Title: Providence Place, Hull
Post by: mrsgrumbly on Sunday 02 May 10 02:03 BST (UK)
I am trying to locate whereabouts in Hull this address was. I cannot find it on current street maps.

On the 1871 census my 2xgreat grandparents Alice and Thomas Biggins were residing there.

By the 1881 census my 2xgreat grandma is still on the street at no 4 with my great grandfather, Thomas William Biggins and his siblings Alice, Richard and John. At no 6 is my 3xgreat grandma Eleanor Carr.

Is anyone able to identify the area of Hull where this address was and what if anything is there now. Does anyone have any info about this locality at the relevant time?

I am visiting Hull next week and am anxious to visit as many places linked to my family as possible.

Thank you in anticipation

Hi

If you google 'Porter Street, Hull' on google maps it will give you the approx vicinity where Providence Place was. I cannot see it at the moment but all other streets are there that was mentioned on the enumerators route.

Porter Street, Adelaide Street, Gt Thornton Street, William Street, Walker Street and Waverley Street.

Porter Street was documented before Providence Place and then Porter Street again after mentioning a pub, but at the moment I cannot make it out what it says - will get back to you on that.

Hi

It looks like Porkand but I think it may possibly mean 'original Portland Arms' so that isn't much help either as it sounds as though it was no longer called that in 1881. It was at 123 Porter Street.

White's Directory of Hull 1882
Page 104

List of SMALLER STREETS, LANES etc with reference to their respective situations

Providence Place - Durham St, Tinkle St, Edgar St, Chapel St, Brook St, Chariot St, North St, Porter St, Spring St, Pease St, Wood's In, Alfred St

Providence is the SMALLER STREET. If you check each of the streets listed against it in the main Hull Sreet Directory (starts page 110) it lists the businesses against each address.

So much depends on what has survived the wrecker's ball these last 120 years!!

Happy hunting on your forthcoming visit to Hull
regards

Do a search on Rootschat for Providence Place, use the search tab at top of the page, there was a thread on the same subject a couple of years ago

Previous thread appears to suggest more than one Providence Place in Hull

Probably a little late to reply to this, but one of my Ancestors was born 1910 in Providence Place, Spring Street in Hull. Spring Street is round the back of St. Stephens Shopping Centre.
