Title: James Reney
Post by: Elizabethanne on Monday 10 May 10 14:38 BST (UK)
Hi,
I am looking for the baptism of James Reney born about 1790. His marriage certificate records him as being from Harrington, Cumberland and a census has him being born in Harrington Cumberland.

Could anyone help me find out anymore about him please?

Many thanks

Welcome to Rootschat

If the spelling were slightly different - James Rainey - could this be an option  ???

Hi,
I guess that shouldn't really be a problem. James Reney married in Flintshire North Wales in 1815 so I suppose the person who wrote the record could have written the surname the way it sounded to him/her.

The only clue I have with regards to his family is that a Charles Reney was present at his marriage. Record doesn't state if Charles was his father or brother though.

James was a Mariner if that is of any use.

According to cumberlandroots, Harrington records should be on IGI but there is no record of him there, only Workington and Whitehaven at about the right time. Harrington is equidistant between the 2.

Lets use your petrol Bob, Harrington - Whitehaven 5.9 miles and Harrington - Workington 2.5 miles  ;D

Thank you both so much for taking the time to help - it is really appreciated.
Since my last post I have discovered that I made a mistake in saying that a Charles Reney/Rainey attended the marriage of James. It was in fact an Andrew who was at the wedding.
I looked at the website you very kindly gave me and found that an Andrew Rainey was the father of James. I am now very intrigued and am wondering if this could be the breakthrough I have spent years looking for.
Again many thanks to you both.

Hello Elizabethanne,

Excellent News.  Wondered if that was one of those surnames that varied slightly over the years.  The occupation of Mariner in that time frame also fits very well for the area. I started looking for a marriage of an Andrew but could'nt find anything.  :(  However, you have got some brothers and a sister for James   ;D

So you had rich rellies with yachts Bob  ;)

Brothers and a sister? Would you have their names please? Only James was listed an the website you gave me.
If any of the Reney/Rainey family are still about I want you to know that James did very well for himself and was greatly respected here.

I can't thank you enough for all the information you have given me. I think I will try to make the trip to the Records Office later in the year. This is the only lead I have and I want to chase it up.

Bet you didn't think when you got up this morning that you would be able to make anyone this happy!

Again many thanks
Liz

Hello Liz.

Your most welcome.

How about - because it costs nothing to ask - e-mailing Whitehaven Records Office - address on this link. (Nothing ventured - nothing gained)  ;D

Thanks for that I will ask them in my e-mail. I still think I would like to come up to Cumbria though as I would really like to see the area in which my GGGG Grandfather was born and grew up.

I especially want to see where he would have sailed from and what sort of cargo the ships carried. Do you think the Records office might have some of the ships logs?

Have a look at Mags' Cumberland shipping link, Liz.
Dettori, we called it a yacht but more of a rowing boat same as the chateau in France. 8)

Hi Bob and Dettori
I hope you both see this as I believe I have made a discovery today that confirms the info you gave me yesterday.

I went onto the Welsh Mariners Index site and found this reference to James Reney/Rainey, "James Reney was born at Harrington Cumberland on 4th February 1790, the elder son of a Master Mariner and ship owner. As a young man, already the Captain of the Brig 'Ann' he must have sailed into the then new port of Connah's Quay, where he eventually settled after marrying a local girl, Sarah Tellett at Hawarden Parish Church on 13th August 1815. They raised a family of eight children, so starting the Reney dynasty of Master Mariners, ship owners and entrepeneur."

Thank you both so much, without your help and encouragement I may never have thought to search Mariners databases!

That is great news and hopefully you will be able to find more on Andrew as well  ;D

I will certainly try to find out more about Andrew, his wife and children. I have been looking today but so far nothing. As you couldn't find a marriage for Andrew and Elizabeth in Harrington I will need to widen the search. So far I have found the name Reney/Rainey cropping up in Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Man. A search of the 1841 census for England and Wales didn't produce either of Andrew's other two sons Robert and Andrew.

Still not to worry - somewhere out there are the records I need!

Hi Liz
Wondered if you might be able to help me ?
I am just starting off trying to trace the history of my home, we moved here in August this year, and I have just been given the deeds, which show that a James Reney (died 1904) must have owned the house at some point, and it passed through his trustees up until 1942, when it was sold.

I have searched the censuses but cant find any record of any Reneys living in the house, or indeed, find the house name listed on the census as yet, it might be that the Reneys owned the house but rented it to tenants ?

Anyway, my house is Wirral View, on Golftyn Lane in Connahs Quay, have you come across anything in your research which might shed any light on this ?

Thanks

Sue

Hi Elizabethanne

I'm descended from James' sister Isobel / Isabella Reney. She married a John Smith but luckily Reney as a middle name was used fairly often so it made them quite easy to track. It was last used as a middle name by my great uncle, 4 generations later!
