Hi
My great grandmother was Jane Semple, born about 1853 in the Galway area (recorded as Connemara in the 1901 census but just Galway in the 1911 one). Her father was John Semple, a builder who was based in Dominic Street, Galway until his death at around 1880.
Jane Semple married my great grandfather, Edward Patrick Staunton, on 6 June 1876. They were married at Nile Lodge, Galway, which was the home of Joseph Semple. Joseph Semple (abt 1816-1905) was a JP and merchant.
The Galway Family History Society has been extremely helpful with information about my family but can find no record of John Semple’s marriage or death (although there is a possibly relevant baptism record in 1807) and can find no records which could tell me the relationship between Jane Semple or her father and Joseph Semple.
I would be grateful for any information that would help.
Many thanks
Malcolm

Hi,
Just came across your message while googling Nile Lodge and Semple. I can't see if your post is recent? I am to visit Nile Lodge this evening and am related (through marriage) to Semple and in particular the Joseph Semple you mention. A relative has a portrait of him in her home.

Did Jane's marriage certificate state her father's occupation as builder?

Hi
Thank you very much JGGalway, myluck! and dathai for your messages. I posted my message on 5th June 2010 and gave up looking for a reply a long time ago! Your information is extremely helpful and really interesting.
JG - I would be very interested in learning more about Joseph Semple and his family and I'd love to see a photo of the portrait. There is a photo of him with Michael Cloherty outside their sawmill in one of Maurice Semple's books - which I have - but I've seen no other pictures of him. I'll send you a message with my email address.
myluck! - Jane's marriage certificate does state that her father was a builder so I'm sure this is the same person as in your links. This information helps a lot because I couldn't find any information about his death. The information on Lower Dominick is very interesting because my great grandparents Edward Patrick Staunton and Jane Staunton (nee Semple) lived at 8 Lower Dominick Street, where Edward was an apothecary. He must have taken over the shop from Patrick Staunton and I assume they were related, but don't know the exact relationship. My relatives lived there until about 1910.
Datahi - thanks for the link concerning Elizabeth Semple. She is obviously a relative too and I'll have to investigate further to find out where she fits in.
Many thanks again for all your help.

Hi Kim
Many thanks for all this information. It gives me the maiden name of John Semple's wife, which I didn't know before. She was Mary Anne Kean, who must have been born around 1818 because we know that she died in 1888 at Shop Street, aged 70. John Semple was born in 1807 and died in 1881.
Your list of sponsors gives more indications that John Semple and Joseph Semple were closely related. The Joseph Semple who lived at Nile Lodge was born around 1816 and so perhaps was John's brother.
We know from the censuses that Jane Semple was born around 1851 but so far we don't have a formal record of this. We knew she had a sister, Margaret Semple, who was born around 1837 and married Michael Cloherty around 1853 when she was about 16. I didn't know about the other children on your list and I'll have to do some more research on these.
Thanks very much for all your help with this.

Hi, I looked for the births of Joseph ( 1816), Margaret (1837), and Jane (1851) Semple with no luck in Galway. The only births in the parish registers for people of those names were born in county Down. I also in the parish registers checked from 1834-1854 for the marriage of Margaret & Michael Cloherty without success. You may already have these births but I will send them along just in case.
Births of children to Michael & Margaret Cloherty:
Patt John
address: Galway
bap 19 Feb 1854
St Nicholas Combined
Roman Catholic
father: Michael Clogherty
mother: Margaret Semple
sponsors: Peter Flynn & Miss Winter
William
bap 15 April 1855
sponsors: John Semple & Mary Cloherty
Henry
bap 18 Aug 1856
sponsors: Francis McNamara & Agnes Semple
Michael
bap 22 Jan 1858
sponsors: Joseph Semple & Mary A. Semple
Mary Agnes
bap 26 Aug 1859
sponsors: Richard Semple & Mary Semple
Charles
bap 4 Aug 1861
sponsors: Thomas Croker & Jane Semple
** with all these baptisms all the information given on Patt John's is exactly the same on the rest except for baptism date & sponsors names. Sorry I couldn't be of more help, Kim
-
Hi Kim
I had some of this but not all of it and having the list of the sponsors is very helpful.
Just in case this is of help to others with links to these families, the Mary Agnes Cloherty who was born in 1859 married William V Semple, a son of Joseph Semple, around 1878 (again, no formal record found so far). They had at least three children - Joseph (1879), Frank (1880) and Archibald (1885). William Semple died in 1886, aged 34. Agnes (as she was known) did not remarry. She died at Seamount Nursing Home in Galway in 1927, aged 67.
Frank Semple married Elizabeth Ffrench and one of their sons was Maurice Semple, the solicitor who wrote several books about Galway and the Corrib.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi, found this birth but could find no others nor the marriage of William and Mary Agnes.
Birth:
Archibald Semple
bap. 12 Jan 1885
address: Taylor's Hill
parish: Rahoon
county: Galway
father: William Semple
mother: Agnes Cloherty
sponsors: George Semple & Anne Semple
Sorry couldn't be more help, Kim
-
Thanks for this Kim. There seem to be lots of gaps in the records. However I've just found this one on a family history website:
Joseph Francis Mary Semple
Birth Date: 2 Aug 1879
Birth Place: Salt Hill, Galway, Ireland
Father's name: William Semple
Mother's name: Agnes Cloherty Semple
So this was probably Frank and there may have only been two sons. I believe Archibald married Genevieve Stirling in 1915, who I understand was from Dún Laoghaire, but I don't have any more information about him.
Thanks
Malcolm
-
As an aside
Joseph Semple was the sponsor for my ancestor, Mary Jane Phillips baptised 30 May 1860 at Rahoon. She was the daughter of Bernard Phillips and Mary Bowen.
From memory he was also a sponsor for another of their children:)

