Where did you get the info re: children from?

Do you have the family on the 1911 census?  Were they in the IOM at that time

Mona was buried 8.10.1902

hi, carolew. thanks for the reply,my father told me he had two aunts  in iom, that they were called christine and mona, it seems that my g.grandfarther called another daughter mona after losing one.i was told that these two women went back to the iom and had a small hotel or b&b. i have them in the 1911 census living with my g.grandfather in barrow in furness lancs, but mona as a different date and place of birth. it gives christine as born in iom 1903/04? the entry was very faded, mona was buried in october 1902. but as i say she is not the one in the 1911 census. the info on the children came from a maureenc on the manx heritage site.( www.isleofman.com) peter born 1879 was a china and carpet dealer, and may have been on the iom selling for a time. thanks again for your reply if i can give any more info please ask, thanks..rob g

I think you need to check that 1911 census entry - there is no Christine in that household and Mona's parents seem to be Charles aged 36 and Ann aged 39

It seems Charles and peter Mitchell were brothers

Charles has a daughter Mona

Maybe Peter did but there is no sign in 1911 - although Peter and wife had 12 children but only 6 survived

Peter and Charles had similar occupations and Charles had at least 6 children -2 of them were born IOM-where out of peter's survivng children only Christine was b IOM

Peter Mitchell b 1880 is shown as b Skerton nr Lancaster - not Bury.  The 2 places are over 50miles apart

However - the 1881 shows him and brother Charles b Bury

Christian/Christine is shown as aged 9 - parents Peter & Mary

IOM records show her as Christina b 1903/4 Douglas

Mona was b 1902 IOM and died October 1902 IOM as per my reply above but no parents shown

The other Mona is shown as aged 8 parents Charles & Ann but b Skerton

Peter & Mary Mitchell were living in Blackburn in 1901 and Barrow in Furness in 1911 so their stay in the IOM appears to be a short one as they had a daughter b 1906/7 in Ulverston

many thanks to all who gave time to search and reply, i it was helpful and has made things a bit clearer. although i woud still be interested to know more about peter mitchell stay on iom. i will to try and answer some of the questions raised, first peter mitchell  b.1879 wife mary, were  romany, and lived in a caravan lots of the time, but also had houses,so thats why he is found miles apart at times, charles is peters brother,i did not know he had lived on iom.in the 1911 census christian, is christine, and living at 6 union st barrow. mona is with charles as said,in 1901 census charles is down at 116 main st lancaster.so must have moved soon after to iom.i was led to belive mona was christines sister.maybe my dad got it wrong, but there is a romany thing that may give some light,if room was tight children were moved within the family.i had a cousin bill who lived with us for months at a time.and people thought he was my brother? also we do give the same name to our children time after time. there are six robert mitchells in carlisle alone, all full cousins. one lived with us for years. as we moved about children may not see parents for a long time, and could be on censuses as family members.but i think mona must be charles mitchells daughter, and peter lost his mona. i have a picture of rebecca age 15. and christine. taken 1912. so thanks once more for all interest shown. and as i said if there is any more info i would be greatful for it. sorry to be so long, .. rob g

Hello Rob
I’m in very early stages of looking into our family history but I’m related to William Mitchell through my maternal grandmother Bessie.  She was also a resident in IOM and I knew a Mona there.

Anyway, just thought I’d say hello. I’m on FB Romapaloma Blanca

My married name is Newburn andI live in Blackpool. Grew up in Blackburn.

Roma 😊
