Title: Overtons in Astley
Post by: moverton on Monday 03 May 10 14:48 BST (UK)
Hi all

I am stuck in Astley with my 4th GGrandfather John Overton. He died in Astley in 1840 but was born in Lower Sapey (Sapey Pritchard) in 1775. Does anyone have any ideas about how to go from here? I have the whole line in Astley at Priors Mill and through to me but no idea about how to find John's parents. There are no more obviouos Overton's on Family Search as most seem to be based in Salop.

Any ideas?

Much appreciated

mark

Thanks Jim. I have tried to find a bit more about John and Mary with no luck. No obvious Marriage record that I can see. I suppose that's happening when we get this far back

I found John O 1775 in the Worcestershire Quarter Sessions! Easter 1824: Theft of duck by John & Joseph Hickman from John Overton, Astley, yeoman, who found one in John Hickman's pocket.

I am descended from John Overton, miller of Astley Worsc.
He was born about 1775.
He married Mary Tolley at Tardebigg 5.4.1808 by Licence. He had an uncle Thomas Overton who lived in Tardebigg.
All his children were baptised at Astley, including his first-born Mary, who was baptised 4.10,1808 and from whom I am descended.  Mary married Thomas Cook and lived in Birmingham, but sent children back to be brought up at the mill, as she was widowed whilst she had a young family.  John died in 1840 at Astley, Mary had died two years before.  His death was registered by Mrs Henry Overton, which suggests he had a brother named Henry.
You suggest that he was baptised at Lower Shapey in 1775, but a John Overton baptised in1775 from lower Sapey was still alive in the 1851 census.
I am looking for the parents of John Overton with an Uncle called Thomas and a brother called Henry.

As I live in NZ I can't get to primary resources to research, so would be grateful for any assistance.
Christine
