There appears to be a lot of them living in and around Ross-on-Wye, especially Bridstow, Peterstow and Sellack.
In Littlebury's Directory & Gazeteer 1876-7 there is an entry:
Colcombe James, freeholder
Colcombe James, jun., assistant overseer for Sellack, Peterstow, and Bridstow, Picts cross
Colcombe Mrs. James, schoolmistress and organist

I have just found this thread.  I have Colcombe in my tree but without the 'e' and from Wales but will let you know if I come across anything that might be of interest to you.  As yet haven't made it back to 1700s.

By any chance would they be from the Pontypridd, Merthy area.
If they are will maybe able to find some missing pieces.
Some kept the e, others did not.
Thank you treddz

Hiya Treddz ....My gg grandfather Daniel Oakes married Marianne Merrick who was from Ocle Pychard in Herefordshire...here in Garston,Liverpool in 1875 ....
his Daughter
Beatrice Oakes b 1884 Garston , Liverpool...married
Edgar COLCOMBE b 1885 Weobley,Herefordshire ....in 1913
Beatrice died and then Edgar married her sister Sarah Oakes( b 1890 Garston ) in 1919
I am convinced that the Merrick and Colcombe family from around that area were somehow related........anyway...I know it is not the 1700`s ...but....I would be very grateful if you come across COLCOMBE from Weobley in your research you would contact me....allan oakes

Hello Treddz,

Sorry to have taken so long to respond.  The only Colcomb I have found so far has been transcribed as coming from Aberdare and sometimes Abbey Dore, he was William Colcomb.  I really haven't done too much research in this area yet so I am afraid I can't be of much help at present.

Regards,

Hello Garstonite,

I am sure somewhere in the deep recesses of my memory (!) I have seen Weobley in connection with Colcomb(e).  I will try to recall where and get back to you.

Regards,
ANYAS

In the 1841 census nearly all the Colcombe's are in Weobley, Hfds.
And here - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/
you will find baptisms and marriages back as far as 1654.  Fred

Don't know if its' of help, but there was a Colcombe family at Kingstone in 1960's.  That's near Abbeydore.  The son married a widow of the local shopkeeper (Mrs Climo) in the 1970's.

Hi, I'm decended from a Colcomb family in Hereford. They were blacksmiths there.  A while later they moved to the Rhondda/Aberdare area and worked in engineering to do with mining there.  My great-great grandfather then lived in Wiltshire and worked for GWR as did my grandfather.

Hi Glen,

We must be related as I'm sure my gang lived at Mountain Ash for a bit too (I haven't done any research for a year or three so I'm running on memory power here!)  It was after they moved away from Hereford but were still working as blacksmiths.  Shortly after though I think they moved over to the mining side of things, probably fixing the coal trucks etc .  Any engineers or something like in your branch?

Cheers
Helen

Hi helen,

Thanks for the reply, nice to hear from you. What era are you focusing on hear as the engineering side of things isn't ringing a bell, but the mining is, my grandfather ( david colcombe who was married to my nan, agnes colcombe ), was in the war first, but then moved into mining. I have,nt done any research really into the family history, but i have to say after coming across this site and forum, i'm thinking of going for it so maybe we could help each other out in tracing our roots.

Hope this helps.

Regards.

Glen.

Hi glen thanks for getting back to me so soon. Well I'm struggling lots with her family as there seems to be two sets of Colcombes from around mountain ash. I see you mention your grandfather was a David Colcombe I've not come across him yet so do you mind me checking some dates with you. My friend Sarah Colcombe lives in Swansea she is 46 and her dad is Royston Edwin Colcombe who is in his 80s his father I believe is Edwin Colcombe. Do you still live in mountain ash? I believe Roy has a sister still living in penrhiwchiba not sure if I spelt that right sorry. It would be great if you can share any info. Are you on ancestry? Thanks. Happy to add you on fb if you are on their?
Sam

Hiya sam, there are a few sets of colcombe's in mountain ash area, perthcelyn area, aberaman area as well. These are the ones i know of, there may be more when you start looking into it. Feel free to send me any dates you want checked and i'll see what i can clear up for you. I do still live in mountain ash (newtown), have done all my life. I'm 42. The names you mention in your post i'm not familiar with sorry. What is roy's sister's name who lives in the ceiber ? I have been on ancestry, but not for a long time now, this would be the best way to keep in touch with me through rootschat.

Thanks.

Glen.

Hi glen sorry for not being in touch for a while. I've come back to the Colcombe tree to try gather more information. You say that you still live in mountain ash do your parents originate from their too? I'm just curious on this as I've met a Haydn Colcombe online that says his dad was from mountain ash but moved to Birmingham and when he took his dad's ashes back in 2012 he said he met a taxi driver with the surname Colcombe was a cousin of his, would you know of anyone like this? Thanks

Hi Sammy-jo, sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this, due to my job I don't get online much so bear with me if you reply I will get there in the end !!

The couple of points you mention in your message are pretty close, my parents do originate from mountain ash, my father being from the penrhiwceiber area originally, and my mother from the newtown area, what is haydn colcombe's father's name, this will be interesting as my father had a cousin who moved to Birmingham, so there could be a connection here. Was the taxi driver a man or woman ? As I know a Nicola and michelle colcombe who both drive taxi's and I knew of a tommy colcombe who drove taxi's as well, he's now passed away sadly though.

Hope you get this message and it gives you something to work with in your search, get back to me with any info you have though and i'll see if I can expand on anything for you and give you as much information as I possibly can.

Regards.

Glen Colcombe.

Hi Glen sorry for the delay not been doing much of the tree lately but back at it now.

Can I ask your mother and father's name?

Haydn Colcombe's father's name is Idris Colcombe. Yes, I believe it was Haydn malcolm colcombe that went to Birmingham at 15 and died 2012. Haydn would have been Roy's 1st cousin (sarah's father - friend I am researching for).

As for the taxi driver names those names were never given to me unfortunately but I would imagine related as it was Haydn's son (also called Haydn) that informed me he came to mountain ash to scatter his dad's ashes in 2012.

Any further help you can be I would appreciate it. I am trying to locate the grave (including photo) of Roy's father Edwin Colcombe (died 1967) & his mother Beatrice Maud Colcombe (nee Hussey) (died 1935).

Thanks, Glen and hope to hear from you soon. Sammy-Jo x
