Title: Oram Family - Great Haywood
Post by: Annad on Thursday 05 August 10 21:41 BST (UK)
Has anyone done any research on the Oram family of Great Haywood? I'm related through John Oram born in 1846. I've found his parents, William Oram born 1811 and Ann Cox born C 1816, but his grandparents remain a bit of a mystery. Their names were Thomas Oram born 1782 and Lydia born C 1788, I have no marriage for them and have no clue what her maiden name was. Any ideas?

Thanks

Anna

Are you sure you have the right Thomas Anna?  There's a Thomas baptised Colton 8.7.1781 to Thomas and Mary Oram and a Thomas baptised Colwich 2.6.1782 to Wm and Elizabeth Oram.  Both places are near to Gt Haywood.  I have an old book on the history of Gt Haywood/Colwich, I'll have a look in there later for any Oram's.  Linell.

Hi Linell,

I'm not 100% sure that I've got the right Thomas, with so little to go on in the way of records it's difficult, but I plumped for the Thomas born in Colwich as the family seemed to  be most associated with that area.
I really apreciate you checking your parish records and as Ormes is the old spelling of Oram, I'm hoping that's maybe my William selling sparrows!
Can I ask you where you got your parish records from?

Thanks for your help.

Anna

Hi Anna, I got the records from a book I have called, 'The History of Ancient Haywood.'  But all this information is available at Stafford Archives.  John Ormes could have been Wm's father?  No it's not easy.  There are also Land Tax Records for this period, circa 1780 - 1830 which lists all the Rent Payers and Land Owners, may be worth looking at those and find all the Ormes in the Colwich/Haywood area.  Because one Thomas was baptised at Colton and the other at Colwich is not a good enough reason to claim him as yours, if you see what I mean!  One of them may have died, this is where you also need to search the Parish Registers for burials, sorry, but Pre 1837 it is not easy!  Best Wishes from Linell.

No, you're right. I do agree that it's not the best idea to claim the Colwich Thomas as mine, but it is there with a question mark until I can find out some more about them. I'm very particular about getting my facts right. It's a shame there doesn't seem to be a good Staffs FHS around and I can't find an archive service at the council offices, all very frustrating.

Anyway thanks again for your help - much appreciated.

Thanks Linell, you've been more than helpful. The Grt Haywood LHS sounds like a good starting place.
