Hi Mick

Thank you for your help and the information. Please can i ask you another question which no one can answer. My grandmother was Mary Alexandra Dix born 25/02/1902 at Streatley Farm, Streatley, Berkshire England, in registration district Bradfield, birth in the sub-district of Bucklebury. Father is William Dix and mother is Ann Lowe. When Mary married William Brown on the 20 of May 1923 at Aston Tirrold Berkshire her father is William Dix. Mary is not on the 1911 census with her family  There is a family story that Mary was giver away to a family member by the name of Painton. On the marriage cert  for Mary and William the witness are Gladys May Dix and Thomas Henry Painton .My question is how do i find out what the family link with the Painton are and why give her away. No one in the family when i was a child was called Painton ,and i have not found a link. It has taken me about 18 months to get this far with Mary and her family so thank you for your help
Thanks Sandy
Ps Mary and William lived all there married lives in Aston Tirrold Berkshire England

marriage
thomas henry painton
y.o.r. 1898
qtr; jan/feb/mar
dist; wantage
vol; 2c
page; 435
on the same page anna lay/say
there is an ann lay born in wantage in 1868
so it seems as if this thomas did marry annie lay and not annie dix
furthermore there is no ann/annie dix born in berkshire in the right time frame

also there is no birth of a mary painton in the right timeframe
so it looks as if the mary painton found on the 1911 could well be mary dix
here is the birth reg if you do not have it
name; mary alexandra dix

Hi Mick

Thank for the information i think that Mary Dix and Mary Painton are the same person. I know that when Mary married William Richard Brown she when under the name of Dix . I think when she was a child she use the name Painton and then as a adult she use the name Dix. Sorry i did not reply yesterday but i was ill all day.

Hi Sandy,

This may be worth further investigation:

There is a marriage in 1885 for a Hannah Dix and Isaac Lay in 1885 in Abingdon

There is a birth for a Hannah Dix in 1864 in Abingdon (reg district for Tubney)

There is a death for an Isaac Lay aged 34  in 1895 in Wantage

In the 1881 census Jane Dix & some of her children are living in Abingdon Rd and  the next household are Charles & Emily Lay and family (perhaps some connection to Isaac Lay)

In the 1891 census there is an Isaac Lay with, wife Annie Lay, born Tubney c1866

Couldn't find Isaac Lay c1861 in the 1901 census nor an Ann/Annie Lay c1866 in Tubney

In the 1911 census Anna Painton (Lay) is recorded as being born in Tubney
and so is William Dix. (Perhaps the are siblings and Anna/Hannah married Isaac Lay then when he died she remarried to Mr Painton, if so then William's daughter Mary would have been given to his sister Anna/ Hannah).
(William did have a sister, Ann/Anna/Annie/Hannah)

The 1911 census records that William Dix and his wife had 8 children, I could not find any Dix children born after 1911 with mother's maiden name Lowe so unless they had children born dead or were counting miscarriages it looks like they didn't have the 13 children that you mention.

Sorry but I only have access to the 1881 census and the 1911 census so I can't have a good look around the other census years, maybe someone else could have a look for you.

Chris

I've been having a look around a bit because Thomas & Ann Painton married in 1898 and on the 1911 census they have a son John Painton born c1897 Abingdon. (This made me think perhaps he was not their biological son and that may be like Mary, he was born to other parents)

I can't see a birth reg. for a John Painton in Berkshire in this time frame but there is a Charles Parker birth reg. Dec Q 1896 Abingdon 2c 302

On the 1901 census they have a nephew living with them born c1897 Abingdon.

This makes me think that Charles Parker became John Painton as both were recorded as born c1897, Abingdon.

I thought that if I could find a link between a Dix and Parker, this might help prove the link with Ann Painton (Lay)

I checked to see if there was a link for Parker/Painton and found nothing.

On further investigation I have found that Martha E Dix recorded on the 1871 census with her mother Jane Dix (nee Bestley) was the daughter of Jane Bestley (before she married William Dix). Martha Eliza Bestly's birth reg. Sept Q 1861 Abingdon 2c 251. (Jane married in 1862). (No birth reg for a Martha Dix in this time frame)

Martha Eliza Bestley married in 1884 Mar Q Abingdon 2c 425 to Charles Parker

Martha Eliza Parker died aged 35 in June Q 1898 Abingdon 2c 180

So I think that Charles Parker born in 1896, recorded on he 1901 census was the nephew of Anne Painton and that when Martha died her son Charles was given to Thomas & Ann Painton to raise.  If this is correct then it  would mean that Ann Painton was the sister of Martha Bestley (Half sister, if William Dix wasn't Martha's biological father).

So perhaps Anna Painton could not have children and "adopted"  Mary & John Painton.

Hi Sandy,

The 1911 census records a Harold John Wheeler aged 13, born Hon Minster Lovell, living with his parents John James Wheeler, aged 47, born Aston Berkshire, Farm Labourer and Alice Sabina Wheeler aged 38, born Oxon, Coke Thorpe, in 4 rooms at Baker Street, Aston Tirrold, Wallingford Berks. It states that his parents had been married 11 yrs and had 2 children but that only one was still living at this time.

