I have a marriage certificate for my gt grandmother in 1876. Her husband, Thomas Phillips is given as living at Hennddsfon, Llanfyhangel .
The Hennddsfon I assume is the name of a farm as he is down as a farm servant. But where is Llanfyhangel? I discover that there are several places with a similiar name in Carmarthenshire. I think it must be in Carmarthenshire as they married in Newcastle Emlyn, and she was living and working in Cynwyl Elfed as a servant in 1871 - before her marriage - and her parents lived in Kenarth.
Any clues would be gratefully received.
Many thanks

what are the details for Thomas? Age? Father's name & occupation?
Newcastle Emlyn registration district covers parts of Carmarthenshire, Cardiganshire & Pembrokeshire
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/newcastle%20in%20emlyn.html
and covered Llanfihangel ar Arth
Where did the marriage take place? And could you give a ref for the couple in any later census entry?

Thank you for that - Llanfihangel ar Arth. That narrows it down a bit.
Up against a problem with Thomas! No father given on marriage certificate. Place of birth down as just Pembroke.
His wife was Margaret Jones b. 1849 in Manordeifi, Pembs. and Thomas was born 1858.
Can trace Margaret in census in 1881, 1891 and 1901 with her children, but each time she is down as head of household with husband's occupation as coal miner. No Thomas at home on night of the census. In the 1901 census she is described as widow.
So ... Lots and lots of Thomas Phillips scattered around Wales as boarders on the census nights. Could be any of them.
On the marriage certificate it says that the marriage was solemised at the register office in the district of Newcastle Emlyn. So I assumed that was where they married.
Brick wall or what!!

If you don't have him on a census, how do you know he was born in Pembroke(shire). The place of birth isn't shown on a marriage cert.
???

You are abolsutely right!
I went through all my papers today and there is nothing that mentions he was born in Pembroke. I think it was family heresay from many years ago and it just got accepted as fact.
So I do not even have that to help me search!
But thank you for making me check. It just proves how easy it is to merrily trot along a road without confirming things.
Check, check and check again. I will be more careful in future.

Is his age given as 18 at time of marriage? He could be hidden with a mother married to someone not Phillips in previous census entries.
If he was born in Llanfihangel Aberarth, you could ask the registrar to check. I think the registers are now in Carmarthen. Email
registrarsatcarmarthenshire.gov.uk
replacing at with @
Have you looked for baptisms for their children in case there's extra info on the entries?
-
Yes will do that. He was 18 on the marriage certificate so perhaps he was still living at home or nearby. I may be in Carmarthen next month so may try a visit to the record office. I always assumed that his mother's maiden name was Phillips but of course that might not be the case.
And as yet i have not been able to get baptism records of the children. But will try Carmarthen and see where I get.
Many thanks.

if you're going to the archives, it's best to book first to avoid a wasted journey and you need to take id.

I would agree with you that his mother's maiden name was probably Philips, but she could have married before the 1861 census.
