Title: Lookup Thomas ADAMS 1832 Corkenhoe
Post by: MysticBreeze on Saturday 24 April 10 07:57 BST (UK)
I'm not sure if Corkernhoe belongs in Herts or Bedford but I cannot find the birth of Thomas Adams who was reputed to be born or baptised in December 1832 in this parish.  His father's name is possibly Thomas.  I do not know if mother's name and am hoping to establish this was a birth or baptism record.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you  :)

Hi,

Cockernhoe is part of the parish of Offley so I'd expect to find his birth there. I had a look in Offley IGI and found a bunch of Adams children mostly of William and Rebecca Adams. This could be a possibility but no mention of Thomas Adams. There is a marriage in that parish between William Adams and Rebecca Spring on 20 Nov 1830. However another way you could establish his parentage is by reading the census.

Had a little search on the 1851. Found this Thomas Adams looking at index:

Thomas Adams,  18, Administrative area: Hitchin, Hitchin

Perhaps someone could confirm this who has access to the 1851 census.

Yes this is Thomas - he was a boot/shoe maker.

I was thinking if you looked at 1841 census you might be able to find him with his parents.

No thats the thing - I can't find him in the 1841 census.  Another person also had a look trying her way of finding people - with no luck.

Ok I searched for Thomas Adams and varients on findmypast 1841 census. It came up with this:

Household     ADDAMS, Thos     1832     9      M     Hitchin     Hertfordshire

If I had the credits I would have a look but unfortunately can't. This looks promising though.

These are others living nearby with spelling Addams:

ADDAMS, George     1827     14      M     Hitchin     Hertfordshire
ADDAMS, John    1796    45     M    Hitchin    Hertfordshire
ADDAMS, John    1829    12     M    Hitchin    Hertfordshire
ADDAMS, Mary Ann    1826    15     F    Hitchin    Hertfordshire

Thank you for this.  I'm making a note to research this.  Is the same family together in 1851?  If Thomas is missing then its a definate possibility.  We had Thomas's father as being Thomas ... maybe this incorrect (no name for mother).

I just had a look in the new Pilot Search for the LDS website ... there is a Thomas ADAMS born 1832 in Kings Walden in Hitchin to Thomas ADAMS and Letty.
This seems more like him given Thomas is written down as his father's name as a note on records I have.  What is Letty short for?   Could they be on the 1841 census?

Letty = Letitia?

Yes possibly.  The names Mary Ann and LETITIA are names of Thomas's children but the first born daughter was named Katherine!!  His marriage cert says his father's name was Thomas who was a farmer.  Other children he named were William, John, Kathreen, Thomas, Joseph (after his wife's father) Annie Elizabeth (Annie after wife's mother), George, and Louisa.

OK I've found more on the Pilot Search LDS website - its got so much more information than previously.

Thomas Adams born 1832 brothers and sisters are: John 1829, Jesse 1834, George 1827, James 1819, William 1824, Mary 1821, Daniel 1817 and Letitia 1837.  This is the correct family.  Parents Thomas and Lettice Adams.

Can they be found on the 1841 and/or 1851 census for Hertsfordshire (Kings Walden)? :)

I don't have a current subscription to any census websites, but I would just add a note of caution that Cockernhoe and King's Walden are extremely close to the county boundary with the parish of Luton in Bedfordshire - I have examples of families who appear in the parish registers of King's Walden but appear in the censuses living in Luton and vice versa.  Don't forget to check Bedfordshire if they aren't in Hertfordshire!

Totally agree.
Kimpton is also mentioned and for the same reasoning.

Thomas's father's name is James Adams, 1808-1884

His mother's name is Hannah North, 1806-1898

Best wishes, Stella Jones