Thanks for this Annie. I haven't come across either of these families in my searches so far but I will keep my eyes open.
Just for interest, while looking for more information on Joseph Semple I came across this photo of the sawmill that he and Michael Cloherty owned:
https://m.flickr.com/#/photos/chethams_library/9038829995/
I'm not quite sure whether this will work as a hyperlink so apologies if not.

As to the builder/architect John Semple. It would make sense, in my opinion
, to investigate an possible connection between the Blakes for whom he did work in Galway and Blakes who were landholders around Shrule and the Galway/Mayo/Roscommon border areas around Dunmore/Glenamaddy. My feeling is that he may likely have worked on a building project for them in the Shrule.
It is also worth looking at any other possible family connections with the Connacht Rangers/East India Company and also possibly Captain Blake's Galway Militia.

Thinking back to a conversation I had with Maurice Semple maybe 30 years ago, I remember he had done a family tree and mentioned a link with the Blakes who were deported from Galway to Monserrat.
-
Many thanks for all this Kalilileth, it's very helpful. One of my cousins had told me that Archibald had married someone with the surname Stirling, but this gives me a lot more information. I didn't know about his military background but my cousin told me that he eventually became a bank manager in Virginia, Co Cavan.
I haven't come across a link between John Semple and the Blake family and I'll look into this as well.
Many thanks

Many thanks Kalilileth – you’ve been doing a lot of research here!
I’ve had to go back through my records to check who is who with this section of the family. It can get quite confusing when our ancestors used the same first names in one generation after another!
I didn’t know anything much about Dr Francis Parker’s background so all the information about his parents and brothers and sisters is very interesting and I will look into this more now. I knew he had come from Cork because I found him listed in the Medical Registers of 1867 and 1879, but not much else.
I knew his son, Francis J Parker, had been married twice. Josephine sadly died of TB at age 22 – I have a copy of her death certificate. I haven’t found any records of children from either of FJP’s marriages.
It is interesting that the two sons seemed to have fared differently financially. When John A Parker got married in 1906 he was a clerk in Galway, but by the time of the 1911 census he was “living on interest of money” in Cork. Meanwhile, his brother Francis was a chemist’s assistant in Dublin in 1911 and had the same occupation in 1928 at the time of his second marriage, so obviously not quite so fortunate.
Thanks for looking into all of this.

Back to the Semple Builders/Architects for a moment...
I was puzzled as to the reason why Jane married in Dublin. I wonder if this gives a clue? My gut says there is a link between Galway John & Dublin John...

