Title: EDLIN family of Leicester, England and NZ
Post by: stasiadevorms on Friday 11 June 10 02:04 BST (UK)
I'm a complete beginner to this? I found a heap of posts on the Edlin family but it wouldn't let me reply so I'm posting here. Can the people that have family trees for the Edlins of Leicester please contact me? I'm an NZ Edlin, descended from George. I have a family tree but its not very detailed and quite difficult to make sense of! It goes back to Emma Edlyng 1516 but as I say not very detailed. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hullo and welcomr to rootschat :)

the reason you were not allowed to reply by PM[personal message] is that you have to have made 3 posts onRC before using that facility.

The most effficent way to egt in touch with the Edlin posters would be for you to make another post[ why not reply to me and say thank you ;D] and then you'd have made 3.  Then go back and send PMs to those you wish to contact ;D

As I suggested in my email to you it would be a good idea to make a post on the following thread:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,129116.0.html

That thread is watched by a number of people with an interest in your family

Looks like its locked for some reason. ???

What I'd do in those circs, I'd go to the thread again, and try to PM the original psoter- the one who started that thread and PM her and ask about the Edlins.

She was online yesterday in RC so she's still active here.

Now you have 4 posts you can use the PM .
Give it a go and let us know what happens please. :)

I'm also a beginner, and have just joined Rootschat.  I have an extensive Edlin tree also going back to Emme Edlyng d.1515.  It would be interesting to compare notes.  I've no idea how to join the Edlin thread of the Forum.  ¿Can you help'?

As the original thread on the one name board has been locked for some time I have started a new one.

Can I suggest that we all identify our interests on there.

Hello.
I am new to this. I have a large Photocopy of the Edlin (Edlyng) Family tree. That is my Mothers line.
It goes back to the Matriarch Emma Edlyng of Leicester, England. My mum is well in her 80's now but slowly her siblings are departing.

Hello Kevster

I would love to see your copy of the Edlin family tree.  Where do you fit in?  I have a tree researched by Robert Wilfrid Edlin, which served me as a base to start my research.
My email is: (*)
I'm Maria C. Edlin, daughter of Ronald Stanley Edlin, son of Stanley Edlin, son of Robert William Edlin.
I have plenty of info on this branch of the family if you're interested.
Do you have info on Emma Edlyng and her children?

Maria

The nearest that I have got to the family of Emma is as follows:

John Edling married Emma (buried 1515).  John Edling is first mention on May 2 1492 on Subsidy Roll.  He was Town Chamberlain with Robert Knolles in 1494/95.  He lived in the South Gate area.  Children:

Emmet Edlin born c1485 married Thomas Bolton
Margaret Edlin born c 1490 married Edward Lyddyrland, a mercer who entered the Merchant Guild in 1487/8
William born 1490 buried 1538 Redmile

A whole dynasty of Edlins in Lincolnshire and Leicestershire seems to descend from the son William.  This includes the New Zealand family and Maria's line.

How exciting to get a new reply! Kevster I wonder if the photocopy you have is the same as mine? I'm on my phone at the moment but will have a look tomorrow at my tree to see if I can find you. I got my copy off my Nanna Joyce Edlin. Would love to correspond with anyone interested. Pm me for my email.

If any of you have not seen my two documents which define the Leicestershire and New Zealand branches from John Edlin to the current day PM me with an email address and I will send you copies.  Together they constitute a 33 A4 pages summary of their tree.

Hi "Behind the frogs"!

Happy New Year!

Yes, the info you have on Emma & John Edlying and children is what I have - same source!!!  but wondered if Kevester had more info on them.

I believe I have your 33 page doc on Leicester line, with an update you sent me dated June 2011 - is this the latest?

I'm trying to find a link between John Edlying and the Edlins I have found in Shropshire (Haughmond Abbey Cartulary/Worcestershire in the 12th and 13th century.  I believe the Salop family may be the sons of William fitz Aldelin.

Hi Kevster

Send me a PM if you are interested in more info, although "Behind the frogs" has a very good summary of both lines.  I think you need to post 3 messages on the board before you can send a PM.

Hi Stasiadevorms!

I've sent you a PM with my email address.  I'm interested to know how the 3 brothers fared in NZ after leaving the difficult conditions of early 19th century rural Leicstershire.

Hi Maria,

Can you send me details of the Shropshire Edlins please.  I will check my card index and other documents to see if I can find any connection.

William FitzEdlin (Adeline) who went on the crusades with Richard I and was with him when he was killed in Normandy, had two sons Richard and William by his first wife Eustacia de Courtenay.

Richard lived in Shropshire and so may be the ancestor of the Shropshire line.  The other son William had two sons also Richard and William.  It is rumoured that this second Richard was the freeman of Leicester in 1196 but I have found no evidence for this.

Hi David

Yes, I'll send you what I've found in Shropshire/Worcestershire.  Let's see if we can link the 12th and 13th century.  Did William Fitz Adeline have daughters, apart from Scholastica who lived in Dublin?

I've seen somewhere that William Fitz Adeline died in the Holy Land in 1202.  Is this correct.  If so, do we know where he's buried and how he died? He must have been a good old age by then!

Hi Maria

Thank you for the Shropshire information.  I have sent you another document which confirms your view of William.  According to my information after the death of Richard I William returned to England to sort out his debts and other problems. He returned to the Holy Land in 1199 and died there in 1202.

Hi. I'm a descendant of the North Leicestershire Edlins, as explained some years ago on the other (now closed) thread.

We've just discovered another Edlin who almost certainly fits in somewhere; a trades union activist named John Thomas Edlin born 1873, Leicestershire, but living at 86, Robin Hood's Chase, Nottingham in 1927. He was a Labour candidate for Nottingham city council. Earlier he had been organiser for the Ironstone Quarrymen and Blastfurnacemen in Melton Mowbray.

Information from "The Labour Who's Who" 1927 edition.
