Are there many gravestones left at St Leo's in Basford? I know of the Basford general cemetery but the graves in which I'm interested predate its opening. I don't want a drive down the motorway to St Leo's if there's no likelihood of hitting gold!

See

and there's a whole lot of other information there about St Leodegarius.

Thankyou, very interesting!

Hi Annie,
I have pictures of St. Leodegarius grounds in Basford that I took a few years ago which include general photos of the graveyard. If you'd like pictures, let me know. I'll send them to you. I tried looking for graves from the early pre 1638. No gravestones that early (what few there were) are readable. Janporter.edu@comcast.net . Put St. Leo's in the subject line, so I don't delete your message.

Hi jan; thanks for that but it's not possible to exchange PMs until someone has a minimum of 3 posts.
Seperately, I managed to get to St Leo's a week or two back and bought a book about the church; it contains transcripts of all the tombstones that were legible so if anyone wants me to check out any specific names, let me know.
-
Thanks, Annie!
I'm looking for anyone whose surname is any variant spelling of Whelden.
Also a woman named Jane who might have been buried in 1637 or 1638.
Thanks for your help! I live in the U.S., but I went to Nottingham to do research on my grandfather 12 generations ago named Gabriel Whelden. I had an article on him and his children (all baptised at St. Leo's) for the New England Historical and Genealogical Register that came out in October of 2009, so it was a very productive trip.
If you are looking for pre 1665 baptisms, etc., go to the Central Library in Nottingham. The first microfiche of St. Leo's has never been published. The probable reason for that is that most of those church records were not in very readable condition; however, we did our best and got quite a bit of information.

Hi Annie
Are there any Mosedales?
Lynne
-
Sorry folks - no Wheldons, no Mosedales.
This doesn't mean that they weren't buried there, just that there's no surviving legible tombstone.
-
Hi Annie,
Were there any gravestones from the 1600s or before that were legible?
I take it that you also did not find a person with the first name of Jane having been born in 1637 or 1638.
Thanks for your help.

The oldest surviving stone was laid in 1669, for one John Clarke. There don't seem to be any others from the 17th century and none that match the description of a Jane.
Looking at the Notts FH CD, there was a marraige in Basford in 1678 between Jane Cutlar and John Cothory - any use?
-
Thanks, Annie. Good to know. I never reviewed all of the gravestones at St. Leo's. The ones that I did look at were dated much later than I needed; I figured anything earlier was worn down if there were even a gravestone. Besides, I knew that Gabriel Whelden was buried outside of Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A in 1654. I went to that gravesite but knew ahead of time that there was no gravestone for him....and no evidence of where exactly he was buried.
Between the time that Gabriel sold his property in Old Basford until his name is mentioned soon after, his wife, Jane was not heard from again.

Thanks for looking!

Bonjour Lynn
This is my very first venture into the world of forums
Living in France it is not easy to research in the UK. Would you be so kind and look in your book of the gravestones in St Leodagarius Church. The name is Dorothy Mason 1908-1929 nee Harrison

Bonjour Charentais et bienvenue!
Burials in St Leo's graveyard stopped quite some time before the date you give. I'm afraid that I can't see any headstone with the name you give in the Basford general cemetery either.

Hi, thought this might be of interest to you,my husband as been researching our row cottages and our neighbour let us look at their deeds .In 1952 Charles Holyland of Nottingham,a darkroom technician ,paid £380 for her cottage .

The reference to St. Leodegar interested me, as I was only aware of the dedication to him at Wyberton, Boston, Lincs, which I was told was unique in Britain . You live and learn, 4 though double what I had anticipated is still a very low number of dedications, many thanks for the information.

Hi Annie, do you still have access to St Leodegarious buriels? Im looking for Ann Stainforth nee Burton, i last have her on the 1851 census so sometime after that. There is a death on freebmd for dec q 1861. Mamy thanks in advance

Hi
Is it the Ann Stainforth who was born c 1785 and living at Hucknall Torkard in 1851?
If so she is still around in the 1861 census aged 72
Carol

Hi Carol, yes, that is her. Thank you for finding that, who was she living with in 1861? The census would have been earlier in the year I assume

Thank you for that info Carol

I've looked on the Notts FHS burial CD, but Hucknall Torkard isn't covered on there yet for that period.

Hi Stainforth
1861 census was taken Sunday 7 April
by the way did you ever find anything about the person who, on another site, seemed to be copying and pasting look ups we had done for you on RootsChat and taking praise for finding the information?
I was quite worried by it
You didn't answer the last post on Simoncelli topic ??
Suz
-
I have Hucknall Torkard on my NFHS cd but no Ann Stainforth burial. There is one for an Annie but she was only 26 years old. 28-5-1886.
-
Thank you for checking for me Annie
-
Hi Stainforth -did you read my post giving the date of the 1861 census?
and a Simoncelli query?
Suz
-
Yes suz, I did. Thank you for the census info. I have just seen your message on my other post too. Why were you worried? It is me on the other site, relaying information to someone else who was helping me. I didnt realise it was against the rules to share information?? My apologies again if it is
-
Of course its not against the rules to share information - I didn't think it was you and I was just worried that someone was following me (and you) around - I have had this kind of thing happen before - not on this site - and my account was compromised.
I was even more worried when you didn't reply
No worries

Hi; perhaps I should clarify that my St Leo listing is NOT the pr, or a general list of burials etc; it is a booklet about the church which details the surviving headstones in the churchyard. Obviously there will have been very many burials who have no memorial stone.
No Stainforth or Burton stones, I'm afraid (except one from the 18th century - Elizabeth and Frances Burton, d 1781 and 1799 - I can give further details if that's relevant).
-
Hello
I know this post is old, but I wonder if anyone had transcript the names on the gravestones used in the plinth in the south side of the nave, outside ? Is there any Ingalls or Ingols ? around 1500 - 1600 ? Thanks !
-
The booklet I've got on the gravestones doesn't include these stones, and the earliest burial on the Notts FH CD is 1654. Sorry!
-
Thanks !
