Title: Knilands
Post by: speedwobble on Thursday 20 May 10 00:01 BST (UK)
Is Knilands an Irish family name?  I have come across this name linked to my ancestors from Fermoy but it is not a family name I am familiar with.

It is a Donald Knilands marrying a Anne Eliza McConnell in 1860.  I have a feeling he may have been a soldier stationed at the barracks.

Had a look at the 1911 census and only 2 people in the whole of Ireland with that surname so its def not a regular Irish name anyway.

Check out this website and you can see Donald and Ann`s marriage record in the Church of Ireland Fermoy. You have to pay €5 to download the record which would hopefully have the parents names on it and if your lucky where Donald was from.

Cheers guys for all the help.  I think Donald Knilands may have been in the same regiment as my 3Gr Grandfather James Galbraith as they were both stationed in Fermoy at the same time.  Both were sergeants and if I'm right they married McConnell sisters.  I have never been able to confirm my 3Gr Grandfathers regiment so I'm hoping this is the lead I have been looking for.

I've been researching my Dublin based Nilands for a while. Whilst I've come across Nyland, Neiland, Neilan and even a Miland as a spelling variation, I've not come across Knilands in my research. May have to go back over some of my research as this raises another potential spelling variation I hadn't considered.....

I found Knilands in Co Tyrone using the IGI search but as of yet I can't link them to my family.

Best of luck with your search.

As far as I have been able to trace, the Knilands family name came from an area near the small village of Killeter, Parish of Termonomongan, County Tyrone. They were there until the late 1800's when they emigrated throughout the world (due to the potato famine I expect.) Some went to America (there is still some descendants with this name in Illinois), some to England ( The Knilands name has only got one lady remaining), Some to New Zealand (No Knilands Family name remains) and some to Australia (Only one Knilands family remains here).
I have not had the time to trace the name pre 1870's but have a good idea of the Australian side. There is a lady in NZ who has extensively researched the Knilands family name there. I have also spoken to both the lady in England and the family in the USA but they don't know much and have not done an extensive research of the name. Maybe when I get more time and money I will be able to expand my research.

I will be happy to post specific information if required.
Regards,
W. John Knilands

Hi,
Don't know if this helps but a Bridget Knilands was born to William Knilands and Bridget McGoldrick in Castlederg Co. Tyrone on 13 Jan 1874. I can also find two families with a slightly different spelling, KNIELANDS, in the parish of Termonomongan. Their details were taken from the 1841 and 1851 census.

I am a direct descendant of the Knilands you are referencing.  Yes, they were in the military in Barnard Castle.
