Title: You know you're addicted to Genealogy when ....
Post by: Lloydy on Monday 27 September 04 10:37 BST (UK)
Found this by accident while browsing for pictures for Kazza - How many of you can answer to yes to all the questions??? LOL

I Am Addicted To Genealogy!

When you are in a different city do you look through the phone book to find people that have the same surname as one of your ancestors?
Do you get excited when you drive by a Cemetery?
Do you talk about your deceased ancestors as though they were still a live?
Does your librarian or the person that works at the archives know your whole life story?
Do you check the obituaries everyday?
Does your spouse call the library to see when you are coming home?
Do you spend your vacation tracking down ancestors in county courthouses?
Do you keep pictures of tombstones or long deceased ancestors in your wallet?
Can you remember the date an ancestor died but you can't remember to feed the pets?
Instead of an emergency kit in your car you have a research kit.
Does your boss call the library or archives to see when you will be coming back from your lunch break?
If you said yes to one or more of these you are an addicted genealogist

Jan :)

I am a total addict.   :D And proud of it.

I knew I was adicted when I did not want to shop for new handbags or purses (a past addiction that got me 45 new bags) and would rather spend my pin money on birth marriage or death certificate.

How bad is that!

Definitely yes for the second one.  It happened to me for the first time on Saturday.  I've only been doing my tree for about six months and we were coming down the M40 and up on a hill at the side of the road was a cemetery and I had this sudden urge to go and check it out!!!  It wasn't even in an area I've got ancestors though, that's the stupid thing.  LOL :)

Love the Van Gogh family tree :)

Addicted.....Me?

When I first started, I was only doing a couple of lookups a week, nothing heavy, I could handle it......I thought :-\

It wasn't long though before I was doing them every day,but I still thought I could handle it.... ???......after a while lookups weren't enough, I needed more information, which is how I got started with certificates.....and once I'd started on them, there was no turning back ;D

Well done Jan and Clincher,

Welcome to Genealogists Anonymous!

Admitting to Genealogy addiction is the first step and you've both done really well ;D

Jan- we've  all been there, waiting for the postie to arrive, I hope he came through for you as I understand the desperation and anxiety caused by late delivery of certificates.

Clincher- Like me,I see you've also progressed onto transcriptions, there's no turning back now, however much you might want to.....If you should run out of transcriptions and need some to tide you over, don't worry, I know a very nice lady in Wales who has got some if your stuck ;D

Keep your spirits up,Mick ;)

I suppose I'll have to resort to taking long walks in graveyards and visiting local libraries etc, - anything that is free. :-\

I've always promised myself that whilst over here in Cheshire visiting Mum, I would ask someone to take me to all the places I have been wandering through on the 1841-1901 census.  On Sunday we had an unexpected treat when my Nephew took us all out to lunch in a people carrier.  I was sitting chatting away when suddenly I saw a sign.  Aaagh stop!  Screach to a halt.  What? What's wrong.  Nothing...look a sign, we are in Pickmere.  We then went through Toft, Mobberley, Knutsford, Arley, Grt Budworth....I was in paradise, oohing and aaahing.  Everyone thought I had gone potty. But it was the area all my ancestors came from on Dad's side, so now when I am on my census wanders again, I will be able to picture exactly where I am.  Wonderful.

Whilst researching my Dad's side, I found my Grt Grt Grandad's brother living in Mobberley and discovered he had re-married in 1842.  I sent for his marriage cert, and there was his Father's name on it Richard Yarwood Gamekeeper.  I was dancing round the house, saying look! Look! Richard Yarwood, something with his name actually written on it.  Hubby just gave me the usual look and patted me on the shoulder...well done dear, what are we having for dinner?

The Addicted Genealogist
 – George G. Morgan

:
:
In one of my presentations I told the group that “I am a rabid genealogist.” I also told the attendees that genealogy is an addiction, except there are no needle marks or other physical problems. In "Along Those Lines . . ." this week, I want to test you to see how many of the traits of an addicted genealogist you can identify as your own. Be honest with yourself!

