Title: Great Grandfathers occupation 1901 census
Post by: Francesanne on Saturday 10 July 10 20:29 BST (UK)
Hi, I've been trying to decipher my Great Grandfathers occupation on the 1901 English census with absolutely no success. It states that he was retired from the army but just can't make out his occupation or possibly name of company.
Is anyone able to end my despair & frustration? Many thanks in advance.

Just can believe how awful the handwriting is on census but many thanks for the suggestion. I just wondered if he could have been a PORTER. He was a member of the Kings Bodyguard (Edward V11) & a Yeomen Of The Guard and spent the majority of his life in the army.

His son (aged 16) worked at Leadenhall Market, London but no other clues on census.

I think it's Employed in Atlantic Trade Company or maybe Icelandic Trade Company.

I thought it might be Atlantic Press Co. until I enlarged the jpeg and I think the middle sqashed up word is "Services"

"Atlantic Services Co."

I've surfed to see if there's any history but I couldn't spot anything excepting travel plus I was surprised to see that there was already a telegraph cable laid under the Atlantic Ocean!

Could be Atlantic Trade Co which could be either name of company or possibly the type of company. As the son worked in Leadenhall market it it may be your g.grandfather worked in Leadenhall St which was the London centre of a lot of Shipping and Forwarding companies.

In which case the company may have been a subsidary of a larger company. I used to work for a S&F agent in Liverpool and one company I used to go to - Ellerman & Papyanni Lines - were also agents for Elders & Fyffes Lines, Africa Lines and Nigeria Lines.  The main office was a long room with the names and flags of each line. You went to the section you wished to book space on their ships.

Given his ex military standing he may have been a commissionaire at the company HQ

I agree with Annie B. I think it says Atlantic Trans Co. Trans may mean Transport. The enumerator has classed him as a Port worker without clarify the job. If you think he may have been a commissionaire there have been a number of threads about the Corps of Commissionaires. It seems they have an archive you can check.

There was a company called Altlantic Transport Company in 1901. Found a reference on the 19th century newspapers online.

If G.Grandfather was a retired Army Pensioner it's odds on he was a member of the Corps of Commissioners. These were ex-servicemen and their job was to - in want of a better word - 'police' the company he  was allocated to. Not sure if they were employed by the CoC or the company they worked with.

I met many of them in the 1960's and there was normally one per company. They wore a uniform not unlike the current Royal Marines No 1 uniform. Dark blue with a white peaked cap. Most Banks at that time also had Commissioners who could be found at the entrance.
