I'm trying to trace the origins of the Obertelli family.
My branch of the family moved to Carlisle about 1880, having first lived in Barrow after arrving from Italy. I know there are still some Obertellis living in the Morecambe and Bolton areas and wondered if they have any information on their Cumbrian cousins?
The head of the Carlisle Obertellis, Antonio disappeared between 1904-1911, probably returning to Italy. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where to look for any immigration records around 1880 and emigration/passenger list records for both periods?

The Antonio on the 1905 arrival was 50 and married. He was from Fano in north Italy, as were many others on the page.
The 1903 arrival was detained for about 1 day as a Likely Public Charge, but then admitted after enquiries.
There's also a 1907 sailing from Genoa to New York. It has an Antonio as a married day labourer from Morfasso. He was 32 and going to Boston to his brother-in-law Antonio Guarnier, and had never visited the US before. He's a possibility if, as you suspect, he returned to Italy.

Hello -
I noticed a delivery wagon the other day with the name Obertelli, Bolton, on the side. The name rang a bell as I had often seen it on the side of such wagons when I lived in Germany. When I put the name into Google, I found several sites relating to Obertelli genealogy. If you haven't already accessed them, they may provide you with some help.

Hi
Sorry for the delay in replying, but here goes
From what we know, Paul and Antony Obertelli came over to England from Como, Italy around 1880. Paul went to Bury, lancashire and Antony to Carlisle, I am assuming that this is your branch of the family?
Paul went on to marry Mary Amelia Abbatto (changed at some point to Abbot) on 1st Feb 1881 and they settled in business in Burnley, I believe the business didn't go well and they then moved to Bolton.
I think they had 10 children, but only seem to have info on 9 of them.
John born 11th aug 1882 born burnley
Paul born 28th jan 1884 died 3rd march 1888 born burnley
Mary Theresa 30th June 1885 born burnley
Rosa Elisabeth born 24th April 1887 died 1920 born burnley
Mary Anne born 31st march 1889 died 20th June 1955 born burnley
Catherine Louisa born 23rd July 1890 born burnley
Emma Amelia 1 Nov 1899 April 1979 born in bolton
Paul (my grandfather) 8th Feb 1902 died 8th Apr 1963 born in bolton
Joseph 19th Feb 1905 died 31st Aug 1979 born in bolton
My grandfather married Matilda Fletcher on 1st July 1933 and went on to have 5 sons. Joseph, Paul, Francis, John and James (my dad).
I am the youngest of three girls, and we have a half brother with my Dad.
If you need any more information, please let me know, I hope I haven't overlaoded you with useless information.

Hi Lisa,
I've just come across your posting re Obertelli.I have an interest in the family through Mary Amelia who married Paul Obertelli in 1881.Mary A was the daughter of Giulio Cesare Abbeto & Teresa Abbeto nee Bacigalupo. This Abbeto family appear under various names throughout the census,BMD records etc etc.
While I was researching the Abbeto family I also did a bit on the Obertelli's.I found all the children that you listed plus twins Mary Jane & Mary Christina, born & died in 1896 in Bolton.I'm not sure if they belong to Mary A & Paul though.
Do you by any chance have burial details for any of the family ?
Cheers

Hi Kath,
sorry I'm only just replying but October is a busy month for our house, and I've only just had time to sit and reply to you. Was it any particular members of the family that you are wanting information on? My Dad has all our info on it, as it was his brother who had done all the research, and he's recently taken all of the paperwork back which I had, but I can ask him as he'll have a better idea than me.
I do have a tree on Ancestry if that helps, I'm LisaWood100.
I do know that my Grandparents (Paul & Matilda) are buried in Tonge Cemetery in Bolton (I don't know if you are from this area). I also believe that there is a grave for a J Cesaer in the same cemetery. If you want to contact me directly my email address is (*), it maight make it a bit easier.

Hi Lisa,
Many thanks for your reply. As you can see I am unable to contact you directly as your email address has been removed, due to rootschat policy.
My dad's grandmother was a sister of Teresa Abbeto [nee Bacigalupo] and it would be great to know where she and Giulio are buried and any of their 4 children, including Mary Amelia who married Paul Obertelli.
I have been entering the family on the findagrave web site. Here is the link for Giulio. You can click on Teresa and their children from his page

Hi, I'm new to forums but I just found this on google. My grandmother, Helena Obertelli, was born in Carlisle and migrated to Australia when she was 19. I don't have a lot of information but would love to hear if you have any information on her or her family. I know that her parents owned and ran a local corner store in Carlisle.