Test Yourself
Answer these twenty-five questions with a “yes” or a “no” and then rate yourself with the results at the end of the column.

Do you feel that you know many of your ancestors better than members of your immediate, living family members?
Do most or all of your vacation trips involve genealogical research, even at the risk of traveling hundreds of miles out of the way?
Have you ever dragged your spouse and/or children through a cemetery?
On such vacation trips, have you “dumped” your spouse and/or children at a mall, given them money, and told them to amuse themselves for four or five hours while you conduct research?
Are you on a first name basis with more than five genealogical reference librarians?
Are you more proficient with searching library and archive catalogs and the Internet for genealogical information than most of your local librarians?
Have you ever bribed (or thanked) a genealogy librarian or archivist with chocolate chip cookies, cheesecake, bon-bons, or Godiva chocolates?
Have you ever sat at a microfilm reader so long that your eyes were spinning in their sockets like the fruits on a Las Vegas slot machine?
Have you ever bypassed eating lunch or dinner just because you were making such headway, either in a library/archive or on the Internet?
Does the trunk of your car contain hiking boots, galoshes, coveralls, smocks, old shirts and trousers, insect repellent, a trowel, and other tools just in case you have to make an emergency stop at a cemetery?
Do you subscribe to more than five genealogical mailing lists or regularly post to and check more than five online genealogy message boards?
Have you spent $100 or more in the last year on genealogy books, software, and/or archival supplies?
Have you spent $100 or more in the last year on photocopies and/or for copies of vital records?
Have you called in sick to work or school because you were up until the wee hours researching your genealogy in the Ancestry.com databases and on other websites?
When you make a great discovery, do you turn around and celebrate it by telling your dog(s) or cat(s) napping in your home office all about it?
Are you the person in the family that everyone comes to in order to find out more about the family history?
Are you the “accidental archivist” to whom everyone gives or bequeaths the family papers, Bibles, and other heirlooms?
Are you a member of more than three genealogical societies?
Have you attended more than three seminars or conferences in the last year?
Are you able to immediately recall the names, the locations, and the vital dates of two or more generations of a family line and to brag to another researcher exactly how far back, to the year, you have traced your most distant line?
Is at least one room in your home unusable because your genealogical research paperwork covers every surface?
Do you attend family reunions to pick your relatives' brains and to find a younger relative who might become addicted and to whom you could bequeath your research?
Does your car, truck, van, or SUV have a bumper sticker, license plate holder, or window decal relating to genealogy?
Do you call relatives primarily for the reason of learning more about the family history rather than to find out how they are doing?
Have you personally researched in the basement or attic of a courthouse or church for family records?

He goes on to say:

Rating Your Addiction

Pretty tough questions, eh? Well, go back and count your “yes” answers and match the number of them with the list below.

1-5: You're still a beginner and have a lot to learn, but there's hope. Join a genealogical society ASAP.

6-10: You qualify to list genealogy as a hobby. You can work up to the next level by spending more time at the library or at an LDS Family History Center.

11-15: You're a dedicated researcher but you haven't thrown your heart into it. You have to give up those frivolous social events and PTA meetings and concentrate more fully on genealogy.

16-20: You are definitely hooked, but you may still have some modicum of personal and social life.

21-25: You are definitely addicted and there is little hope for you. You could attend GA (Genealogists Anonymous) meetings, and it probably still wouldn't help. Give in to it, relax, and have a wonderful time!

We Have No Shame!
Now that you've answered—honestly--all the questions, be aware that there is no shame in being an addicted genealogist. It's an honorable and, yes, even respectable kind of addiction.

If you registered a mere 1-5, 6-10, or 11-15, we are confident that you will soon join our addicted masses. Keep up the good work, and...

