Hi
I have found a moth eaten uniform tunic with braiding on the sleeves and shoulders.The buttons I have managed to salvage,and I attach photo's of them.They bear the inscription 'Virtute et Industria'.Does anybody have any idea?The tunic was dark blue in colour but too far gone to photograph(it was in the eaves of my house).
All help gratefully received.

Virtute et Industria is the motto of Bristol (according to Google!) - do you live anywhere near there?

I live at the other end of the Country, the tunic was found along with a railway timetable dated 1939.

Definitely the motto of Bristol - famous for railways but also a port, so that doesn't help much. Do you know the history of your house? Is the uniform likely to belong to a previous owner?

Any chance of a much larger picture of the button? It is not possible to make out the design in the centre which might help. Was the timetable something like Bradshaws or ABC or was it issued by a railway company for a specific area?

The arms on the button are nothing to do with those of Bristol or the LMS so no obvious connection with either. Two crowns over crossed anchor & sword sounds vaguely military but looks pseudo-military. Could it have been a band uniform? The motto 'by virtue & industry' could have been used by all sorts of organisations, but might it have been Bristol based?

Hi Tsumi,
I read with great interest about your finding a Corps of Commissionaires jacket in your loft with a railway timetable of the 1930s, I work for the Commissionaires, today we are known as Corps Security but we still wear the uniform on M.O.D sites. I collect our Corps of Commissionaires items and have often wished I could locate one of the earlier jackets, the epaulets should be like a thick braid plat style with piping on the cuffs, do you still have it and would you be prepared to sell it.

I remember in the 60's/70's often passing the London Office of the Corps, in the Strand. Somewhere near Charing Cross Station if I remember correctly. Many of them ex-military. Always regarded them with respect.

The jacket is no longer .
We were clearing out a loft prior to having a loft extention and in the eves of the house was all sorts of packing bits of paper/cloth,we presumed it was to keep weather and birds out ,and when we had cleared it all, the jacket was the largest piece of material,it literally fell to pieces as we handled it,only by putting the bits together we knew what it was and a lot of elbow grease rubbing at the buttons left on.
You could have had it with pleasure if it had survived.
But thank you very much for the additional information of the jacket and button,s, very interesting.
