Post by: clematis11 on Friday 25 June 10 04:21 BST (UK)
Can anyone help me with any family information re William Sinclair of Stroma Island, Caithness, Scotland. I know he was there in the year 1812-1813.  One of his sons, Alexander Sinclair, was a mariner and he married Margaret?. His indenture papers show him to be son of William Sinclair, Stroma island.  I am very keen to find the right William Sinclair for my genealogy work.  Please can you help at all.

Thanks for your information..  This William Sinclair may be the brother of my Alexander Sinclair as Alexander was born 1790 to 1798.  He was indentured in 1913 for 3 years, subsequently becoming a Mariner.  Alexander Sinclair married Margaret   ???? at possibly North Shields, England as she was from here and had 2 children born there sometime after this.
Can you help any more, knowing this.

I would love to know how many William Sinclair's were on the island about 1812-1813. If there was just one, it would make my life a whole lot easier.  The indenture papers of his son (Alexander Sinclair), state that 'Alexander Sinclair, son of William Sinclair, of Stroma Island) - great source of information but I really need to find the right William Siinclair.  Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Clematis

The Highland council provide a newspaper clipping service through e-mail from the John O'Groat Journal based in Wick.

The web site is http://www.ambaile.org.uk/en/newspapers/index.jsp . A quick search for 1840 to 1842 gave two results for Sinclair Stroma.

Deaths at the Pentland Skerries of Andrew Williams and John Sinclair and Peter Green: Stroma. Killed in shipwreck. Reported  November 26, 1841

Marriage  of William Sinclair Jnr. to Miss Steven (daughter of John Steven: farmer) both Cairn of Stroma.
Reported February 26, 1841

It might be worth your while requesting the full newspaper extract.

Thanks, yes not sure who this one is. However I believe that William and family may have left stroma for tynemouth, England, possibly due to 'Battle of Trafalgar'. Grasping at straws here. A census record shows the family at Tynemouth 1841. My Alexander Sinclair is not there - possibly away at sea but there is wife Margaret (nee Kennedy), and 4 children who are correct.  I still would like to know who is the wife of William Sinclair, of Stroma, for my research.  I think Alexander was born between 1790 and 1799 as indentured 1813 with Esq. James Lyons from Tynemouth.

William Sinclair (born 1853) married Marion Smith and Elspet Kennedy. He had a son Alexander born 1792. Who did he marry please?

I think this Alexander Sinclair married someone  in Scotland, can anyone confirm this please.

If so, I can eliminate this family as it would not be the right one.

The Alexander Sinclair that AKC gave you born 1792 is the only one I can find bap Canisbay 9 nov 1792 and born 6 Nov 1792 on Stroma. Poor thing 3 days old and taken over the sea in a small boat to be baptized. Mother Elspet Kennedy.

Have you got Alexander and wife on the 1851 census? for her place of birth.

Ok thanks, I did not get anywhere for Alexander and Margaret Sinclair and family in 1851 census for Northumberland, England. No record found, a bit strange I know. I would love to think that Alexander Sinclair born 1792 but on ancestry.com, there is a record of thim marrying some different. Its submitted information.

I have just joined Rootschat and was surprised to see Clematis 11 asking about William and Alexander Sinclair.I think they could be my Alexander and William Sinclair.I have not been able to find Alexander's wife's maiden name  -Her first name was Margaret and they married in North Shields.William their son married Mary Scott Robertson and they are my grt grt grandparents. On some of my paper work William has his name down as William Cooper/Couper Sinclair.Could this be his mother's maiden name?I would be interested in making contact to exchange or confirm a few names and dates.

Hi, am not sure if it’s the same William Sinclair but my relation was a William sinclair, he was an uncle of my late grandfather George sinclair. I don’t have much information but all I know was that he was a stevedore an one point. Am sure my grandfather told me he is buried on the island.
