Title: Peter Perritt - Textile Designer 60/70's
Post by: FintryGirl on Tuesday 13 July 10 03:17 BST (UK)
I am looking for information on Peter Perritt - he designed fabrics in the 1960 and 1970.  He had a twin named Robert who was an artist, and they were born in Rutherglen in 1931, and had a cousin named Victor ( Victor James tablet) that lived in Fintry.  Peter designed textiles that are sought after even today.  There were just a few up on ebay that were used and went for quite a good price.

I did try googling him, I didn't find a lot.  Little about his designs and that he became a director of a fabric design college in London.  There was lots about a Peter Perrett a singer or a band or a Peter Perritt way back in 1700's or the usual Facebook and MySpace .   I am just trying to find out if there is more written in Scotland about him personnally.  I am from Canada and my mother knew him, she is just wondering what road his life took.

Thanks I'll try again.

Peter and his wife, Yvonne, were friends of my parents back in the 1980s. They moved to Cullen in north-east Scotland in 1979 and bought a small hotel which they ran there for about 10 years before retiring to Lanzarote in the Canary Islands.  Coincidentally, my mum bought a piece of screen printed fabric whilst on holiday in San Francisco in the late 70s.  She later met Peter and Yvonne and on a visit to our house, he pointed to the fabric (stretched on a frame on the wall) and said "I designed that!".  Small world, eh?

Thanks so much for replying, my Mum unfortunately passed away in 2011, but she would have been pleased to hear he did well. I have all of the pieces of fabric that he designed, that my mother had. I researched into getting a piece called The Blitz, which would have been very significant for my Mum as she lived through it in Clydebank, it is very hard to get. Seems like the only way to get some now is on ebay, if a hotel or hall are replacing their curtains. Thanks again.

You're welcome! I saw the post was quite old so wasn't sure if you'd still be receiving notifications. It really is a small world. I saw your post whilst googling his name. We have just bought his old hotel and are renovating it to turn back into a house. The place was in a real time warp and one room still had a psychedelic carpet which must have been one of Peters as when we lifted it, it was clearly a specially designed piece. I really liked it and we tried to save some of it but it was too far gone and ended up in the skip.  Here is a photo...

There is a piece of the Blitz design for sale here:

I could see that pattern as really nice on an evening dress in a silk fabric. :)

Just spoke to my mum. Peter also ran a picture framing shop and small gallery for a few years before they went to Lanzarote. I'd forgotten about that but remember going in there now.

Hi, Thanks for the link, I did notice this I think it was sold back 2012 on ebay, it was a curtain. Your Mum has a good memory, does she remember where the gallery was? I will send you pictures today to your email address. Nice to have met you.😊

I knew the Perritts and their hotel quite well.

The hotel is the Bayview Hotel http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3532413. In the Perritts' day it had an excellent reputation and the restaurant was very popular.

The shop/gallery was a little further up the street, on the same side and above the railway viaduct. I think it's this one http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2993846 but it might have been the one next door to the left.

Thank you for the links, I have a picture of Peter his brother Robbie and their cousin Victor, who was Victor of Victor James tablet, at my parents wedding, Victor was my parents best man,  if you are interested I could send you it by email. I  was always interested in Peters designs, I have a couple of pieces.
Thanks for your interest.

This is a picture of Victor James tablet and one of my favorite elusive Peter's designs The Blitz, that I have been trying to get a piece off and on for years.

Talking of small world & coincidences I saw the name Perritt & as I have been searching my husband's Pettit(t)s thought I'd take a look at this thread.
Nothing to do with the name but we were some of the last guests to stay at the Bayview, for a Scottish country dancing weekend in Buckie.  The Danish owner was returning home & told us that it was to become a private house, it must have wonderful views from the room at the top!

Oddly enough, I actually stayed there for the first and only time almost exactly a year ago, to avoid the alcohol and driving issue on a special occasion.

Hi
Peter and Yvonne are hale and hearty and living in Malaga. They have been there for 16 years. They have very fond memories of Cullen.

Hi Diane, ? If you are speaking to them please pass on a Hello from Alex and Edlina  Gray's  daughter from Fintry living in Canada since 1959.
Thanks for the correction on Victor, he was my dad's best friend since they were about 10. Both my Mum and Dad are gone but I would have loved to have passed all this on.

