Title: Rosina Bennett/Lowe/Hopkins/Bayliss
Post by: fizz83 on Monday 17 May 10 23:42 BST (UK)
I/m trying to find history on My great, great Grandmother, Rosina Bennett. Her details are quite a mystery. Birth Certificate shows her as born on 12th April 1880. Parents, George Bennet and Jane Lowe. Throughout her life she swapped and changed and maiden name on paperwork with both these surnames.
She married William Hopkins, who was born in Walsall 1871 and had 9 children that I know of. She left this family later in life and married Sydney Bayliss, and apparently had a further 2 children with him.

I'm new to searching the family tree, and if anyone has any information on an of the above names mentioned, I would appreciate hearing about it.

Rosina was born in Wrockwardine Wood, Shropshire. And most of the history of the above people is also thought to be living in this area.

Thanks, Rebecca

There's a public tree on Ancestry which has a Rose Bennett born about 1883 daughter of George and Jane and living in Wrockwardine. The tree owner is descended from a brother, William Henry Bennett Lowe so it looks like there is some illegitimacy. they don't have a marriage for George and Jane.

Do you have Rose on the 1891 census or do you want the details?

Ok, found George and Jane in 1881 RG11 piece 2681 folio 67 page 13

George Bennett b1844 Snedshill Shropshire, unmarried, bolter down iron works

Jane Lowe b1844 Donington, Shropshire, unmarried, general servant

Margt. A. Lowe b1877 Bilston, Staffs unmarried, sister (that's what it says)

I have to go out now but I'll have another look when I get back unless someone else wants to

No sign of Rosina in 1881 but FreeBMD has a birth for a Rosina Bennett JunQ1882 Wellington Sh 6a 822 which doesn't agree with what you stated in your first post, unless that was a typo  :)

Is this Rosinas marriage MarQ1900 Walsall 6b 885 under the name Lowe? (She's turning out to be like my great grandma  ;D )

Just found another tree featuring this family and I suggest you ignore them and follow the paper trail, checking everything with certificates and whatever documentary evidence you can find (census, parish register entries, wills etc)

Thankyou so much.

This information all seems to match up quite a bit.

What information I have, is that she has recorded her birthdates in both 1880 and 1882 in different times of her life, and used both Lowe and Bennett also at different times as her maiden name. This is were it has me puzzled  ???

So it does seem that this is all the same person.
I'm after information either siblings, or grandparents of hers behind George Bennett and Jane Lowe.

I'm very knew at tracing family history, and not really sure where I can access free information to validate details, so this has all been very, very helpful and I really appreciate it  :D

Thanks,

Rebecca

I would certainly have a look at Margaret A. Lowe being a potential sibling, I don't want to spoil your fun by doing too many look-ups for you but I'm happy to if you don't have access to the censuses.

www.freebmd.org.uk is useful for finding General Record Office references for post 1837 birth, marriage and death certs although it isn't yet complete.

www.familysearch.org is also useful for finding baptisms and marriages (mainly pre 1837 but it varies, it's really only an index and you can sometimes get a lot more info from the actual entry in the Parish Register). The Shropshire coverage is pretty good and as a general rule ignore submitted entries, extracted entries are more reliable but it's always best to check against the original.

There's also www.freereg.org.uk  and www.freecen.org.uk but their coverage is good in some areas and sparse in others.

There are a few George Bennetts so before 1881 it's tricky to determine which one is yours, the same goes for Jane Lowe but interestingly in 1901 George is in Ketley Brook with the family of a George Lowe and described as uncle and single. Do you want the details?

Yup  ;D  Ok here's George in 1901 RG13 piece 2563 folio 35 page 15

George Lowe, head, married b 1865 Donington, coal miner hewer

Lizzie Lowe, wife, married,b 1863 Wrockwardine Wood

Annie Lowe, daughter, b1886 Wrockwardine Wood

James Lowe, son, b1888 Wrockwardine Wood

George Lowe, son, b1889 Wrockwardine Wood (in 1891 he is shown as month old)

Frederick Lowe, son, b1893 Wrockwardine Wood

Lizzie Lowe, daughter, b1896 Wrockwardine Wood

Rose Lowe, daughter, b1900 Wrockwardine Wood

George Bennett, uncle, single, b1844 Snedshill puddler at ironworks

I had a look to see if I could trace George Lowe back to find his father to see if he was a brother of Jane (or his mother if he was illegitimate) but there are a few so it's hard to tell. If you wanted to pursue that line then, unless you have other info, you would need to get one of George and Lizzies childrens birth cert to confirm her maiden name then get their marriage cert for Georges fathers name. Hopefully then you'd be able to find George Lowe before his marriage and then track Jane down that way. Sometimes you have to zig-zag a bit  ;D .
