Hi Joe, Sorry but my info is out of date,I found William McKay
and Mary Wilson on the 1841 and 1851 census.
Also William died 22.11.1856 in Manse St Fraserburgh.
Mary Wilson must have died between 1848 and 1851 as
she wasn`t on the 1851 census and William was a
widower when he died.As yet can`t find a death cert
for Mary or where there young family went after
William died.  Are you researching the McKay or Wilson
tree`s? If i can help with any info please let me know.
  Kind Regards,  Roe.

hi pal,

sorry but i am not researching the mckay family, i came across your post and noticed that you had no response, i thought i would bring it to light again, for we have so many guests at the moment i was hoping that someone might connect if they saw the details.

have you posted a request for the children on the 1861 census? mary catherine and david have to be somewhere??

maybe you can ask if there is any rootschatters who live in fraserburgh and know the location of the nearest graveyard/parish to manse street, if you do not ask, you will never know.

still searching

I have been looking for my Great grandfather, Robert S. McKay for the better part of 60 years.  It is said he was born in Fraserburgh, October 13, 1813.  However, there is absolutely no record of Robert there.  It appears as though he left Fraserburgh before the 1841 census.  His middle name was, according to his obituary, STEPHENSON. I am beginning to wonder if Robert may have been adopted or fostered out to a Stephen or Stephenson family.  I have found a James MacKay who married Elizabeth Stephen Oct 30, 1803 in Tyrie. I believe there is a family here somewhere, but I cannot prove it
According to Robert's biography, which he wrote he wrote for an OHIO USA County history; he left Aberdeenshire around 1836 to go to Manchester, England—I assume for work.  He was a stone mason and Manchester was in the middle of the industrial revolution, and building was a major occupation of masons.  In Manchester he married Emma Hurst/Hirst around 1845, and they had a child William Wallace McKay born 1845.  The only record I can find of this family in Manchester is William’s birth record. Again Robert left Manchester before the 1851 census.
Robert went to Springfield, Ohio USA, in 1848.  He was followed by an Archibald C. McKay in 1854.  Archibald was a shoemaker who had married Jessie McBeath sometime around 1848. They had two children, a daughter Jessie b.1850 and a son Alexander Stephen b. 1848., who went with them to Springfield.  Like Robert I can find no record of Archibald in Freaserburgh except on the 1851 census.  He is on the 1860 census in Ohio.  There is no record of the relationship of Robert and Archibald in either Fraserburgh or Springfield.
Does anyone have any information on Elizabeth Stephen, who married in 1803 to James MacKay b. 1784, Robert Stephenson McKay b. 1813, or Archibald McKay b. 1808?  Does this story ring a bell with anyone? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
David

Hi  Mckay734,
I'm not 100% sure but I think I may have located your Robert McKay. He's to be found on the 1841 census living Cleveland Street, Hartlepool, Stockton & Sedgefield, Durham, England. He's with Ann, Martha and Leslie (the transcriptions say Lester). This is the only census Robert is with his family as by 1851 Ann, Martha and Leslie are back living in Aberdeen. By 1861 Ann then aged 49 and Martha aged 26 are living in Fraserburgh. Ann died in 1869 and from her death certificate I know her name was Ann Leslie Couper, daughter of William Couper and Martha Fraser.
Ann's Birth:

When Martha dies in 1889 her father is not showing as deceased (see snip).

Ann and Robert's marriage

Of course this may be another Robert Mckay, stone mason, born around 1810 with a Fraserburgh connection  ::) I think I'd want to see the OPRs to see if they offer any clues.
