Hi,
We have a photo of a grave, but don't know if there's any family connection. However, it was amongst old family photos, so there must be some significance. I was wondering if anyone might be able to find out more about Michael please.
The inscription:
Sacred to the Memory of
Michael Fleming
Constable R.I.C.
And Formerly Sergeant, Irish Guards
Accidentally Killed on Duty in Ireland
22nd Nov 1920, Aged 39
R.I.P.
Erected by his Comrades
I found www.policememorial.org.uk - Const Michael Fleming, 31 - Died 22 Nov 1920 - road traffic accident at Dromoland, Co. Clare
many thanks,
Charlotte

Jim Herlihy's book "The Royal Irish Constabulary" gives his RIC number as 70213.
It says he was born in Queen's Co. 26/11/1888

Hi Charlotte
I am also researching Michael Fleming for my family tree.
I have learnt that there were 2 others killed & 5 injured when the lorry they were travelling in crashed into the gates of Dromoland Castle but do not know the exact reason for the crash.
I am struggling to find anything else at this time so would appreciate any help possible.
Regards
Annie

[Jim Herlihy's book "The Royal Irish Constabulary" gives his RIC number as 70213.
It says he was born in Queen's Co. 26/11/1888]
the child of Andrew FLEMING and Mary BRENNAN was born in early 1889
There is a Michael FLEMING born to John FLEMING and Catherine (Kate) PURCELL at Clough
on the correct date of Nov 26 1888
Their address is given as Cloneen, Co. Kilkenny which is right on the Laois (Queen's Co.) border
John FLEMING is shown as a Farmer/Carman
LINK to Civil Reference (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FB8W-SM5)
Edited
There are other children that I can see
Jane b Mar 18 1890 shown as Co Laois
Catherine b Oct 13 1891 shown as Co Laois
James b Jul 18 1893 shown as Co Laois
Richard b Jul 18 1895 shown as Co Laois
Andrew b Dec 12 1896 shown as Co Kilkenny
I wonder if Catherine and Richard are the children in the 1901 Census Return (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Queen_s_Co_/Doonane/Slatt_Lower/1645928/) originally shown?
Perhaps something had happened to their parents?
This could be Michael as a servant on 1901 census (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Queen_s_Co_/Dysartgallen/Knockbaun/1641639/)
-
Well the 2 families are obviously related as 2 there as nephew and niece,,,
-
Thank you!
Michael is definitely the son of John Fleming & Catherine Purcell from Cloneen.
Are the other children you listed definitely from the same parents please?

You'll need to look at them on Census..
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Queen_s_Co_/Doonane/Slatt_Lower/787317/ for example.
The shrink link doesn't seem to be working..
Just look for All Fleming, RC, born Queen's Co in the Census

There's plenty on the internet about the accident..
http://theauxiliaries.com/vets-drivers-div/fleming-m/fleming.html for example

Just a matter of doing some research.

Thank you for your help Hallmark, I have read all of the things you added previously during extensive research on the Internet but I cannot find anything that gives a full explanation as to why the lorry crashed. Someone else advised me that the type of lorry was known to be unstable so that was most likely the cause.
