Hi there,
Does anyone know where I can access burial records relating to cemeteries in Stoneykirk/Kirkmaiden. Or even records of headstone inscriptions for the area?
I am looking to trace the location of a burial in 1930.
Any thoughts?
Regards,
Anna

We were there yesterday researching a Grandparents grave.
Stoneykirk is a very small and beautiful location set on a hill overlooking the sea the surrounding fields and farms.
There is a little church there with details of all the graves but because its so small you could just spend an hour walking around (like we did) and viewing each headstone.
Theres an old section and a newer / new section.
-
Hi anabanana,
I have the MI books for both Stoneykirk and Kirkmaiden, post the details and I will have a look for you.
I agree with you Jill, it is a lovely place and quite an unspoilt part of the country.
Kind regards

Many thanks

Hi CJ
The only mention of the name Templeton is in Kirkmaiden and refers to Jean Templeton, spouse of John Paterson who died 11th march 1824 aged 84 years. Also Catherine Paterson 4th daughter of John Paterson and Jean Templeton who at Stranraer in 1848.
This is a really long inscription, so if it's one of yours let me know and I will give you the full inscription.

Hi Cjeff,
Here is a burial record for two TEMPLETON deaths in Stoneykirk Parish which are recorded elsewhere in Wigtownshire. [The personal message I sent you gives more details on TEMPLETON burials.]
This is a good of example of a Scottish gravestone which is actually a Family Memorial listing members who have died locally and abroad. There is an understandable tendency to think a gravestone is a burial record of those interred in that lair (grave plot), this example clearly demonstrates that is NOT always the case.
Location Glenluce Graveyard WIG: DGFHS Survey, (2006)
[ Square column with draped urn ]
Charles TEMPLETON, tenant in High Torrs, who died the 15th of November 1816 aged 72 years
Also his son, James TEMPLETON, who died the 17th of October 1815 aged 20 years
Also his son, William TEMPLETON, who died the 4th April 1818 aged 16 years
Also his spouse, Mary McHARG, who died the 18th of September 1819 aged 57 years
Also his son, Charles TEMPLETON, who died the 30th of March 1837 aged 38 years
Also his son, John TEMPLETON, late tenant in High Torrs, who died the 28th of March 1846 aged 53 years
And his son, James TEMPLETON, who died in Trinidad the 27th of January 1844 aged 21 years
And his son, Alexander TEMPLETON, who died the 8th of November 1836 aged 2 years

Hi all.
I too have a request for info from Stoneykirk.
My great-great grandmother Margaret 'Maggie' FRASER (nee Wilson) - died 18th May 1954 in Camrie - Glenluce.
I have the MI booklet for Glenluce Church Street Cemetery and three of her children are buried in the same plot (421) but it mentions that Maggie was interred at Stoneykirk.
I looked at the MI book for Stoneykirk & Kirkmadrine but she isn't in there, so I assume she was buried at the 'new' churchyard to the north-west of the village, however no inscription booklet has been produced for this cemetery,
Can anyone point me in the direction of someone who could help me in the search for my ancestor's grave?

Just as an aside, but Robert Templeton from Glenluce moved to St. John's, Newfoundland, in 1863. Almost certainly the same family as Templetons from Stoneykirk. While living in St. John's in the 1990s I met their descendants (who run a paint shop).

Hello Beanie,
I am trying to figure out where my Stoneykirk McDowall's were buried. My hope is that they have a family plot in Stoneykirk. A few of them moved to Inch, confirmed in the 1841 and 1851 censuses, but I've been told through the MI's in Inch, they are not listed.
I'm looking for Hugh McDowall (1822-1885), his wife Jesse McDowall (nee: Weir, 1830-1869), his sister Margaret McDowall (1819-?), and most importantly his parents John McDowall (1768-?) and Elizabeth McDowall (nee: McCaig, death before 1841). I don't know anything about Elizabeth's parents names and hoping the MI's could possibly shed some light. John McDowall's parents were Alexander McDowal and Janet Kilpatrick. I know they married in 1757 in Stoneykirk, so I assume they were born around the 1730's. I'm also assuming they would be buried in Stoneykirk as well.
Thank you so much in advance,
Kerry McCarthy

Hi all,
I am also interested in Stoneykirk burials as my Cameron ancestors were there in the 1800's, starting with John Cameron who was from Ireland originally and is in the 1841 census in Stoneykirk. He married a local lass, Elizabeth McCulloch. Not sure of their marriage date but they were married by 1851, with 1 son, Alexander. In 1861 his mother, Martha Findlay, is living with them, still in Stoneykirk.
I am interested in finding where they're buried, and what, if any, information might be on their headstones, if they have them.
Any help appreciated,
Chris in Aus

Hi guys.
I was wondering if there were any monumental inscriptions for the surname Wither in Stoneykirk Old Parish Churchyard. I know that one of my direct ancestor's children is buried there, as per his death record, which I uploaded to his FindAGrave memorial here:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/189525184/john-ritchie-wither
I am wondering if there was a family lair, or lairs, for the Wither family there or even in Inch Old Parish Churchyard, where I found relatives of Helen Wither, née Richie:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/172236606/john-ritchie
Any help finding Wither realtives in Wigtownshire would be fantastic.
Kindest regards,
David Gilmour,
3x great-grandson of Alexander Wither & Helen Ritchie

