Title: Walton-on-Thames
Post by: Member on Monday 31 May 10 13:44 BST (UK)
I was born in March 1940 and my parents were living in a flat above a shop at 27a Bridge Street, Walton-on-Thames.  My father and mother are now dead but I know we moved shortly after I was born. None of my family discussed their wartime experiences after the war but I recall hearing mentioned when I was a boy that we had been bombed out of our flat.

I am interested in finding out whether the story was true and found a mention on the web site that the bridge had been damaged during an air raid in 1940 but there is no mention of nearby houses or shops having been affected.

If anyone knows how I can find out more about this, I would be very grateful.

The book "Raiders Overhead - The Bombing of Walton and Weybridge" by Stephen Flower may be of interest:

Hi, i might be able to help you re-trace your early steps at the shop at 27a bridge street.
Yes the shop was bombed by a V1 in June 1944, but i know you were not living in the shop then as my grandfather and grandmother lived and owned the shop from 1941.
If you want more info i can ask my mother who also lived in the shop with the rest of the family when it was bombed (all survived)

I am researching my family history. My late mum's house was bombed in mid June 1944 and 3 family members were killed. The records around that time show that the bombing on the night of 17th/18th June 1944 in Bridge Street Walton on Thames caused 3 deaths which seems to fit. I wonder if this is the same event you refer too.

Hi Rozk

Welcome to Rootschat  ;D

According to their profiles, Member hasn't been online here since 2010 and wardyward since 2011.

As long as their email addresses haven't changed they should receive notifications that we have posted and maybe come back soon.

Hi Dawn,
Thanks for the info and hopefully they will respond. Have ordered the book mentioned above and will contact Surrey history society. It's going to be 70 years this year since the bombing and sadly my mum passed away last year but we are going to commemorate the anniversary.

Ancestry have the WW2 civilian death records now. If anyone died in the bombings they have the name, address and dates any bombs fell.

Thanks for the info about Ancestry will check this out. The tragedy of the bombing effected my family for decades and meant I never got to meet my grandfather or uncle who died.

Have checked the Commonwealth War Record site and it was my relatives that died that night. I felt quite choked up to see their names there. At least now we can commemorate their 70th anniversary on the day and we could even visit Walton on Thames where it happened.
