Title: Byrne family of Dublin help needed
Post by: prozac on Sunday 16 May 10 19:43 BST (UK)
My aunt has asked me to do some research for her, she can't remember her fathers birthday.  She is 80 this year, born 1930?.  Lived in Malahide all her life and as far as we're aware so did her family.

Her father is John Byrne, died in 1972.  I havent been given his age, I am waiting for a reply, I'm not sure if they know it or not.  He married Alice.

His parents were Micheal and Elizabeth burn, siblings were Michael, James and Margaret.  I have found a record on the 1911 census with all the names above, apart fomr Elizabeth and it states that Micheal is widowed, I'm so sure it's the right family because the details match, the family is in Yellow Walls, Malahide, which is where the family are now.

How would I find information before or after this?  Births of the children, death for Elizabeth, marriage for Micheal and Elizabeth?

I've always struggled with the irish side, I am in england and have traced my english side to the 1600's.

To start off see the topic 2 Minute Introduction to Irish Records (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,442233.0.html) for details on searching the BMD index, ordering certs etc..

The town of Malahide is in the registration district of Balrothery which may help to narrow down the correct registrations (as long as the events took place in or near to home).

The famlysearch index includes mother's maiden name in the births in the 1930s, which might help find you aunts birth, and start your research.

but note : you may not post details of living people on rootschat.

Once you know further details you could order possible birth certs , and then search for her parents marriage cert and continue back from there to confirm that the family you found on the census is the correct one.

One of the problems with the surname Byrne is that there are a few  variations - e.g. O'Byrne, Burns etc

Do you know John's wife's maiden name, and where they were married ?

No, I am waiting for a reply, although I may have a few certificates I was given last time I went to Ireland, I may need to dig them out :S Not sure if they will help.

All I know is Alice... I presume they married somewhere in Malahide.  I wish I had more info, but I just can't get in touch with the family right now. :( I'm not very patient... I get too carried away with this :( lol

John Byrne burial here:

Many other Byrnes in the same graveyard may provide some clues.

I've seen that before, my uncle is on that page.  But thank you.

Now I've found most of my information through various sites on the net, so i think I have found his birthday, but now I wanna find out more :(

I cannot find the death of Elizabeth.  By 1911 he is widowed, but I am struggling.  Her maiden name was Mahon, she was definetly the mother of Margaret (1897), John (1894) and James (1893), not sure about Micheal (1899), so inbetween that she dies...

Hi there, just wondering how you got on with your search.  I am a Byrne, orginally from Balgriffin.  My parents are (*) (originally from Coolock) and my mam is (*) (from Balgriffin).  Both my parents are still alive and they are 84 and 82 respectively and still live in Balgriffin.  My dad's sister Bridget Byrne married a John Henvey and although both have now passed on they lived all their married life on St. Brendan's Road in Coolock.  My mam and her family were born and raised in Balgriffin and I grew up all around the area of Balgriffin, Kinsealy, the Baskin and Malahide while my dad's family were all born and raised in Coolock.  I have attached a photo of what Balgriffin looked like in and around the 1950s and I believe it was taken from one of the upstairs windows of Campions Pub.

 If you are still looking
This seems to be the family in 1901 which confirms the Mahon connection
Any chance Elizabeth was the "orphant" Lizzie Hanlon then aged 4

note Michael's age was not transcribed correctly - shows 53 instead of 33

Hi,

You caught my interest... as for the Byrne's in Balgriffin! you should look a little further up the road.. just for the record... of those who lived in Limekilns... way back in the fifties... one of the best and most experienced drovers in his day, as a child I would watch him three carts in a row outside Campions Pub on his way back from market...  That man was a Byrne so look for Limekilns...

How about this? (how many are still alive) Michale O'Toole & Marian Byrne, Marie Caffery & Emonn Byrne, Joan O'Toole & Pat Byrne, John Henvy (D) & Bridget Byrne (D) Kathleen Henvy (D) & Partick O'Toole (D) are these names ringing a bell...

Are we kinsmen???

Hi there!

I have two John Henveys in my tree, one is my great uncle who married Teresa and one is my great grandfather who was married to Mary Ellen/Ellen Hughes.

Byrnes - I'm not sure on names as they were my uncles wifes family, she's getting on a bit now and can't remember much, she also lives in Malahide still so I havent seen her for years.

O'Toole, my father used to speak of an O'Toole, but he was never sure how he was related to her.

I do hope we find some connection!  If it helps, if you have rumours of the footballer Liam Brady being related to you, then we're probably related as he is my dads second cousin.

Unfortunately, I only know what my dad and few aunts have told me, I am 24 and never knew any of my Irish grandparents.

Hi there,

It looks like we are Kinsmen... The Byrne connection is there through my father Patrick (his sister Joan) and my late mother Kathleen (her brother John)who married Bridget and Pat from Coolock, My second cousin another O'Toole married Marian Byrne and my first cousin married Emonn Byrne...

As for that great footballer.... He is my first cousin.

Back to the Byrnes: there was a very magical and mystical woman, a spinster in her mid forties (back in 1956-9)who worked down on Rankins Fruit farm... I think her name was Sandy Byrne and she hailed from Malahide but often took the bus to Artane.  Somehow under all those rags there was a beautiful woman from time to time she would call me over, as she waited for the 42 CIE bus, and give me a tuppenny bit (a lot of money in those days) in remembrance of my Father...

There was also another Byrne he was a cooper cum bottler with Bob Campion, If I remember right he was somehow related to the Hickeys..

If you like I can give you a simple roll of the families who lived in and around Balgriffin between 1950-61... I would be pleased to help...

By the way before Balgriffin there was Balgriffin Park (The Hole in the Wall) so when you search the census search Balgriffin Park...

When looking for your Great Grand Aunts or Uncles search the names of the homes of the local Gentry: Sims, Hones, White, Trimbell, Pimms,  you just might find that they were in service in 1901..

Hello Prozac
I just came across your query. I knew John and Alice Byrne of Malahide, as my sister is married to their nephew. If you are not already in touch with your Malahide relations I could ask my sister if any of the family has the information you are looking for.

Good morning..

Last August I was fortunate enough to visit the Yellow Walls Cemetary..

I was just wondering if when your dad and mam passed away who came to posess all the photos and in particular the framed portrait sketch of Grand UncleJimmy O'Toole and the scrolled portrait sketch of Patrick O'Toole..  along with his original birth and death certificate and  the original  british army voluntary allotment book belonging to my Grandfather Joseph O'Toole..

I would really like to have these as well as copies of my beloved grandparents photo collection...

Think about it...