Happy Hunting!
George

I like his comment on 11-15:
You have to give up those frivolous social events and PTA meetings and concentrate more fully on genealogy.   ;D

You know you are addicted when you read the birth/marriages/death notices in the area of research and wonder if any corresponding names are related to you.
You know you are addicted when after years of trying to interest other members of the family to no avail, one of your children suddenly says something like 'Mum, what did my gt grandfather do for a living?' You rush to your computer and print off all the details glad that they are at last showing some interest.
You know you are addicted when a relie dies and you are invited to choose a bit of furniture and you opt for articles of clothing, old photos and household bills.
You know you are addicted when you pass up an evening out to sit in front of the computer.

Gee, Lydart, there were Pomeroys in Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada (place names:  Pomeroy Ridge & Pomeroy Bridge).    And since they were in Charlotte County, they were probably across the river in Calais, Maine, as well.  Maybe you could start doing worldwide one-name studies (after you've traced the last of your lines back).

As for the addiction to genealogy:  guilty as charged.  I'm so glad to see that I'm not the only one!

You know your addicted to genealogy, when you ask people  if they know where their ancestors are born.

And when your 9 year old tells everyone who listens that their mum's  job is finding dead people

Heres another one.

When you hear someones surname that is a bit different,
you think to yourself, that would be interesting to search for/or
if they had a common name/think to yourself again/
wouldn't like that one.

I think I'm getting ATG really bad,
must go to the Doc,s,
now he really does have an unusual surname.!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I'm getting ATG really bad,
must go to the Doc,s,
now he really does have an unusual surname.!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't for obvious reasons, mention the names of the doc's in our local practice ... but of one of them, it is often said 'His bedside manner ?  No, its awful  ... more of a good grave-side manner ...'

Graves ... Now I wonder .... is he into genealogy ??

Gee, Lydart, there were Pomeroys in Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada (place names:  Pomeroy Ridge & Pomeroy Bridge).    And since they were in Charlotte County, they were probably across the river in Calais, Maine, as well.  Maybe you could start doing worldwide one-name studies (after you've traced the last of your lines back).

Don't think I haven't thought of it ... but its been done !

I know I am as now I get a scratch card every so often and if I win I save the money to pay for certs etc

Today I cashed in £28.00 worth and then bought another 3 and won £23.00 again. Good way to save a bit but I suppose if I count up the losses they would far outweigh the wins lol

How we love gravestone and wills, my wife finds it macabre.

I was over the moon where the brother of my ancestor left a will, (in addition to tantalising clues to the origins of the family)  wanted to specify that the bearers at his funeral were to have black silk hats, scarves, and gloves, one of the bearers was to wait behind and see his grave was filled in, and he was to have a funeral sermon preached the following Sunday

I absolutely LOVED this - a warning from an Uncle to his nephew written as the preface to a family history he'd written:

Quote

My dear William:

At the present lustrum of your life you are, and should be, supremely indifferent to your ancestors. They are dead and gone and that's an end on't. Your utmost powers of receptivity are properly absorbed by vital considerations. "Dead uns are nit"—as you would put it. In presenting you the following notes I ask not that you consciously attempt to change your present attitude. Inevitably there will come a time when these records of your forebears will have for you at least a passing interest. To you at that time I dedicate them. I hope, indeed, the time will never come when the pulse of glorious life will beat so slowly that you can afford to devote it to genealogical study. A lonely and a sterile life alone can find sufficient satisfaction in the dry-as-dust occupation of delving into dreary records to find a name, a mere name, the date when the name was born and died, the date when the name married another name, and the dates of all the other names that went before and came after.

Hoping to save you from so deplorable an expenditure of vitality, I, not inappropriately, present to you the names of many of the men and women who are responsible for your existence.

Wise words, indeed!

Paul

Title: The Dedication Of a True Genealogist
Post by: bigmagicdog on Tuesday 15 July 08 12:59 BST (UK)
From my website:

You know when you're an addicted genealogist...

When you brake for libraries.

When you get locked in the library overnight and you never even notice.

When you hyperventilate at the sight of an old cemetery.

If you'd rather browse in a cemetery than a shopping centre.

When you think every home should have a microfilm reader.

If you'd rather read census schedules than a good book.

When you know the town clerk in every county by name.

If town clerks lock the door when they see you coming.