He presumably received his training in building from his father; Bolger records measuring 'bricklayer's work done at Trinity College…by John Semple, junr' in October 1821.(1) In 1823 or 1824 he was taken into partnership by his father who had been appointed architect to the Board of First Fruits for the ecclesiastical province of Dublin. While 'John Semple & Son' are named in the directories from 1825 until 1832 as jointly occupying this position, it is the younger man who is generally regarded as having designed an idiosyncratic series of churches, which were built between 1825 and 1831. Shortly before the dissolution of the Board in 1833, the Semples were replaced by FREDERICK DARLEY[2]. (2)
Semple was admitted a freeman of the City of Dublin as a member of the Bricklayers' Guild by Grace Especial at Michaelmas 1830. During the following decade he played an increasingly active role in the affairs of Dublin Corporation. He was a junior high sheriff for 1831-32;(3) and sheriff's peer from 1838 until 1841.(4) In July 1832 he was appointed joint engineer of the pipe water works with ANDREW COFFEY , at Coffey's request,(5) and within the next twelve months he became sole occupant of the post.(6) He was briefly suspended in January 1834, 'unpleasant matters' having been alleged against him,(7) but was reinstated in May after he had successfully argued his innocence.(8) By 1836 he was also architect to the Dublin Prisons Board.(9) In Pettigrew & Oulton's Almanack for the years 1839 until 1843 he is described as 'architect to the City Prisons, Roads and Pipe Water Works'.
A survey of a proposed new road from Donnybrook Bridge to Rock Road 'through Mr Semple's ground and the nursery', dated 9 December 1841, is among the Pembroke Estate papers in the National Archives.(10)
It appears to have been after his father's death in 1840 that Semple's career took a downward turn. By 1844 he had been succeeded by CHARLES TARRANT as engineer to the Pipe Water Establishment. The directories indicate that at about the same time he moved into his barrister brother James's house in Donnybrook and that he gave up his Dublin office in 1848. In 1849 he went bankrupt(11) in connection with the development of Belgrave Square, Monkstown.(12) He is not listed in the directories between 1857 and 1861. In the latter year he was an entrant in the St Andrew's church competition, but his design was rejected as old- fashioned.(13) He reappears in the directories in 1862, when he was living at a house in Pleasant's Street with James. The two brothers subsequently moved to 78 Heytesbury Street, where James died in 1869. In 1776 John Semple went to live with his eldest son John George (d. 1900) at 6 Ontario Terrace, Rathmines, and died there from age and contusions after a fall on 15 October 1882. He had married Harriet Cuppaidge in 1832(14) and had at least eight children.

SEMPLE, JOHN [5]
Born: - Died: -
Architect, probably of Galway, active in the 1830s. On 12 March 1837 Timothy Murray of Galway wrote to Martin Blake, MP for Galway, recommending that his friend 'John Semple, the architect' should be chosen to design a store which Blake was building in the town. Semple had already supplied Blake with a drawing for the building.(1) Possibly the same John Semple who was a building contractor in Galway in the early 1860s.

Staggering - but thanks for all this Kalilileth!
I’m not really sure what to make of it though – I had no idea that there were several John Semple architects/builders around the same time in Dublin! This is a huge list of works. As you say, it would not be surprising to find a link with Galway John Semple.
My older relations in the family were able to give me quite a lot of information to start our family history but they knew very little about the Semples, which is why I started this thread in 2010. I know a lot more now thanks to everyone’s help on this site, but I’ve still not found a record of Jane Semple’s birth, nor her death (as Jane Parker), nor the relationship with Joseph Semple, which led to her being married in Joseph Semple’s house, Nile Lodge, in 1876.
I remain optimistic though - given how much more information is available now than when I started.
Many thanks for all the research you’ve done on this.

I've just found this record, which was only posted in Sept 2016:
https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=parker&GSfn=jane&GSbyrel=all&GSdy=1927&GSdyrel=in&GScntry=35&GSob=n&GRid=169594139&df=all&
This gives Jane's birth year as 1847 and the date of her death as July 1927, in Ballinrobe.
There doesn't seem to be a civil record though, so it's difficult to confirm, but this could be the grave of Edward Staunton's and Mary Newton's mother. She may have been living with Cecil and Mary Newton, who lived at a chemist's shop in Bridge Street, Ballinrobe. She had originally been living with my grandfather and family in Ballaghaderreen, but my grandfather died in 1925 and his family was split up at that stage.

Just in case this helps anyone else who was looking for the links between members of the Semple family in Galway, I've attached an extract from a lengthy obituary for Austin Semple, who died in July 1910, aged 91. It’s from the Galway Express on 16th July 1910 and it mentions that Austin was the survivor of four brothers - John Semple (builder), Joseph Semple of Nile Lodge, and Richard Semple (merchant).
I was looking for the link between my great grandmother, who’s maiden name was Jane Semple and who’s father was John Semple, a builder, and Joseph Semple. This was because in 1876 Jane Semple married my great grandfather, Edward Patrick Staunton, at Nile Lodge, which was owned by Joseph Semple. I couldn’t find any records to explain in what way they were related, but this answers that question.
Many thanks for all the helpful links that have been posted in this thread over the past few years!
