I am attempting to obtain some information on my G/G parents, Richard & Marie Dodd.
I believe Richard may have been born in 1861 at Salop Howe, Stretton, or Mytton(spelling) but all I know of my G/G mother is her given names of Marie Jane.
No census lists that I have sighted gives her maiden name & this has prevented me from continuing my search within the Dodd family tree.
Their two children were Mary Elizabeth Dodd(my G/mother), born in 1883 & Emily L Dodd, birth date ukn.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to RC :)
On the 1891 census RG12/2106/55/10 M jane Dodd is down as being 28 (b.c. 1863) and born Billbrock, Staffs. The two girls, aged 8 and 5 resp, are down as being born Atcham
This looks like a possible marriage registration for Richard Dodd with a Maria Paddock on the same page:
Sep q 1882, Atcham vol 6a page 1085
However, there is also one with a Mary Tipton on the same page:
Dec q, 1882, Atcham, vol 6a page 1281
I don't see a marriage to a Mary /Marie/Maria Jane so far
It might be best to obtain your grandmother's birth certificate and this looks like Mary Elizabeth's birth registration:
Mary Elizabeth Dodd, March q, 1883, Atcham v 6a p 673
This should confirm her mother's maiden surname
There is a birth registration for an Emily Jane Dodd but no Emily L
Emily Jane Dodd Sept q, 1885, Atcham vol 6a page 676

In 1901, RG13/2576/62/4 Richard's wife is down as Maria Jane, 39, born Castle Foregate
Castle Foregate is the central part of Shrewsbury.

:D
Possible in 1881:
Maria Paddock, 22, b. Codsall Staffs, living Atcham reg district - RG11/2654/44/4
Bilbrook is next door to Codsall

Gadget,
Thanks for that info, it now gives me something to research into. Looking into Mary Dodd I see she was born at Atcham so there's a possible link there.
Again, thanks

Another possible ~
Have a look at Mary Jane Paddock on the 1861 in Walsall, Staffs. RG9/2014/136/27
I think the birth cert is the way to go though and then the appropriate marriage cert for her father.

Gadget,
Have ordered a birth certificate for Mary Elizabeth Dodd (G/mother) thru GRO, & should arrive within 15 days. Hopefully this will verify most of my queries on the Dodd family.
Thanks for the assistance given,

Gadget,
Birth Certificate arrived today, confirming my G/mother Mary Elizabeth Dodd was born on 23 Dec 1882, Atcham, & her mother's maiden name was Maria Jane Paddock.
The G/G father, Richard Dodd was born in Mytton ???(spelling). This hopefully should allow me to continue searching for his lineage. Any advice on which is the best way to proceed would be much appreciated.
Again, thanks for your work on this query. :D

Hi again :)
The marriage cert should give his father's name/occupation:
This looks like a possible marriage registration for Richard Dodd with a Maria Paddock on the same page:
Sep q 1882, Atcham vol 6a page 1085
I'll have a look on the censuses again but need to refresh my memory about your family.
Will report back :)

On the 1891 census, previously mentioned, Richard gives his birthplace as Church Stretton and his age as 31.
This is the nearest that I can find for him on the 1861:
Little Stretton, Church Stretton
RG9/1844/51/17
Henry Dodd, 24, labourer - farm, b. Church Stretton
Mary, 23, b. -do-
Richard, 1, b. Acton Scott
Sarah Jones, grandmother, wid, 81, b. Church Stretton
Elizabeth Jones, mother in law, wid, 56, b. Rushbury
All birth places are in the Church Stretton Reg Dist.
Info on Acton Scott here:

There is a place called Minton close to Little Stretton and Acton Scott. Map location:

Marriage
March q, 1859, Church Stretton, vol 6a p 855
Henry Dodd and Mary Jones are on the same page
The Sarah and Elizabeth Jones on the 1861 were therefore most likely to be Mary's grandmother and mother.

Having difficulties locating Henry Dodd on the 1851 but wondering about this family:
1851
Little Stretton, Church Stretton
HO107/1984/222/2
Dodd
Richard, 31, ag lab. b. Eaton

Dodd
Richard, 25, ag lab

all b. Shropshire

A bit more ~
IGI has the baptism of a Anna Dodd, 30 Dec 1838, Acton Scott. Parents - Richard Dodd and Anne
I don't see one for Henry though.
No birth registration for Anna/Hannah but here's one for Emma ~
Emma Dodd, Sept q, 1850, Church Stretton vol 18 p 35
This should give Anne's maiden name.
there are a couple of protected trees on Ancestry for Richard Dodd, b. 1816,Eaton. Shropshire

Gadget,
Many thanks for the info, I'll search further into all you have given me, & decide on which certificate to send for. I think the 1861 census, RG9/1844/51/17, is looking good as all I had on Richard was his birth year of 1861.
Richard's occupation is shown as Farm Labourer, it seems to match with his father's occupation.
Again, much appreciated.
