Title: Photo of grave in Wilford Hill cemetery in Nottingham
Post by: kieran257 on Saturday 22 May 10 20:48 BST (UK)
Hi all,

I am hoping someone will take some photos of my great grandfathers grave Robert John Marshall in Wilford Hill cemetery in Nottingham so that I can complete my family tree.

I have finally been able to get the grave number and reference.

I would really appreciate any help as I am in London and don't know the Nottingham area.

Thanks for all your help

Kieran

Hi LH35,

Thank you very much for all your help in getting photos my great grandfathers grave.  I have been trying to get his death notice in the paper but haven't been able to find it.  It was suggested that if I contacted the funeral directors that they would know.  Do you know anyone that works at the cemetery office or could you possibly ask them the next time you are there who the funeral director was and then I could phone them to see if they know anything bout a notice.

Thanks for all your kind help

Kieran

Hi Kieran,

Have you tried contacting Angel Row Library in Nottingham.  They have all the old newspapers on film.

If you know a pretty accurate date for the death notice, you might find the Library staff may look it up for you, I have always found them very helpful.

enquiryline@nottinghamcity.gov.uk

Good luck,

Hi copperbeach5,

Yes I did already try this but thanks for your help.

Yes the details were Robert John Marshall and who died on the 1 February 1961.  He lived in Portland Road, Nottingham.  Robert John originally came from Gortilea, Claudy, Co Derry Northern Ireland.
I would love to find a photo of him as I never knew him but think this is impossible.

Thanks for all your help

Kieran

Hi Kieran,

Next time I visit the Angel Row library in Nottingham I will have a look for you? Or are you saying that the staff looked and could find nothing?

I have to say - I feel cheated [reading this thread] - that you have not posted the photos on here [or am I just sad and morbid? - actually I feel a bit morbid today, might visit the graves forum next! lol]

LH35 helped me to find the grave of one of my ancestors - from the map she has - lovely lady!!!

Please let me know if you would like me to look for notice in the papers.

Hi Elaine,

Thanks for your reply.  I would be more than grateful if you could have a look for me when you are next at Angel Row library.  I would love to find a photo of him as I never knew him but think this will not happen unless someone lived next door to him would have any.

Yes LH35 is a wonderful lady who has helped me alot.

Thanks for all your help

Hi Kieran,

What about contacting the Nottingham Evening post, and offer to write a little article.... they might be up for that, and it may reach someone who could tell you more, or maybe even produce your much needed picture?

I always think for the sake of an email, or stamp it's worth a try!

Best wishes,
Copperbeech5

I have to agree , writing a letter   to  the letter page  is something that might  bring forth  more info ..
I have seen that done before, when friends have lost contact .

Give it a go Kieran you have nothing to lose . :)

Hi Kieran,

I looked at the library at the Nottingham Evening Post [which for that date was the most popular and well used newspaper in Nottingham] I could find no notice of death for Robert Marshall.

For your information - I searched from the 1/2/1961 - 9/2/11.

I also looked at the news items in the papers for these dates, just incase he died in an unusual way i.e. murder, road crash, accident etc - but nothing at all.

Sorry not to be able to give you good news! [that was an accidental pun by the way!!  ::) ]

Hi Lainie3961,

Thanks again for all your help it is a pity that nothing turned up.  He is just proving hard to find like my grandfathers two sisters that went to America and no one can find and trace of them.

Some people are just so hard to find.

Thanks for all your help

I hope to be visiting the Archives in the next couple of weeks. Would you like me to look on Ancestry for you while I am there? [free access]

Dont know whether anything will turn up - but Ancestry covers American records.

Have you had a free trial on Ancestry? I have so it wont let me do it again [long memory!]

If you post his birth date + those of his sisters on here - and where they were born - and their parents - I could have a look on FindMyPast for you?

Hi lainie3961,

Thanks for your help.  My grandfathers two sisters of my dads side were called:
Parents were Patrick McKernan and Anne O'Neill born in Drumderg, Draperstown, Magherafelt, Co Derry and went to America.
Mary McKernan - 07 May 1877
Annie McKernan - 14 June 1883

My great grandfather of my mums side

Robert John Marshall born in Feb 1884 and died Feb 1961 born to William Marshall and Martha Thom of Gortliea, Upper Cumber, Claudy, Co Derry.  He had one sister who I can't find except in the census called Maudie/ Maud Marshall.

Does find my past cover irish records for Londonderry/Derry etc

Thanks for all your help and if you can search while you are have Ancestry

Hi Kieran,

You say that Robert Marshall was born in Ireland? Do you know when he came over to Nottingham with his parents and sister?

Did Mary and Annie McKernan emigrate from Ireland to America?

No - FindMyPast doesnt cover Irish records - and I dont have access to Ancestry at home - I will have to wait until I visit the Archives to have a look, because I can access Ancestry free from there. Have you tried a free trial of Ancestry?

Hi Lainie3961,

Thanks for all your help.  Don't think Robert John went across with anyone and he probably went across in the 30's or 40's as his sister in buried in Ireland.  He was already married and left the wife and children back home.

Yes Mary and Annie emigrated to America after 1901 as they are in the Northern Ireland census.  It is thought that Mary became a nun.  I found her in the 1900 census for Brooklyn but then she was back home again in 1901.

After that it is a cold trace and can't seem to get anywhere with them.  Annie is believe to have married O'halloran but I can't get anywhere with that.?

Thanks for all your help hopefully one day I will get to the bottom of these three.

Regards

Kieran

I have found this record which would fit with what you have told me?

Annie MCKERNAN Date of departure: 4 June 1910 Port of departure: Londonderry Passenger destination port: New York, USA Passenger destination: New York, USA Date of Birth: 1882 (calculated from age) Age: 28 Marital status: Single Sex: Female Occupation: Servant

I have searched for a passenger by the name of Robert John from Derry to England but am not having much luck!

Hi Lainie3961,

Thanks for this could be her.  Do you know the name of the ship or can you get a copy of her passport application?

Maybe he was just called Robert Marshall?

Thanks for all your help I will get there eventually.

Kieran

PS Can you find an Andrew McKernan and a Bridget McKernan with there daughter Margaret they would of left after 1848 or so.

Ship: FURNESSIA
Official Number: 76900
Master's name: John Black
Steamship Line: Anchor
Where bound: New York, USA
Square feet: 11150
Registered tonnage: 3606
Passengers on voyage: 90

The records coverage is 1890-1960 so if they left about 1848 then the records are not there for me to look at. I can only access passenger records leaving UK ports.

I have just had a quick look through passport application for 1903 [that is the latest records I can access. Nothing - but then I wouldnt think that she would apply before early 1910.

I assume that these records include application made in Northern Ireland - the records do not say either way.
