Title: Yelling Hampshire
Post by: GrantGen on Thursday 22 April 10 00:48 BST (UK)
I am trying to find a birthplace which is given in two census for a person as Yelling Hants.  I found one in Huntingdonshire/Cambridgeshire, but nothing in Hampshire.  Searching for this and variations ie Telling, Gelling, Helling etc produces nothing.

Thank you for any help.

Hi

Look at the Census again. Could it read Yelling Hunts [[Huntingdonshire ]

As I expect many people looking in censuses for rellies born in Huntingdonshire have found, it is quite common for 'Hunts.' to be misinterpreted as 'Hants.' , so that Ancestry then indexes them as natives of Hampshire.

I don't know of a place called Yelling in Hampshire nor can I find any trace on the maps etc.

I vote for Huntingdonshire too.

Thank you all.  EwshotLad, I re-looked at the Census.  The 1891 shows the husband as Hants, Fareham; then the wife as H-nts, Yelling.  There is the checkers line across where the a or u is.  But the fact that the census taker wrote out the county name rather that ditto marks or Do, would indicate that it was different from Hants i.e. Hunts.

However, in the 1901 Census, there is the same arrangement, but ditto marks were used to indicated the wife's county the same as the husband's.

I guess the root I will have to go is try the 1911 Census and/or the birth cert of their daur.  I am pretty confident now that it is Huntingdonshire and may forestall the expense at this time.

Cheers
Tom

Yelling, Huntingdonshire is in Caxton registration district.  There's a likely looking marriage in 1883 registered in Caxton   :)  .

Galium, brilliant - thank you.  The marriage comes up with my ancestor James Richard GRANT and his bride Mary KING.  I was able to find Mary's birth and follow her and her family through the '61, '71 & '81 Census. All confirm Yelling, Huntingdonshire as the birth place.
