I need help looking up the birth of Henry Persse de Burgh , Jersey in either 1866 or 1868 ,,,,please ??????? This would probably be found under 'D' in the registers.

Hi Mary
I'm afraid I can't see this birth in the index. I've searched through all the B's as I assume Persee was a second name.

Thank you so much Stewart,i
I only found out recently he was born in Jersey, from his Army records. I usually look up the name under 'D' for de Burgh, Yes indeed the Persse was a second Christian name and nothing to do with his Surname. ( his mother was a Persse before getting married )
I think the family must have been there with the Army.
Thank you again for your help.

No need to start a new topic- I've merged your latest post with the existing thread and changed the title to de Burgh.

Hi Mary
I'm afarid that even with that specific date I can't see anything either under the D's or the B's.

The "surname" de Burgh will always present difficulties because originally it will always have been preceeded by another name. Before the advent of surnames this would have been at least a christian name but often also Fitz "somebody" or some other form of "son of" "somebody". The problem is if and when these other names were dropped, which was often relatively recently.
This means that you need to search for surnames where "de Burgh" is proceeded by another name. "de Burgh means from the borough or walled town.

Hi David,
I am aware of this , but the family have used the surname 'de Burgh' since at least 1830's and I have no problem finding other member of the family under 'de Burgh'. It is just my husband's grandfather I am chasing for 20 odd years.!!!!!!!!!!!
Only found out through Army records , he put on the forms for joining the army , that he was born in Jersey. Hope dashed again....

Mary,
I am familiar with the DeBurgh and Persse names. I have Persse ancestry that goes back to Galway. I am familiar with a DeBurgh Fitzpatrick Persse, who came from Moyode Castle - Galway.
Could you let me know what were the parents names to the DeBurgh your looking for. A lot of names in the Persse family were handed down and it is very difficult to understand who was who, what era they were from and not knowing the parent's names. It is a major trap within this family.

Hi,
The Persse part of the family is a Leut. Henry Dudley Persse, born 1810c. Galway (no proof).
He Married in Dec,1835 Eliza LOPDELL from Galway. They moved with the army to Mauriyius.
The De Burgh part was 'adopted' in 1874 !!!! The name was le Brun before that !!!!!!