When you're more interested in what happened in 1797 than 1997.

If you store your clothing under the bed and your closet is carefully stacked with notebooks and journals.

If you can pinpoint Kirkcaldy and Inverness on a map but you're still not sure if Whitehorse is in the Yukon or Washington in DC.

When all your correspondence begins "Dear Cousin".

If you've traced your ancestral lines back to Adam and Eve, have it fully documented, and still don't want to quit.

Stop to look at gravestones even when you don't have any relatives buried in the graveyard.
Read the obituaries and get excited when you recognize a person's name.
Go through the telephone book looking for your surname when on holiday (even in foreign countries where you have no relatives).

I can relate to a lot of the same....
But what about when you hear someone's surname, do you ever wonder about the origins of the name? I do it all the time; my ears prick up if it's a name I've seen in records before. I sometimes wonder if that person's ancestors knew mine.
Oh yes, I'm addicted alright!

I can relate to most of the above, my partner works back-shifts at the weekends so I'm up long before him and off out......he always manages to find me when he gets up though - in the huge Tomnahurich Cemetery.  ;)

You know you're addicted to Genealogy when.........You're speaking to offspring number 5 and call him by his 4 siblings names then the dogs name before you finally manage to hit on the correct one...........but you can reel off all your descendants names back to the early 1800's, their spouses names, their offspring's names, their parents names and all their aunties and uncles names - without pausing for breath!  ;D

Hi,
I have been doing my searching for 18years...But I knew I
was addicted when..... ;D
I live in the USA and only 340 miles to the Big Salt Lake
Family History CenterLDS....
Well I was doing research there and I found my first
Death Record..My gggram...I just cried out loud. :'(..I ran to the information Counter where my mother was asking a question about maps ...She looked at me and the gentleman also looked at me crying ..and mom said " Whats the Matter"
I responded to her saying " Grandma Jane is dead" ...my mother looked at me and kind of laughed and the man said
"I'm sorry to hear that is there someone you need to call"?
Mom not hearing him said to me also " Well of coarse shes
dead honey that was over a hundred and fifty years ago"
The man just bursted out laughing.. :D..realizing what I was
saying ( a past death not a present death) ....and told me
"Its ok your not the first one to do that or the last."
I felt kind of foolish but they are living today with you is the
way i feel...So I love them as I find they as they are part of me....Happy Hunting to all.. :).Crookedtail

Oh lol Barbara,

that happened to me last week when the doc asked if there was any xxxxxx in the family. He probably wondered why I was smiling to such a grave question.  How do you say that you can happily report no back to at least 1837 :D

On the plus side - my mums family doctor is very interested in the history of the village and spent an extra 2 hours listening to me going off about how long the family had lived there blah, blah, blah....  So that was 5 minutes giving mum a check over and 2 hours talking local history  ;D

Hi

Its great when you are not the only one at work who is interested in their ancestors.  When I had my appraisal earlier this year, we spent two minutes discussing my job and ten minutes discussing why my boss couldn't find her GGG grandmother on a census  ;D

I also have a confession.  When my aunty died earlier this year, I had a pencil and paper discreetly tucked away in my handbag so I could write down any bits of information I heard (after the funeral I may add).

And I did find out some things, although to hide what I was doing I did "go" to the toilet a lot to scribble it all down  ;D

Similar thing happened to Me the other day, when I asked My Doc for some notes out of My Medical File! ::) ;)

She asked 'What Kind of Notes'?

I told Her I was trying to complete a Decendants Chart with Known Medical Ailments (instead of BDM's), & had done it back to @1850 but had just realised I had'nt listed My Own & wanted to add My Own notes back to at least when I was 10Yrs old (when I was knockdown by a Car & spent 5 days in a Coma) :-[

You are seriously addicted pegasus.  :o Do you think it's time to seek medical help? .... Oh! I see you already did. :)

My main symptom right now is reading names off the sides of lorries on the motorway and wondering if I have any of them in my tree and getting quite excited when both name and county matches. :)

Also laughed about asking doctor for medical details. A few years ago our G.P. came to the door on a Sunday afternoon to ask if I knew how my husband's family and his were connected (quite far back is the answer) but he pulled out his notes and read them off- little bits of crossed out prescription pads with details he asked my husband's aunt years ago!