This chap fits the age and location of your Harold John Wheeler.

Hi Mick,

There is this birth reg:
Harold John Hicks Whitney 3a 946 Sept Q 1897

Also this marriage reg:
Alice Sabina Hicks + John James Wheeler Wallingford 2c 673 Sept Q 1899

Maybe Harold John Hicks is the same person as Harold John Dix and Alice Sabina Hicks was the mother of this child.

Can you see a connection between Charlotte Dix and Alice Sabina Wheeler (nee Hicks) in any of the census  years?

Chris

Hi Mick

Had a look on the 1911 census and Harold Dix is recorded with his parents John & Charlotte Dix. There is a birth reg in Whitney for a Harold George Dix in 1896 so I now think that this Harold Dix is a separate person from Harold John Wheeler (possibly born Harold John Hicks) as  both Harold's are recorded on the 1911 census.

Hi Mick

There is a marriage reg. for a Richard Colin in 1879, Wallingford, also a Martha Wheeler on the same page so if this is the marrige for the Colin couple you have posted in the 1901 census then maybe Martha Colin (nee Wheeler) was John James Wheeler's sister.

Please can you see if they are recorded together in any of the earlier census records?

think this is probably martha

martha age 6. b. ditto. daughter
frederick age 2. b. ditto. son

HI MICK
Thanks for the information it helps fill in a lot of gaps. I do have another question to do with the Wheeler on a 1911 census RGNUMBER RG14 PIECE6508 it has the following information
 address Baker street Aston Tirrold

Wheeler John James head age 47 birth year 1864 farm labourer born berks Aston
Wheeler Alice Sabina wife age 38 birth year 1873 oxon coke thrope
Wheeler Harold john son 13 birth year 1898 minster lovell
Then it listed
Wheeler Edith relative 28 birth year 1883 born glos gt barrington
wheeler Emily relative 5 birth year 1906 born glos gt barrington
wheeler lily relative 4 birth year 1907 born glos gt barrington

In an early message there is a Edith Wheeler born 1888 ref RG12/993/91/45
i do not think this is the same Edith Wheeler but i have not been able to find the three Wheeler relatives.

Thank you for all the information Mick and also thank you everyone for all the information you have send sorry it is a join message but i am  babysitting  and my 4 year grandson has just got up.
Best wishes Sandy

Hi Sandy,

I am at my local library and have just looked up the census images for Edith Wheeler c1883.

It looks like Edith was the daughter of John James Wheeler's brother Thomas Wheeler c1848

1891 census
Thomas Wheeler aged 43, born c1848 Aston Tirrold, Living at (what looks like) Finch's Farm Aston Tirrold with wife Rachel, born c1848 Stanton Harcourt, Oxon and daughters Edith, born c1883 Aston Tirrold and Fanny born c1884 Aston Tirrold. Thomas was recorded as a Farm Labourer.
Class RG12 Piece 985 Folio 6 Page 5

1901 census
Thomas, Rachel and Edith are recorded at Robert's Farm Aston Tirrold, Thomas is recorded as a Groom and Gardener (Domestic)
Class RG13 Piece 1138 Folio 10 page 12

I think you will find that the 1911 census records Edith as being born in Aston and that only Emily and Lily were born in Gt Barrington Glos.

Perhaps Emily & Lily were Edith's children!

Chris

Hi Sandy. Regarding your Dix family history. It would appear that we are both decendants of William Dix and Martha Dawson from Northmoor.

I wonder if my late father William Norman may have contacted you at some time.

I would be really pleased to hear back from you.

Best wishes

Bryan

Hi
I know it has been awhile but i wont to put my grandmother family to bed.

I know from help that i have had in the past that my grandmother Mary Dix born 1902 was in 1911 living at The Blue Boare Inn North Heath Newbury and that she was using the name Mary Painton. I now know with the help that i had from you all in the past that she was given to her Aunt to bring up. I know that Thomas Painton and Anna(also some time down as Hannah or Ann Dix) Painton also had with them John  (born Parker son of Martha Dix and her husband) Painton. I have know been told my my Aunt that Mary talked about a sort of brother called Jack Painton. I have so far not found a Jack Painton do you think and John was maybe called Jack in the family. I was wondering is there anyway and can found out more about my grandmother life and what the inn was like when she lived there Thank you for your help so far

     Thank you Sandy

PS  did get down last year  to see what was the Blue Boaree inn know but  did not have a lot of time as we were down on family matters

Hello
Don't know how long ago you posted this, but I can tell you that Jack Painton was my grandfather and Mary was my great aunt Mary.  Jack Painton is listed as John Painton in the 1911 census and Charles Parker (nephew) in the 1901 census.  His mother was Martha Dix (born Martha Bestley in Abingdon workhouse) and re-named Martha Dix when her mother married William Dix.  Jack and Mary Painton were in fact cousins.

Hope this helps
