OK so I have hunted and hunted but can't work out HOW to PM someone.... I have done a surname search, found someone I wish to PM, and can't figure out for the life of me how.
(Please, once I have an answer and am very embarrassed, can a mod delete this topic??? :) )

Welcome to Rootschat.
You can't send a PM until you've made a few posts. When you've done that, click on the green scroll on the left of the person's post and you will be able to send them a message.

Welcome to RC!! No reason to feel embarrassed it takes a while to find your way about but it's worth it.
You can't send a pm until you have posted a small number of messages. Not sure if it is three or five?
Then you will have the facility.
Just answer this and add a couple more and you will be fine.

It's 3 posts you have to make before you can PM someone. :) You can also click on their name if you want to message someone. You don't need to wait till you have something useful to add - you can just waffle on here - I think you only have add one more comment before you're up to 3 posts and can send a PM ... ;D

Now you can send a PM.
It may seem a daft system but it's done to stop spammers.

If you'd like to ask for this thread to be deleted just click on the report to moderater link on the right of one of your posts and send your request. Sometimes it's useful for threads to remain to help others.

If we delete the thread then your number of posts will go down so you won't be able to send PMs! Best leave it for a while until you have a few more posts to your credit. I think it is explained in the how to use rootschat bit but no doubt, like me, you never read the instructions when you are keen to get started on something!

I'm glad you are all getting sorted on the PM front - just to say though, it is heaps better to post your initial enquiries online rather than conducting everything by PM. Not that you were, but Rootschat itself saves your "work" for you and others can contact you because they know what your interests are, or maybe can answer a question that your P contact couldn't!

Welcome to Rootschat, wimpsy. A PM = Personal Message (for exchanging things like email addresses, recent family information and personal details). It's explained in Help pages - www.rootschat.com/help/pms.php
There's lots of other information in Help pages and other places to start you off here. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

As bearkat said, ask if you get stuck - once you get the hang of it, it is easy. The main rule is don't mention anyone who is, or who may still be living.

As NannyJan says, only "serious" posts count, so anything that you've posted on the Totally off Topic boards (which I see that all but one of yours are) wont count.
