Title: patient Cheshire Lunatic Asylum
Post by: speedwobble on Wednesday 04 August 10 20:12 BST (UK)
I am trying to find information for my Gr Gr Grandmother who was listed in the 1901 census as a patient in the Cheshire Lunatic Asylum.  I would like to find out when she was admitted, when she was discharged and why she was there.

Can anyone advise me on where I could look?  Or better still if could someone local have a look for me as I am in Northern Ireland and can't get across to check it out myself.

Her name was Alice Gardner.

There is no Alice Gardner with that profile on the 1901 for Cheshire

Hello soeedwobble,

The information you require will only be accessed in the Cheshire Record Office which holds the records for the Chester Asylum, known locally as "The Deva".

Records are normally closed for 100 years and you would need to prove your relationship to see these possibly.

It is likely to be a time consuming task and I doubt that you will succeed in getting a volunteer but you never know. It might be more viable to ask the RO to research this for you.

I might be able to find her on the census, most patients of asylums are identified by their initials only. I can find a few AG initials for the Chester asylum but don't have enough information to see which might be her. Do you have a year and place of birth?

Jo

Hi, Speedwobble, I found details of a great, great aunt who was a patient from 1881 to her death in 1911.  I found her in the admission registers, which are held by the Cheshire Archives and Record Office as stated by Jo Harding.  If Alice was admitted pre- 1910 then I might be able to find her in one of these.  They don't give a great deal of information, but do show name, age, condition on admission and who signed the papers for her admission.  Do you have any idea when she was admitted?

Hi, Speedwobble, please could you give some more information on Alice e.g. birth year, birth place?
As CaroleW has noted, I too cannot find her in Cheshire in 1901.  Is this the correct year and do you have a census reference for her please?
Regards
Kathb

Hi

Cheshire had two county Lunatic asylums

Details of the records held and where - the clinical and patient casebook records are the most informative

Countess of Chester Hospital (present name still open in Chester)

Parkside Hospital Macclesfield (final name now closed)

Hi, Speedwobble, there were two asylums noted as Cheshire.  One in Chester and one in Macclesfield. I note that your Alice was in Macclesfield area in 1911 therefore in the Maccelsfield (Parkside Asylum) .  Do you want me to look at what is available on my next trip to the Cheshire Archives?

Hello,

I'm looking for information on my relative, Elizabeth Moore, who is listed in 1881 census in "Cheshire County Lunatic Asylum" in Macclesfield. Would anyone have access to, and be willing to do a lookup at the records that might give details about why she was there and who signed the paperwork to place her there or any other information that might help fill in the gaps?

Thanks so much,
Brenda

Thank you so much Rolnora! I was able to determine that Elizabeth Moore is not mine relative. Although it is disappointing in I thought for sure it had been her and can't locate her anywhere else. At least I can remove any doubt.

Many thanks for your help!
Brenda

Thank you! Elizabeth Cummings Moore was last seen in 1871 census in Stockport with her children. Prior to that in 1861 in Stockport with her husband Anthony Moore still at home at the time. in 1871 Anthony is gone but she was still listed as married. So I've lost both Anthony and Elizabeth but I know what became of most of the children. Anthony was born in Ireland and Elizabeth in Scotland and both ~1831.

Hi Brenda,
There is a death reg for an Elizabeth Moore in Stockport 1879. Her age 52 is a bit out but it's worth considering.

Hi
I am looking for information regarding a patient at Cheshire Lunatic Asylum.

I have come across the information on ancestry on the 1881 census. However i do not know the circumstances? and how long he was there for,? whether he died there? and what of? Also whether it is visable to see who had him admitted there whether it was family or he was sectioned by the state?. I am unsure if i would be able to have access to my grt grt grandfathers notes or not as it is more that 101 years ago?

His name is Abraham Emms and was a gardener from Norfolk/Suffolk. In 1881 he would have been 60 or around there in 1881.

This is a new development for me as the name Abraham runs through the family then stops with this abraham and wondering if lunacy would be the reason his name didnt continue down the line any further. From what i can see he wasnt married nor did he have children. Again this may be due to a health issue.

If anyone can help me i would be forever grateful! TYVM

Hi,
I am currently looking for information about my Great grandmother Joyce M Pemberton who was born in 1922 and died in 1988. I belive she was a patient at the Cheshire Asylum and would like to discover when she was sent to the Asylum and when she was discharge and why she was there. Is there anyone I can contact or a website that I can find this information?
Thanks, Paris