I know I am addicted for several reasons 1) more interested in family research than research for my Degree 2) if I spend more than two minutes away from my laptop I have to check my email as soon as i get back to it incase some long lost relative has contacted me via ancestry or some helpful person on here has found info on what feels like my 100th request! 3) you persuade yourself to pay the £23 for a cert just to have it a few days early! 4) you've forgotten you ever had friends and have just replaced them with dead ancestors! 5) Start researching other peoples trees just to get the hit because my own trees have a lot of brick walls which 6) sends you into a mini depression!

The list goes on...but i have to check my mail lol

Sarah

P.s. i also know i am addicted because i read all 10 pages of other peoples why i am addicted, and got excited when i read someone was buying a microfiche reader which gave me an idea! And when you have asked your relatives to buy you parish records for your birthday and christmas presents!

I order death certs for all my direct ancestors—but only because I want to avoid their pitfalls.  My maternal g grandfather died of a fractured skull caused by falling down stairs while intoxicated.  I’ve avoided that particular fate by living in a one story house! ;)

I have a ggg uncle on my paternal side who also died after falling down stairs.

When I was in Yorkminster in September (before I knew that I had both maternal and paternal ancestors who had died from falling down stairs) I climbed all 200 and something steps to the top of the tower.  As I was coming back down the steps I had a sudden overwhelming terror of falling—and I’m now wondering if my ancestors were sending me a warning!?

Last year the wife and I went to Studley specifically to go round a cemetry where some of her ancestors are buried.

This year we went to Bantry, County Cork, where her dad was from and spent about an hour going round the cemetry there, photographing all the tombstones with O'Mahony or O'Leary on them. Now I have to work out which ones are relatives.

i think some of my most surprising finds have been wandering around cemetries, recently found an uncle his parents and grandparents and an assortment of family burried in a very small country cemetery, it answered alot of questions.

Stopped counting while reading the original list of "are you addicted"!
ABSOLUTELY
I can honestly say at this stage it is a complusion
When someone mentions something that triggers a thought I am off with a change of tack to see if it will tie up loose ends!
Can't believe:
how many "porkie pies" I have caught out!
how relatives used to age between census - in each 10 years some didn't age at all and some aged nearly twenty years!
how some people just were wiped from this earth and only found again by accident, but finding them confirms why other people were named as they were
not to mention that since starting here looking up other families totally unrelated - I find it a release from my own, old familiar names

;D ;D I must be addicted if my release is looking up other people's families!!!!! ;D ;D

I have become so addicted that I even want to access electoral registers for ancestors. My 2xgreat grandfather died in 1927 and his last address was a terraced street in the middle of Oxford. He was 75 and it looks like he was living with his son. I am desperate to know how long he lived there before he died.

And then finding the date of death of my ancestor who emigrated.

I'm not addicted...well there was the time when I was at my great aunt's house, and while she was in the kitchen getting tea and biscuits, I took a quick tour of the sitting room, pulled out my camera and took photos of the old pictures on her wall. As I saw the tea tray came around the corner, I just had time to slip the camera back in my pocket. Not that's she'd have minded I was taking pictures, I was just too embarrassed - I saw her start to roll her eyes at about the fifteenth question I asked her.

And then there was the time when we were driving through the village where my granddad's parents came from...I had my eyes peeled for anything to do with the name Frecknall. Just as we were going around the corner I saw a sign that I thought said "Frecknall Close". So to everybody's annoyance we turned around and went back. You can't imagine my disappointment when I saw the sign actually said "Foxhall Close".

When I go to the UK in August the top thing on my list is "Trip to Nottingham Archives" then churchyards. And visits to family and friends are arranged around that. What would they say if dead people were higher up on the list than them??