I have this piece in my scrapbook of treasures, called Heal's festival. My Mum brought it back on one of her trips back. I have pictures of many of the designs, but I tried quite a few times to bid on pieces of The Blitz, the blue one previous posed, wanted to get it for my Mum back before she passed as it was significant as she lived through the Blitz in Clydebank.
I tried to attach a photo of the piece I have but it was the picture was 1.9 mb would not allow it.
But if you are interested I could send the Wedding picture and material, photo to a email if you send me a personal message.
Regards
Rita

I am very pleased to have found this discussion as Peter's fabric designs are simply marvelous. Diane is there any way that I could pass a message through you to Peter? I run a small fabric business in Cheshire and I would like to ask him whether he would consider using our company to re-print some of his famous designs.

Hi
I speak to them most evenings so I will talk to him tonight. Don't know how you would go about reprinting as I am sure there would be a problem with copyright but I know I have his portfolio at my house in Cheshire which have some beautiful unprinted designs which quite frankly are stunning.

Hello Diane,

That is very kind of you. Many thanks. It would be fabulous to see Peter's designs in print again, or even as you say new unpublished designs if that were possible. We specialise in period fabrics so we would love to be able to work on this in some way.

Dads portfolio is work he did forty years ago. Only unearthed during a move. I think you would be amazed. I will speak to him tonight.

Hi Dianne, would be nice to see some more of his work.  Say hello from Nancy Whitelaw (my mum). She knew your parents in Cullen in the 80s and we now own the Bayview, though we are in the process of turning it back into a house.  Here is a photo of the upstairs former restaurant, taken before the renovation started, which still had your dad's carpet in it nearly 30 years later.  We had hoped to save a bit of it to use as a runner in the hall or a rug but it was just too worn out.  Really groovy design though.

And here is the piece of fabric I mentioned earlier in this thread.  I think he said it was called Sand, though I could be wrong.  How strange that my mum bought this in San Francisco, brought it back to Cullen then met the person who designed it and now we live in his former home! Small world.  ;D

Steve
Just spoke to Dad. He would consider selling his original designs in order to see them printed as he always see them as fabrics not a flat drawing.  He is curious as to how you print. Is it screen or another medium.
Please contact if interested.

Thanks, for posting the picture it is great to see. Are you related to the Whitelaw from Glasgow, they had a daughter Janet that died in her 20's.

No idea re the person from Glasgow. That side of my family were from Larkhall and my great grandfather had 23 kids(!) so I probably have a lot of distant relations.

I stumbled across this post & wonder if it is still active?

I adore my Blitz fabric curtains & headboard & wanted to find out more about Peter Perritt. It has been great to find out more in this thread.

I am particularly interested to know if there is any way I can view any of his portfolio works? Also, was anyone able to discuss reprints or fresh prints of his beautiful works?

Keeping my fingers crossed 🤞🏼 I do so LOVE his fabric prints.

We are currently trying to find some (orange) duvets to go with the headboard pictured :)

Welcome to rootschat. The place to come for interior design advice.  ;D

Can't help with your quest for more Peter Perritt designs, but have you considered one of the other colours (other than orange) from the headboard for your duvet? It's difficult to see the exact colours, but the brown in particular might make the headboard the feature and provide some contrast? Just a suggestion.

My daughter would kill for some of these prints. Does anyone know of any fabric suppliers? (preferably in Australia but would consider buying from elsewhere)?  :-\

Scruffydave, did your company end up printing any of these designs?

Thanks Ruskie - I've been looking at any of the colours that are in the design...preferably orange & pink, but I'm open to brown, too. Finding the right tone & saturation of hue is tough 🙈

Search continues!

The fabric is amazing - I would love to find more :) It would be wonderful if someone can reprint some of his designs - I know lots of people who would be interested.

Good luck in your hunt!

Yes, very "on trend" at the moment too. (my daughter loves your headboard by the way!) .... she also loves the sadly now long gone carpet posted earlier in the thread.  :'(  ;)

I'm hoping scruffydave has managed to come to some arrangement with Dianne regarding printing some new designs.  :)

I imagine that Peter would be pleased to know that there is a whole new generation who appreciate his work.

I'm so so sorry to hear that sad news Dianne. Thank you for letting us know.

It is a shame to hear that you don't think that your Dad's other designs will ever be published. There are so many lovers of his work worldwide, especially within younger generations.