Hi ,
There are still Withers in the Stranraer and surrounding area . I have one in my own tree but cannot connect with yours. They left the area and headed for Ayrshire where they went into coalmining some of their family went Pennsylvania .
I can't help do a look up for you for MI's but can I suggest that even although they are mentioned on a headstone they might not be buried in that particular grave .I have some ancestors mentioned on one in Portpatrick --they actually died in Edinburgh have no marker on their grave there I presume they could not take them back to Portpatrick a long journey in the 1920's and probably didn't have the money.
I'm not at home at the moment but I will send you the address who might be able to help in Stranraer and where to contact in Edinburgh for others.
I did a quick look up on SP and found George Ritchie Darrie married Jane Ann(Jean )Cameron in 1905 in Edinburgh had one son Thomas C Darrie born in 1905 who died in New York in 1968.
Alexander Wither Darrie married Margaret Briggs in 1907 also in Edinburgh they had a daughter Margaret Wither Darrie born 1914 in Glasgow . If you go on to SP you will find that Alexander was in Partick Glasgow on the 1940 valuation roll.
I did notice that one of your ancestors lived at Corner Cottage Inch --my grandparents lived there from 1941 until 1965 it was actually two cottages belonging to the Stair Estate where my grandfather was a forester.
I am on holiday at the moment but will get the information to you .

Hi, I am researching the Withers of the Stoneykirk area. My great grandmother was the illegitimate daughter of a Samuel Wither. I have the MI booklet for Stoneykirk and there are lots of Wither graves there. I have pictures of most of them and happy to share anything relevant.
I will look at my notes tomorrow and try and match up your info with the Wither graves if possible and see any links to my tree.

I am new to rootschat so I’m unsure of how this works but I am interested is a puzzle with my 3rd gt grandmother Elizabeth Wither b.1811 in Leswalt. She married my 3rd gt grandfather James McHarg in 1828 in Portpatrick and they had 3 children, Alexander, whom I’m descended from, b.1829, Mary b.1832 and John b.1834 after which she fades from the scene to be replaced by a Minnie Adair (wife) in the 1941 census and Minnie and James have 2 children, Margaret b.1840 and James b. 1841. In the 1851 census Minnie is down as Minnie McHarg (spouse) and as the mother to all 5 children.
On the surface it looks like a routine first wife dies and a second takes over although I cannot find a marriage between Minnie and James.
Then I discovered Elizabeth alive using her maiden name living with her father in the 1841, 51 and 61 censuses. In the 1871 and 1881 censuses she is head of the household her father presumably dying.
If anyone can shed any light on this family I would be most appreciative.

I have Robert Thompson and wife Agnes Neilson who had 6 or so children baptized at Kirkmaiden from 1817 to 1842, some of them may be buried there. I've not located any death records.

To everyone who kindly tried to help in my search for Elizabeth Wither I would like to give an update.
She married James McHarg in 1828, had 3 children with him then vanished from the records. Her place was taken by a Minnie Adair who had 2 children with James and presumably they married as they were husband and wife according to their death certificates. I still don’t have a birth or death record for Elizabeth nor a marriage record for Minnie and James.
What I have discovered is a Portpatrick census done in 1832 by the Reverent Andrew Urquhart then assistant minister to the Rev. John McKenzie. In it on page 57 he lists James McHargue [sic], Elizabeth Wither, their first two children and Elizabeth’s mother Janet McBride. If the age given for Elizabeth is correct it confirms that there are two Elizabeth Withers in Wigtonshire at this time. On Scotlandspeople I could find only one so mistakenly assumed she was the person James married.
So it looks like the simplest explanation is the correct one. Elizabeth probably died, Minnie moved in to care for the three children, eventually married James and had two children with him.
I will continue to search for definitive proof but in the meantime thanks everyone for your generous help.

Esspee, is it possible to obtain a copy of the Portpatrick census done in 1832 by the Reverent Andrew Urquhart.

Mick,
I have PM’d you with my email address as I can send you the photos I have.
For the record, I knew there was a copy in Utah but couldn’t work out how to get sight of it. I was told that perhaps Dumfries and Galloway libraries held a copy but after being told by the Mitchell Library in Glasgow that they couldn’t locate a copy anywhere a delightful real librarian in the Mitchell disappeared for 15 minutes and came back with a previously unread copy.
So for anyone searching there is one in Glasgow.

Final or penultimate post regarding the elusive Elizabeth Wither.
Having discovered her on the Urquhart census together with her husband and first two children I now had her age and mother’s maiden name. A session on Scotlandspeople gave me her mother’s marriage to Alexander Wither and the baptism dates of their children. The child born in the year Elizabeth was born was entered without a name which explains how the confusion arose.
I am convinced I now have the correct line so the story is almost over. All I need now is her death record then I will be completely satisfied.
If anyone has any ideas how I might find this I would be extremely grateful.