Ok, I'm addicted. I suppose it's good to come to terms with this sort of thing.  :)

I live about 1/4 mile from an old graveyard - I pass it almost everyday walking from the shops.

I always look at it longingly, wishing I had some ancestors there (instead of in inaccessible places miles from where i live!).
Mustn't moan - quite a lot are buried in various Dublin and Wicklow graveyards - it's the others!

Yes it was and yes they are!!
People used to think I was morbid bringing my children to graveyards
It helped them with:
Map reading- obviously
History - again a bit obvious
Geography - finding their location!!
Maths - if that grave is ref# A56 242 how far to A56 263 or calculating ages
English - where old english was used and explanations of changes in letters and usage
Civics - through general respect of the property
and this is long before you find the long lost dead relative that teaches the Realism of death being a part of life!!

or maybe this was me trying to justify my addiction!

You are absolutely right on every point. Children learn so much by being part of a hunt. They have since man discovered Savannah.

However, we may both be deluding ourselves. :)

Some of our family outings consisted of loading children, camera, maps into the car (never let the children know where you are going, or there will be a fight).  Once we arrive at the cemetery there is normally a groan.  I make it a game, who can find the most headstones?  Amazing how quickly they can be found by children who just want to get out of there.

Just talking to the hubby a couple of nights back saying how wonderful it would be to go back to England and hunt down a few long lost relations.  His reply was not one of great delight :-X.  He made a comment about how we would end in cemeteries and record offices for hours on end, let alone me talking to people.
So a trip from New Zealand to England would cost us a fortune, this would be my overdose of the family history addiction if I had my way.

a little off addiction topic but Heitch..

My little boy when he was about 7 was asked if he was sad surrounded by dead people by a stranger in a cemetery (an older lady who obviously thought I shouldn't have my kids there and was going to show me why!) He looked at her really intently and told her that there were no people there!! She looked amazed and he continued as if she was ignorant of the fact and told her that they were all happy in heaven only their bones were left under the ground and that was why we couldn't build houses there!!!

Reminds me of my late father.  He would always look in churchyards, (as I do and did even as a child)  and if he saw a child's grave (as you can imagine there were many, especially in the old village churchyards), he would bow his head and say a prayer.  We lived near such a graveyard and he found a grave of a child called John.  We had no idea who this child was, but every time dad came to visit, he would go to the churchyard to see John, to say hello and say a prayer for him.

I inadvertently named him after the patron saint of speakers and his patron has endowed him well!

Travellng by air last year just as we approach the baggage check he asked me in a very loud voice did I have to tell the people I had heroin in my bag!! I had ANADIN!! very red faced and more loudly I told him so and took it out to show the security guard who was struggling to keep a straight face!! That was his story of the day if not the week!

Sometimes I  wonder which ancestor gave him his sense of humour

Dad & I have been taking photos of the ones in the local Cemeteries around Manchester for various people.

A few weeks ago we went on our 'family week' holiday with all the family to Anglsey .............. driving along a country lane we spotted a small Cemetery, and a very clearly visible War Grave in it ............. dads reaction? "I wonder if anyones photographed the war graves in this area" - I think we got him addicted!

When I was in school we were taught a whole subject called CIVICS and it was the study of the rights and duties of citizens.
You were taught about governement, politics, voting, civil duty, economics, banking, international issues and culture, etc. I don't know if there is a comparable subject today (and I'm not dramtically old!!)

It's not, but that's the age it starts at (understanding your local community, being a responsible citizen) and the subject is called the same at 16 but obviously includes more about government, international issues, etc etc).

Must say that the British floor is not as busy as the other floors so have no problem getting a film reader or computer...

Hello:

It seems a long time but we drive from home to Missoula (first day) that is 6 hours then the next day to Pocatello Idaho that is another 6 hour drive and the next morning we drive into Salt Lake with is only a 2 -3 hour drive so really is not that bad. Like I said before we like to take our time and do some shopping along the way.

I have driven it in one day with two of us doing the driving, We would change drivers every two hours. I would not do that again. That was a bit much.

