Hi does anyone know of the link,if there is one between the two McCoskry familys living in Rhonehouse 1851 census
My side Elisabeth 37 mother widow Nee Copland
Nathaniel 10
Mary 9
Robert 4
The other family
Isabella McC 70 Head of house
James McC 35 son
Samuel Lock 14 nephew
Robert McC 5
Ithink that there is a link because I believe there is a stone in mid kelton churhyard with the second family in there and they had sons called Nathaniel also aswell as Robert so I think that these are family names any help would be appreciated .

Hi
On the 1841, there are these families ~
Rhonehouse, Kelton
869 ED 3 P 6
Mccoskey
John, 56, farmer
Isabella, 55
James, 24
Amelia, 20
Samuel Locke, 6
All b. Kirkcudbrightshire
(bpt of a John McCroskie in Kirkcudbright 29 Oct 1795 to John McCroskie and Mary Kermont)
and
Rhonehouse, Kelton
869 ED 3 P 7
McCosky
Robert, 30, ag lab
Elisabeth, 25
Nathaniel, 1
I've not been able to establish a connection between John and Robert so far but, if names are significant, an Al(l)an McCoskrie of Twynholm had, amongst others, a Nathaniel (13 Oct 1782) and a Samuel (29 July 1784) baptised.
I'll check my MIs later.

I've found this birth/baptism which might well be Robert as the age fits with the 1841 (30-34):
Irongray - 30 June 1808 Robert Coskry son of John Coskry and Isobel Walker
If you recall, John's wife Isobel(la) on the Kelton MI was Isobella Walker
This would mean that Elisabeth was Isabella's daughter in law

Also baptisms at Kelton:
29 April 1840 Nathan (I presume Nathaniel in the censuses)
13 April 1842 Mary
21 June 1847 Robert
All children of Robert Coskry and Elisabeth Coupland
and ~
9 April 1821 Amelia daughter of John Coskry and Isabella Walker

A few more baptisms for children of Robert and Elisabeth in Kelton. The surname is entered as McCoskry here:
5 August 1844 John
16 July1846 Robert (possibly died as another in 1847, see above)
20 August 1848 Jane

In your last post about the MI's at Kelton Cemetery you quote two headstones.
The 1st one starting as below,
In memory John McCoskry died at Rhonehouse 4-1-1894 age 68...
The second one next to the first one which starts,
Erected by Samuel McCoskry etc.....
These are not two seperate headstones, but are in fact one headstone. The details are engraved on both the front & the rear of the stone.
This headstone is up close to the corner of a wall,so only half of the back panel can be read. Another stone is
covering the front panel and again only part of the front can be seen. This other stone at the front relates to a William McCoskry who died 1925.His wife Agnes Gibson died 1923 & their daughter Jane who died 1937.
I have a photo if you would like a copy.

Angus,
Was there a connection to Gadgets Samual McCoskery d. 1797 in reply #5 to those you were researching?

Hi Jimmy as far as I can definatley confirm with records is the Marriage of Robert Coskry to Elisabeth Copland feb 9 1840, and the 1841 census that gives his age as 30. So that gives his birth around 1811 there are not many McCoskry's around Rhonehouse and my suspicions are that they are probably all related from before this, but up to now I don't have any proof of this altho the family's that live in the area both seem to use Robert and Nathanial as names
the link below takes you to my family tree it may be of some help to you I wonder why you ask maybe you have some info I may find useful ?
Cheers Angus

My 5th GG Father was Samuel McCoskery, his grand-daughter Mary Coskery in turn had a daughter Anne who married James Coupland (b c. 1829, Kirkmahoe) so seems possible that with both Couplands and McKoskerys there may be a link to your own tree. I'm not currently subscribed to Ancestry, but planning to in near future so perhaps once I have looked at your tree I'll be back in touch.

Cheers Jimmy if I find a link I will post it up so keep a watch for my posts . I didn't think you needed to subscribe to ancestry to look at the trees only if you wanted to start a tree of your own altho you may have to join but not pay anything
good hunting

Samuel McCoskery is also my husband's 5 x Great grandfather, through Mary's son Gavin Milligan. Would be interested in sharing any information with you.

Hi,
I've been working on and off for some years on the Gavin Milligan who married Mary McCoskry family and have never been able to find Mary's parentage. Her age varies in the census and she seems to have been born 1804-1807.
I'm interested that Marjorie says that she descends from Samuel.Do you have a record of her birth or parentage somehow ?
Although many of her children with Gavin were born in Kelton, she gave her birthplace as Twynholme.
This sent me to parish registers where I found the following entries for Twynholm:
1782 Nathaniel son Alan McCoskre Twynholm
1784 Samuel son Alan McCoskre Twynholm
1786 Busby son Alan McCoskre Twynholm
1796 Alan son Alan McCoskre Twynholm
Sadly the records for later seem to have been absent.
So these christian names seem to tie across to the ones which you have all found and I offer them in case it helps.
cheers

I have a copy of Mary's death record from Scotland's People which shows her father as Allan Coskrie and her mother as Margaret Herries which more or less ties on to the tombstone in Tongland.

Marjorie,
Many thanks.
I have her Mary Milligan (nee McCoskrie) death as March 4th 1876 aged 70 years. Is that the right one ?
For some reason I obviously didn't see the whole thing as I have no note of her parents from that record.
Do you have similar info for Gavin Milligan by any chance ? and from which of their children does your husband descend ?
best wishes,

I have Mary Coskrie's death as 18/2/1876 age 70 at St Marys Street, Kirkcudbright.
Gavin Milligan d 23/5/1886 in Kirkcudbright age 86. His parents were William Milligan and Janet Hornell.
My husband is descended from their son Gavin Milligan.
Happy to share any information - drop me a PM.
