Title: John Fowkes/Foulkes, Nottingham
Post by: Annie65115 on Friday 25 June 10 13:33 BST (UK)
Can anyone find John Fowkes in 1841 or 1851 for me?

In 1861 he was living at 35, Brougham St, St Mary's, Nottingham; age 21, born Sneinton, unmarried, whipmaker. Described as grandson to the head of house, Charlotte Rodgers or Rogers. (I'll come back to her).
In 1871 and 1881 his surname was spelt Foulkes, and place of birth given as Nottingham, year of brith ranges betwenn 1840 - 1842.

Charlotte Rogers had a lot of grandchildren, inlaws and assorted lodgers living with her in 1851 and 1861. I know she had the following daughters: Mary (m Leatherland); Sarah (m Shaw); Elizabeth (m Mitchell). She also had at least 2 sons, Thomas Stafford Rogers and Joseph. All these families seem to have stayed in the central Notttingham and Sneinton areas.

But I can't find how John Fowkes is Charlotte's grandson, and I can't find him at all in 1841 or 1851. The multiple possible (mis)spellings of his name don't help! Can anyone spot him? Ta!

Hi Annie
On freeBMD there is a birth registration in June 1841 at Nottingham for a John Fowkes Rogers. Vol 15 page 597, which looks as though it could be him!!

Oooh you clever lot!

The street is the same in 1841 and 1851 so I'd say that was the same father and son in both censuses; and if John snr and Mary weren't married when John jnr was born, that would explain him reverting back to his Foulkes name.

Thankyou  :)  That gives me some more to chew over!

Got Mary's death now that I know where to look, as well -- buried 2 April 1851, Sy Mary, address Pomfret St, age 37.

---oh -- and Elizabeth Foulkes Rogers of Pomfret St died in Jan 1841 age 3.

Thanks again for the pointer!

Is that the name then of the street on the 1841/51 census as well Annie? I tried to make sence of it and failed.

So Mary may not have been the birth mother then.

Except that there was another child, Elizabeth Fowkes Rogers, who was born around 1838 and died at that address just before the 1841 census.

Why do you think Mary might not have been the mother?

why doid I think she may not be the birth mother, is because it was getting late and I got confused.   :-\

I see now that she was the birth mother, so he was born John Rogers as parents not married, but Fowkes put in as a middle name?
John later took Fowkes as his Surname.
