Title: George Boothroyd b.Wakefield 1836
Post by: Trowergirl on Monday 26 July 10 20:52 BST (UK)

I'd be grateful for a good source of birth/christening for my direct ancestor George Boothroyd b. Wakefield 1836.

His marriage certificate of 1862 in Southwark London gives a father "John" but I cannot place him directly with him in Yorkshire - however I have got him with Job and Mary Boothroyd at the age of 5 in Kirkles Hall and they come up as parents of John (born in Sandal Magna & married to Elizabeth White).

This would make a concrete link to a long line of Boothroyds going back to Almondbury in 1500s so is a key link.

Kind regards

TG

That looks spot on thank you so much!  Job, John's father and George were all gardiners to begin with so that fits too!

 :) Happy holidays TG

Hi

Kirklees Hall is at Hartshead and was in the ownership of the Armytage family. This family had lands all over the area and Kirklees Hall is near to the place were Robin Hood is supposed to have died and he is said to be buried in it's grounds.

Regards
John

::) This is such good news - I now have basic details of the male line going back to Elizabeth I - am hoping to do a tree for my "big" brother who is 60 this year.  I have loads of baptism and marriage dates & names for the line all based in Almondbury - is there a good CD/online source that I could flesh out the picture with occupations etc?

My brother did one of the Ancestry DNA mapping things and looks like Dad's line is Viking - the area was well known for textiles which chimes for us - but that was more a Saxon-based role originally, so it would be great to see what is there - so far gardeners, shoemakers only.

Have about 10 names to look up x Again really appreciate your expertise!  TG

Hi

You are very welcome

If you stuck with the names you could always post them and see what we can come up with.

Not sure what kind of CD etc you mean - sorry being a little slow here :-[

Hi Trowergirl

I have a lot of Almondbury resources, so if you supply me with names and dates of events I can probably find some occupations, places where they lived etc,  possibly even a photo of a signature (or a wobbly cross if they could only make a mark!)

Regards,

Lesley

Hi Trowergirl,

I am descendant of Richardus 'Boothroyd' who was married to Sarah (born Jackson) with the same dates you have. I know this thread is really old but can we make contact so I can go further back?

Thanks,
Joe

Can you help me out with the Boothroyd family please?

Hi Joe
You don't say which of Richard BOOTHROYD'S children you are descended from?

Trowergirl seems to suggest it was Richard Boothroyd chr 30th January 1675/6 who married Sarah Jackson. That Richard is the son of Thomas.
However, there is another Richard Boothroyd chr December 15th 1678, son of John.
I can only see one marriage for a Richard Boothroyd, which is indeed to Sarah Jackson. The record says that he is a pauper and both are of Almondbury. Just 3 months after the marriage, on 15th July 1699: 'Johannis f Ricardi Buthroid vill pauperis immature natus est, immediate bapt et postea sepult.(John son of Richard Buthroid of Almondbury, pauper, was born prematurely, immediately baptised and afterwards buried' The fact that this firstborn son was called John suggests to me that Richard Buthroid is the one chr. 1678

Hi Lesley - thanks.

I believe Richard and Sarah Jackson had a son called Daniel (who married Hannah) which is the line through which I descend. I noticed Trowergirl listed further Boothroyd names and ancestors and I am trying to work out the link/tree past Richard Boothroyd.

Thanks!
Joe

What birth date do you have for Daniel?  And marriage date to Hannah?

I can't see a Daniel with father Richard.

Hi Lesley,

I have found sources on Ancestry.com - Daniel born 1702 married Hannah Hebblewaith. They then had a son called Daniel born 1734 and married to Ann (Foster).

What birth date do you have for Daniel?  And marriage date to Hannah?

I can't see a Daniel with father Richard.

I can see the marriage on 14th November 1754 between Daniel Boothroyd and Ann Foster, which takes place in Whitgift in East Yorkshire.
I can also see the birth of a Daniel in 1734 in Halifax, but I can't see any reason to link the two.

Lesley

John Scutt married Susannah Boothroyd in Whitgift near Goole - some 50+ miles from Almondbury. The marriage has John as a widower but both are 'of this parish'.

Susannah was baptised in Whitgift 11 Jun 1758 d/o Daniel. It looks as though he had a couple more children baptised in Whitgift: Mary 1760, William 1762 then moved to the Halifax area and went nonconformist with , Daniel 1766, Sarah 1768 and Joseph 1770 baptised at the Independent Chapel, Warley near Halifax.

Daniel Boothroyd married Ann Foster 14 Nov 1754 in Whitgift both of this parish.

You'd then expect Daniel to have been baptised in Whitgift or surrounding area but there is the baptism in Halifax 16 Feb 1734. So, maybe he left the Halifax area to live and/or work in Whitgift but then went back between 1762 and 1766. Perhaps Ann died and he moved back and remarried?

Then there is a baptism in Elland, near Halifax 3 May 1702 s/o John. No Daniel baptism in Almondbury and no father Richard!

Jill

ADDED: FindMyPast have a marriage 2 May 1723 in Halifax between Daniel Botheroyd and Ann Heblet!! Unfortunately, there's no digital copy of the entry to look at.

Ann dying and Daniel moving back to Halifax a very likely scenario as there is a marriage in Halifax 8th April 1765, between Dan Boothroyd, weaver, Warley OTP and Sara Scholfield, Warley OTP which fits perfectly with the location and dates of the second batch of children.

Good one, Lesley! So that would make Sara nee Scholfield Daniel's mother not Ann nee Foster.

Progress!  ;D

John Boothroid married Phoebe Hopkinson in Halifax 25 Jul 1699, both of Elland.

These are John's children I've managed to identify with Elland baptisms (all with father John and abode as Elland):

18 Feb 1699/1700 Grace and John (marked as 'possible twins') John buried 28 Feb 1699/1700

Phoebe, wife of John Bothroyd of Elland was buried in Elland 28 May 1700 but I haven't yet found a remarriage but there are more children:

3 May 1702 Daniel
20 May 1706 John
24 Jul 1709 'Jer' (which I assume is Jeremiah)
7 Mar 1711/12 Phoebe
