Title: cheshire records office
Post by: acorngen on Tuesday 20 April 10 13:13 BST (UK)
Is anyone likely to be going to the Cheshire Records Office in the next couple of days who could look at a marriage that took place in the Parish church of Portwood.  The marriage was between a James Waterworth and Elizabeth Cunliff and took place 28th Sept 1879.  I have th ecert in front of me however the copy is not a good one and I would hope the church record will be clearer.  All I need to know is what the condition of the groom is please.

It looks like widower to me which will be a shock as we expected this to be a first marriage.

Many thanks

Rob

In case, no-one is visitng the offices, I thought I'd let you know that  when my husband had problems with his Cheshire research he just rang up the offices and the staff were very helpful.  I'm sure as you have all the details of the marriage they would be able to read the certificate and give you the illegible information.

Lizzie,

I did that first and the woman on the phone told me they didn't have the records and in fact the Greater Manchester RO had them.  When I rang them they said sorry we don't have them Cheshire do.  So I rung them back and even after quoting Genuki at her she again said sorry we don't have those records GMRO do.  So I gave up and posted this request.

Rob,
below is the info from Access to Archives
 http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/records.aspx?cat=017-p229&cid=4-4#4-4
which confirms the records you want are held in Cheshire RO:

PORTWOOD PARISH RECORDS

Register of Marriages  P229/3397/2/4  Sep. 1878 - Jun. 1884

These documents are held at Cheshire and Chester Archives and Local Studies Service

Copies information: See MF 70/10

Politely ask they check that microfilm 70/10 is still there (as 1 or 2 did go missing).

Hope that helps

It's not me who wants the records, it's Rob. ;D  I'm sure he'll be delighted with the info you've found.

You could also e-mail Stockport Heritage Library,
The church will be St Paul's and the library have marriage records 1866-1897.

localheritagelibrary@stockport.gov.uk

The staff there are great and I think they will be more than happy to help.

Rolnora,

Thanks for that.  I did read on the GMRO site that the library was closed.  Is that the case or just an old statement?

Rob

Think it must be an old statement
I've just had a quick look on the website and there's nothing there about it being closed.

My thanks to all who responded.  The library got back to me today with the answer I sought and even supplied me information they had discovered on censuses which I alreaDY had.  Now that is what I call good service.

That's good.  My husband has had dealings with them too and has always found them very helpful.

Glad it worked out for you Rob.

Perhaps an email to CRO is in order to show them an example of excellent customer service from another authority.  ;)
