Hi There Anyone,
I believe there is a Hardware shop in the main street of cookstown owned by the Browns or was owned by the Browns in 2003, but on the front of the shop says the name Mcveys. As my husband is a Mcvey his GT Gt and Gt Grandads were born Ireland , One born Co Tyrone about 1836 both had the names the same, James Mcvey, One of them may have owned a shop, or worked in a shop. His Gt Grandfather born about 1836 came over on the ship the Telegraph to live in Sydney Australia. We think his wife died before he sailed.
I would appreciate if someone could help me with any information on the shop, as we think the old shop owners could have been relations of my husband Richard MCvey born Sydney 1946.
I have a question, Do you know if the surname Leah is from Ireland or not??

It's off the main street, I believe (see map in link below). Perhaps get in touch with the store directly to see if they have any details of McVeys or suggest who might know more information.

Leah is a Biblical name but has been used in Ireland. There are 683 entries in civil registration index- 50 of them under Tyrone.

Hi,
In the 1901 and 1911 census the McVey shop in Molesworth street was a grocer's establishment. See www.census.nationalarchives.ie

Hi Kingkerswell,
Thanks for your reply, I got it wrong it was a Hardware store, not general store. so have replied to the other email of Aghowadey, he may have the best solution to write to the hardware store, so will try anyway.

In the 1950s there was indeed a McVeys Hardware and Farm Machinery shop or store in Molesworth Street Cookstown -managed or owned by Browns (I think they were brothers). I remember my father purchasing some item there- possibly a potato digger- but that was many years ago. The shop no longer exists.

in the 1907,1910 and 1913 Ulster Street Directories published by Lennon Wylie McVey Bros is listed as Grocers and Ironmongers in Cookstown
-
Also as a signature to the Ulster Covenant in 1912 there is a David G McVey with address in Molesworth Street, Cookstown listed.
For further investigation you could try the local church records-Derryloran Parish, !st and 3rd Cookstown Presbyterian Churches.

Hi Barbara:
Perhaps this may shed some light on your McVey question -
McVey Brothers Hardware store was located in Molesworth Street Cookstown. I grew up in Cookstown in the 1940's and knew the store well. It was owned by Cyrus and Noel Brown, who both worked in the store. Cyrus' wife, Irene, kept the books for them. I believe that Irene may originally have been a McVey, who I believe also owned a store in Ardtrea just outside of Cookstown. In any event, after Noel died Cyrus continued to run the business until his death and then Cyrus and Irene's only child, Ivan, assumed control of the business. Since I left Cookstown in 1956, I do not know if the business continues to operate today.
You might want to try contacting Ivan; I'm not certain but the following may be his address and telephone number: **

Hi Barbara - attached is a little additional information that shows McVeys were 'running' the store in 1911 per the 1911 Census:

McVey's store still exists in Molesworth Street Cookstown. And you are correct, it was, and still is, owned by 'Brown's', current owner is Ian Brown son of the Brown that you mentioned (Cyrus and his wife Irene). Cyrus' brother Noel also worked in the store. I have been gone from Cookstown for over 65 years but know the store is still there. I believe that either Cyrus or Irene was related to the McVey's and that's why the McVey connection.
