Title: Robert GREGORY
Post by: prerunner1982 on Saturday 17 July 10 00:12 BST (UK)
I am looking for any information on a Robert Gregory born after 1793. He was a mariner as were his sons. I believe he probably was from or moved to Brixham as his children, grand children, and great grandchildren were all born there as well.

I do not know who his parent's were.  However he married Mary Bray and had 6 children.

John Saunders (1781)
Sarah (1786)
Robert (1787-1843)
Emmanuel (1789-1815)
William (1792)
Mary Ann (1793)

I am descended of Robert (b. 1781), then John (1813), then William George (1843), then William George Arthur (1880), then Thomas George (1902). then Thomas George Jr (1929) who was my mothers father.

John was the Owner/Master of the "Lady Bassett". From 1864-1866 as Master and from 1866-1871 as Owner/Master.

At some point William George ended up in Cardiff Wales.

Any help on the parents of Robert Sr would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Jon

Hi Jon,
Sorry if I am a bit confused here with your dates.
Are you looking for the Father of the children born 1781-1794 ?
And you are descended from the Son Robert born 1788 on the IGI ( Mother Mary BRAY) ?

In your post you say Robert born after 1793? Do you mean abt 1753?
He would have to be at least 18+ when he married Mary in 1780 in Brixham.

There nearest I can find is, Extracted IGI ;
Robert GREGORY, 27 December 1757, Fremington, Devon
Father WILLIAM
That would make him about 23 at Marriage.

Cheers,
Trish :)

Trish... you are correct, I butchered that info horribly and apologize for the confusion.

What I should have put was Death: after 1793.

I did not have his birth so thank you, even in your confusion you were able to provide me with info I didn't have.

Hi again,
I may have found something else.

1841 Census
Fremington, Devon
HO107/221/4/Fremington

Richard GREGORY, 84, Ind ( born c 1757)
Luke Gregory, 75, Ind (1766)
Samuel Gregory, 66, Lab
Jane Gregory, 65
Fanny, 15
All born in County
Now Luke is indexed as Lula but it looks more like Luke to me.

Now ages are often out in the 1841 Census but if you look at the other Children of William Gregory on the Batch of the possible Christening I gave you for Robert there are;
JOHN 05 July 1747
RICHARD 28 February 1750
WILLIAM 21 September 1755
ROBERT 27 September 1757##
MAGERY 03 May 1760
LUKE 07 September 1765##
MARY 10 October 1772

My Net is really slow at the moment as I am at the end of download limit for the month but thre are a few Trees on Ancestry showing Robert born c 1757, Fremington as the Son of;
WILLIAM Gregory and Margery TOSSELL

For the reason above (net) I cant access the Tree but if you leave it with me for a couple of days I will see if it links with your Tree ;)

Sounds wonderful... no hurry.  I understand the slow computer, I do most of my "digging" at work as my home computer is still on dial up.

Thank you again for your help.

I managed to get into the Tree but they have no extra info on Robert just Luke who they are descended from. But they have Robert and Luke as Brothers , Parents of both William and Margery.

I have deleted the bit where I asked if they could still be alive as the Census seems to prove they were.
( I'd found christenings before finding Census)

IGI has this Extracted Marriage;
William GREGORY
Margery TOSSELL, 13 January 1755, Fremington, Devon

Right names but christenings have 2 children born before this!
I will go back and recheck everything!

Ok we can be pretty sure of
MARGERY 1760 ( she died 08 March 1862)
WILLIAM 1755
ROBERT 1757
LUKE 1765
MARY 1762 ( she died 22 July 1766)

Take out ;
JOHN 1747 as his Mother was MARY
RICHARD 1750, Mother Mary
There is a William Gregory who married Mary RATTENBARY

This is unless William was Widowed and Married again to Margery which would be hard to prove.

Luke Gregory married Elizth DART, 29 May 1791, Fremlington, Devon
Samuel Gregory married Jane GOULD, 21 June 1807, Fremington, Devon
I dont think Samuel was a Brother though but maybe a Cousin.

Hi

I am also descended from Robert Gregory and Mary Bray via Robert Gregory (b 1787); Robert Gregory (b 1815); Robert Henry Gregory (b 1838) and my great grandfather was Ernest Atherton Gregory (b 1873) - he moved to Tenby in Pembrokshire. Although I can trace the Brays back a few generations the origins of Robert remain a mystery to me and everyone else I know who is researching this family. There were Gregorys along the coast who were fishermen/mariners about a century before Robert was born, but there seems to be no clear line of descent. I can find an Emmanuel Gregory son of Richard born abt. 1756 in Highweek who was a mariner and he is of an age that he could be a brother of Robert, but no trace of Robert's birth. I feel it unlikely that Robert's origins lie in North Devon, although this would be nice for me as that is where I was born, but cannot find him in South Devon.

Have you made any more progress at all?
