Title: Grave look up/Old Churchyard Bathgate.
Post by: Billy Anderson on Friday 14 May 10 12:34 BST (UK)
Hi,
Hoping to find a kind soul who would be able help me find the last resting place of my 4x Great grandfather.
John Anderson letter carrier born  Bathgate 21/05/1786.
parents James Anderson / Christina Wright.
He died  24/01/1860 Mid road Bathgate.

His 1st wife was Janet Binning and there last child born was Samuel Martin Anderson.
born Bathgate 17/06/1828.

He married his 2nd wife Janet Rae in Muirkirk, Ayrshire 14 months later.
I am hoping he was widowed and not that he did a runner! on his first family.

If I could find his gravestone( if one exists )then maybe I can solve this mystery.
He is supposed to be buried in Bathgate old church yard.

cheers,Billy.

Hi Billy, a few years ago I visited the old cemetaries in Bathgate looking for info on my own Anderson, Anthony and Little ancestors, I have just checked the photos I took at the time and there was no John Anderson among them, but there were quite a few missing or broken stones (my own ggrandmothers included). I phoned the local cemetaries office and they were very helpful. Alternatively have you tried this website http://www.uphall.org/ they are transcribing all the MIs and although they are not on line yet, the person on there says they would do a look up if you contact them

Hello,

I've got the MI's for Bathgate Kirkton Cemetery, and have searched all the Anderson entires and can't find any for your family, there's no Wrights, and though there are several Binnings they don't match with any Anderson's.

There are a couple of entries with only J Anderson and a date, but sadly they don't match your dates.

Sorry I couldn't find anything, regards .. Meg

Hi Billy, just realised I didn't put my dad and grandads full name
it was Hugh Bilsland Little Anderson.
I have a copy of LDS Temple record sent to me by a man in Salt Lake City and my great grandfather was Thomas Anderson b1825 also in Muirkirk I have just noticed on it that Thomas' parents are also on it and named as John Little & Margaret Smith

Hello Cauther Lassie,

I was hoping you may be able to check the MI's for Bathgate Kirkton Cemetery and see if there's the following:

John SPRATT (maybe (Sprott) Died: before 1881 (born c1820)
Margaret SPRATT (wife of above) Died after 1901 (born c1818)

and possibly a Malcolm FINLAYSON Died: before 1861 (born c1813)

Kind regards

Libby

Hello Libby,

No Spratt/Sprott in Bathgate Kirkton Cemetery, but there is John Spratt, miner, living at Armadale buried in a common grave in Bathgate Glasgow Road Paulville Cemetery, he was aged 52 (1820), so could be your John, the grave reference is Section L Lair 173, there are 22 names associated with this grave.

Section T Lair 376 - Bathgate Glasgow Road, Johnston Cemetery
There is a John Sprott, Labourer, Mossbank Cottage, South Street, Armadale, DOD 8/11/1926 aged 70.  Interred 11/11/1926 - charges £1/7/6 - motor hearse to private ground.

Same Lair
Ann McGarrity/Sprott, Mossbank Cottage, South Street, Armadale DOD 2/11/1931 aged 73.  Interred 5/11/1931 - charges £1/2/6 - hearse, widow of John Sprott, Foundry Workder.

Section U Lair 12 - Bathgate Glasgow Road, Johnston Cemetery
William Sprott, Miner, Parkview, Bathville, Armadale, DOD 27/12/1916 aged 57, COD Bronchitis, Interred 30/12/1916 charges paid 7/6.

Same Lair
Harriet Sprott, 34 Bridge Street, Stranraer, DOD 1/8/1955 aged 87, interred 3/8/1955 charges £3/0/0 (Mrs).

Section N Lair 73, Bathgate Glasgow Road, Paulville

Margaret Brand/Sprott, North Street, Armadale died 7/3/1905 aged 87, COD Senile Decay, Interred 9/3/1905, charges 5/-, widow of John Sprott, hearse to grave.

Same Lair
Donald Campbell Alexander, Armadale, DOD 20/2/1893 aged 0, interred 22/2/1893, charges 4/- child of Robert Alexander aged 10 months, carriage to grave.

Same Lair
James Finlayson, Grocer, Armadale, DOD 30/7/1899 aged 25, COD consumption, interred 8/8/1899 charges 7/- carriage from station.

Same Lair
James McGarrity Sprott, Armadale, DOD 25/7/1890 aged 1, interred 28/7/1890, charges 2/6, 2pm, carriage to grave, child of John Sprott, Miner.

No record any any Malcolm Finlayson I'm afraid.

Hope this helps, the John and William would be son's of the earlier John and Margaret Brand.

cheers ......  Meg

Hi Meg,

This is great. Thank you very much.

Would it be too much trouble to get more info on Section L Lair 173, and the 22 names associated?

I'm assuming John Spratt, miner, died in 1872?  This fits with the John Spratt I have, who was age 52 in the 1871 Census, living at Linlithgow Road, Bathgate.

The Margaret Brand/Sprott is correct too. She was age 83 in 1901 Census, living at North St, Armadale.

Yes, the ages for John and William Sprott also fit with what I have.

kind regards
Libby

Hello Libby,

Sorry for not getting back to you, we've been away for a few days.   Section L Lair 173 was a common grave, and it contains folk who couldn't afford a lair, therefore very seldom are there any family connections, everyone buried in a common grave would to all intents and purposes be strangers to each other.  17 of the internments were children mostly under 10 weeks old.  The rest were old folks who'd be paupers, or without family.   It's very sad when you see the common graves and the number of people who were interred in them.

cheers ....  Meg

Hi Meg,

Thanks for getting back to me with that explanation. Yes, it is very sad; it now makes me wonder about John Spratt's situation at the time of his death.

Thanks again for the previous info.

hello Margaret,

For some reason I didn't get a notification of your post, (seems to happen often), and yes I can tell you that Alexander Smith and his 1st wife Agnes Muir with son Robert are buried in South Church - Churchyard in Whitburn and there is a headstone.    He farmed Glenhutch Farm in West Calder then Tarareoch Farm in Armadale, where both he and his 2nd wife Marion Hamilton died.   His descendants still farm in the West Calder district today, his father James "The Wishawtown Poet" was the Grandfather of John Black, "Breich Water Poet", many of the descendants still live and the Smith's still farm at West Calder.

I've attached a report on what I know so far about the Smith/Blacks and other connections, which you could have had many months ago, if I hadn't been browsing today, I don't know when I would have seen your post.  Only hope that you get this one, and that the information is of some use.

cheers ....  Meg

Hi Meg

I was looking through the posts and came across this one. you seem to have access to some information on Bathgate burial records. I have two ancestors William Edwards and his wife Elizabeth (nee Hately) who were buried in the Old Churchyard Bathgate. I had assumed this to be Kirkton and had a wander through it a few years ago but found nothing. William and his family came to Armadale to work as miners, so probably didn't have a marked grave.

William Edwards died 6th Jan 1858 and Elizabeth Edwards (nee Hately) died 16 Dec 1855. Would there be any information anywhere as to the location of their final resting place?

Thanks

Hi All,

I am going to "lock" this post as it is becoming a general look up for all and sundry, and not it's original request. If you want a similar grave look up or search, please post individually, thanks.
