites and hopefully some newspaper clippings. I never believed that I would find any distant family relatives alive in New Zealand. So you can imagine my joy in finally typing this message to you. :)
