I came across the following on this website (http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/h/o/Muncie-R-Shortridge/GENE16-0001.html) while researching the Shortridges (related to Jane Shortridge who married a Moseley):
"The family of Shortridge is a lowland Scottish one, of which the branch under notice migrated southward and eventually crossed the border to settle amid the fells of Cumberland. "
What does the under notice part mean? and why would they have been under notice?

I rather think it would be in relation to the Clearences. The landowners cleared crofters off their lands so they could graze sheep. The crofters were put under notice to quit the land. Many migrated to Canada, US and Australia.

Thanks Leonie, had heard of the Highland clearances, wasnt aware it was in the lowlands as well.

Yep. I have a side shoot, long time back, came from Galashiels. Not exactly highlands. No actual proof that they were part of the clearences, but they moved to Edinburgh in the late 1700's then migrated to Australia in the next generation, mid 1800's.

The branch under notice means the branch of the family tree being studied.
It comes from:

My Grandmother was a Shortridge. Her brother was Travis Shortridge who was the pilot of the Southern Cloud passenger airplane which disappeared in Australia in the 1930s and wasn't found until the 1950s. Our lines descend from William Shortrigg and Betty Routledge who are the head of the branch discussed in the above article.

Son of James & Ann (nee Crocket(t))
William married Elizabeth Lunn 16 Feb 1873 All Saints, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland
After the marriage they moved back to Dumfries where William died 06 Oct 1930 Moorheads Hospital
