Title: Struggling to find a maiden name.
Post by: ..samantha.. on Thursday 15 July 10 13:56 BST (UK)
Hi...
On the most recent census i have found my 3x great grandparents. Edmund and Louise Webster. They were living at Stanley Lane in Teversal, Nottinghamshire. On the census it says they have been married for 22 years. Making their marriage approx 1889. It also says Louise was born in 1862 in Wilts Upper Church.
Im strugglingling to find a marriage / birth for her that matchs that info.
The only marriages i have come across in 1889 with a husband called Edmund Webster are for a Emily Moorhouse in Mansfield or a Louise Collins in Sussex. But i cant seem to find these names on the births for 1862 ish in Wiltshire.

Can anyone help me solve Louises maiden name, to save me having to buy a birth certificate for one of the children?

Many thanks....

Theres a Louisa Collins on 81 census b 1867 at Fishermans Anger Wilts  (Alderbury) where ever that is.This age would tally with the 1891 census age.

This could be a different explanation.

The census actually shows she was born in Upper Chute, Wiltshire.  I searched on the 1871 census for a Louise born in Upper Chute and found Ellen Louise Large, born Chute, Wiltshire in 1867.  There is a birth of an Ellen L Large registered in Andover in September 1866.  If you search for Upper Chute on Google, it is in the Andover district, so that is probably the correct person.

However, I cannot find a marriage to Edmund Webster.  The chances are they weren't married.  My g.grandparents in 1911 said they had been married for 28 years, which conveniently took them to the year  before my gran was born, but no-one has ever found a marriage for them.

Buying a birth certificate won't necessarily help as on my gran's birth certificate, her mother gives her maiden name, then her previous married name (the husband apparently drowned at sea) and then her "new married name" which was obviously the same as her "new husband".

By the way, Ellen Louise's father was a Richard Sheppard Large.  You can find him in Purton, Wiltshire in 1851 with his parents etc. 1861 with his wife and children (pre Ellen Louise birth) and on the 1871 census when they had moved to Hertfordshire.

I think Richard may have died before 1871, as on the 1881 census his wife is shown as a widow and a farmer, living back in Wiltshire.  Richard had been a corn dealer so probably wealthy enough for his wife to buy a farm of 60 acres.  I can't find Ellen Louise in 1881 though.

pity the other thread was locked - much more informative  :P

Lou* Collins isnt showing up in 1871 associated with Chute (or Upper Chute as per 1911) - see next posting

but she uses it as her PoB in the 1881, and then we see the 1889 marriage to Edmund Webster in Sussex.

Chute was in the Andover Regn District until April, 1880.

This is the only Louisa Collins born in Wilts 1861 - 1869

Births Mar 1866

COLLINS  Louisa    Andover  2c 221

That sounds good Mort.

I agree about the other thread being locked.  I'd typed out all my info (which may not be correct) and then found I couldn't post because the thread was locked.  I had to go back to Forum, to find out why it had been locked.

It also says Louise was born in 1862 in Wilts Upper Church.

Now seems that should be 'Upper Chute'  :)

Helly 7 dau ditto b ditto

Looks like she was either married before or had the children before she married

I dont think this is the right Louise. On 1911 Census its says they had a total of 4 children (3 living and one died). As i know from that same census she had a daughter nora and 2 sons harold and herbert, that only leaves the one child who died. I f they had have had minnie florrie and helly the amount of children would be at least 6.

The 1911 census asks for details of children born to the present marriage.

As Edmund was married previously to his marriage with Louisa, children of that marriage would not be included in the answer to that question.

Exactly.

Also look at your other thread - worked independantly of this one and reached the same conclusion that she was indeed neé COLLINS.

As it seems there was a Jane Webster death in 1883 aged 28 she probably had all these children before her hubby met Louisa

Hi, I'm new to this site. I just happened to put in my  great grandparents names Edmund Webster from willow bridge lane (father was also Edmund Webster) who married Emily Moorhouse from Ilkeston (father was George Moorhouse). They married on March 30th ( looks like year says 1887? I gave the orig marriage cert.) In county of Nottingham. Would like any info you have also please. I can't seem to find much info beyond this. Thankyou :)

Hi

I used to do the book keeping at Hippenscombe Farm, Chute Standen and know the area a little.  The villages of Upper Chute and Lower Chute are tiny even today and they are just across the Hampshire border in Wiltshire.

Louise Collins living at "Thickett" in 1871 and marrying Edmund Webster in 1889 in Uckfield is an excellent match for the profile originally given.

Thicket Cottage is still there today and can be seen on www.spareroom.co.uk

Oh wow , Thankyou sooooo much for the information on my great grandparents, Webster and Morehouse.  I don't have acess to data and I appreciate what you've given me greatly. I hold dear their marriage certificate and have always wondered about this side of the family :). I had forgotten my post and didn't think there was any info out there on them. Tonight I just happened to Google there name and brought me back here. I can't thankyou all enough <3 this gives me a little more to add and tell my mom :) Also now I know how my grandfather's name of Hartley is given from :) passed down just as I gave to my second son for a middle name. Now I can tell him more about it :)

Oh, now the connection is also made...I always wondered how my grandfather was given the name of Hartley..Martha and Jane Hartley. Now it makes sense. Passed down just like I've given it to my second son as a middle name :) How exciting!! Thankyou soooooooo much!!!
