Title: Turnbulls in Roxburghshire
Post by: Luckyme on Tuesday 15 June 10 22:25 BST (UK)
Hi. I'm looking to see if anyone has any information on, or indeed, any links to Turnbulls in Roxburghshire.

My grandfather was Frederick Turnbull Born 1905 in Chester-le-Street, County Durham.

His father, my Great-Grandfather was Walter George Turnbull who was born around 1881 in Hymount, Roxburghshire. I can't find any information on a place called Hymount. Do you think it was transcribed incorrectly from the 1911 census? I also can't find any records online for his birth. Any ideas on where to go other than ordering lots of certificates?

Thanks in anticipation.

There's a Walter G. Turnbull born c1881 in Roxburghshire in 1891 Scottish census- might be worth checking.
I.G.I. (www.familysearch.org) has a Walter George Turnbull born c1880 Castleton, Roxb., son of Francis/Frank & Janet Turnbull but it's a submitted entry.

Hello 'Luckyme'

By the sound of your post you're 'South of the Border'.  :O)

For research in Scotland you won't have to spend loads of dosh ordering certificates.  If you go to pay per view site at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

For £6.00 (six pounds), you will be able to download up to 5 certs/census records (copies - not transcripts).  It's free to register and do searches - but to view you have to pay.

As a start, I've downloaded 'your' WG Turnbulls birth entry.  If you send me a pm I can send it to you.

I did a search from 1875 to 1885 and it only came up with 1 person of that name in all of Scotland .  He is George William Turnbull, born on March 22nd to William Turnbull a 'Farm Steward' and his wife Joanna Turnbull (Miss Gourlay) -married in Yetholm  in 1866.

The mystery then starts.

A search of 1866 on Scotlands People brings up no marriages using those names

However, do the search for 1866 for a William Turnbull marriage only, brings up 6 hits in Scotland.
UPDATE as of 22.36 There are 2 marriages in Yetholm - of a Joanna Gourley Redpath and a Joanna Gourlay Armstrong -
The joys of FH research.  :O)

I hope that's been of some help. What you need to do now is go and download both marriages and find which William Turnbulls age approximates. , and get back another generation, as Scottish certs give the parents names and the mothers maiden name.

Have attached a clip of the place of birth for 'locals' to interpret, the second name is the parish.
Regards,   Steve

If you go to the following site you'll find the parish as Makerstoun

http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/place/place_page.jsp?p_id=16613&st=Makerston

And if you go here, it will give you photos of the general area.

http://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=13323493

And lastly  if yyou go to the National Library for Scotland maps at

http://geo.nls.uk/os6inch/

Type in Roxburgh in the 'county ' box and Makerstoun in the 'parish' box, you'll find Haymount in the centre of the map.

I've copied the map into a word doc and can forward it with the birth entry.

A slight problem,

I've been back on to Scotlands people and there are 2 marriages in Yetholm for a William Turnbull in 1866 -one to a Joanna Gourlay Redpath and the other to a Joanna Gourlay Armstrong.  Very strange.  Which one did 'your' William marry.  I'll PM you the search I did.

lucky ,in eckford cemetery there is a william turnbull/joanna gourlay but it says he died eccles bankhead 1917 aged 75 making him born 1842 so maybe the census ages of 52 in 1881 is wrong when joann is shown as 41. www.bordersfhs.org.uk have the Mi  BOOK FOR £5.00

Hello M. Carter. I see that your name interests include Telfer and Andison in Roxburghshire. I have literally just been looking at the marriage of John Helm and Jane Clark Telfer, John being the son of William Helm and Elspeth Grahamslaw, and the grandson of John Helm and Janet Andison. Any connection? My interest is in Grahamslaw.

I have been to the Churchyard at Eckford.    The gravestone is gradually being covered by lichen but is still legible and does read 'also Walter George and William who died in infancy' despite Walter George living long enough to be sadly killed in WW1.

Possibly there was an earlier child called Walter George who died in infancy and parents re-used the name for another son.

yes - this is very common especially if its a family name, but sometimes the middle name is changed to highlight the difference

I have several instances in my family when a child dies in infancy