I think they have a different mindset in USA.  I recently received an e-mail from someone in USA who berated me because I didn't just get in my car in Hampshire and drive to Cheshire to look at a graveyard.  She said she travels all over USA visiting relatives, flying everywhere. (I must say she did have a very odd attitude, rather boastful about all her different houses around USA). Well if I could fly from Hampshire to Cheshire, cheaply and easily I might do the same.  Flying Heathrow (or Bournemouth) to Manchester and then getting a train, bus or taxi to the area of Cheshire I want, just to look at a graveyard, and then returning does not seem much fun to me.

Lizzie

ps.  My husband and I have already searched said graveyard when we were up there a couple of years ago.

I think the mindset is that they judge everyone doing the same thing as they are (family history research) as being in the same economic bracket as they are; it doesn't always apply. Many Americans would love to come to England, or visit LDS in Utah, but are unable to financially. However, it is true to say that air travel has largely replaced rail for long distance treavel in the USA. I still regard up to a total of 12 hours travel as acceptable for a day's research. When I lived at Doncaster I could just get to Wiltshire RO and back in a day, and have sufficient time there to be useful. I couldn't quite manage Dorset, I could make the round trip, but only had 50 minutes research time and that was on paper. However, Taunton at 4 1/2 hours out and 4 hours back was a regular trip.

I do go to the closet family history center to me and that is an 1  1/2 hour drive so when I go I go down for the full day.  But must say that driving in Canada is a bit easier than in the UK.  I can drive to Cranbrook ( where the center is) and some times I am lucky if I see a dozen cars on the road. And over here you can drive for miles and see no towns or houses etc.  Just driving through the mountains.  I must say that the highways are much busier in the summer time.

We could fly to Salt Lake but it is much cheaper to drive down there.  Also if you stay at the hotel next to the library you get cheaper rooms if you are there to do family history... Not sure if any of the hotels near by do the same thing.  We stay at the Salt lake Plaza as it is right next door to the library so if you want a break from researching then you just have to nip next door.  Not that I rest much when I am there. lol...

Cheers

We moved south, one of the attractions was that I thought my research in Lincs and Yorks was effectively completed, and that archives I needed would be more readily accessible. What happened; more research to do in the above, new research to do in Cambridgeshire, Wiltshire moved archive from Trowbridge to Chippenham, Taunton difficult to reach by rail and the relocation won't help, however, on the positive side Dorchester is 45 minutes away, was impossible; Winchester one hour, and right outside station, Chippenham 1 hour quicker than it was, Kew one hour quicker, other London archives little changed, so on the whole I think I have improved my access times to the archives I need.

- Bouncing off the walls when finding new family members.

Hail and well met Darren!

Like so many others have said - opening my email in the morning - see what's come in from the Northen Hemisphere!

Reading all the unread posts titles in here in case I see one of interest that may be a family of mine, or maybe something I could respond to for someone outside my own interests.

Doing the same searches almost every day for my brick wall people- ummm well, there might have been some new ones released overnight!

Very early in my research days, I must have been dreaming about my great grandparents.  My gggfather was a coal miner (as was my grandfather) and my grandmother had told me as a child, how her father had to get up for a first shift at about 4.30 am, and walk to the mine which took him about 1/2 - 3/4 of an hour.

His breakfast was porridge which would have been sitting at the side of the coal range all night, and my great grandmother would get up first to make up his piece box (lunch).

I woke up one morning, and because it was daylight, I panicked, and jumped out of bed to get his breakfast porridge and pack his Piece.  (Lunch box).

It wasn't until I actually got out to the kitchen that I realised I must have been dreaming I was my great Grandmother!  It was very spooky, and I often have a laugh about it!

Looking at charts and graphs at work and for a second thinking they are a census form.
Checking Ancestry, FindMyPast and FamilySearch daily for new records.
Writing up biographies on ancestors and printing them off in book form.
My CD collection is 70% consisted of marriage records, census CDs and poor law records.
Making sure that while 100% proof can be hard to achieve, 99.9% proof is always achieved.
Getting excited when finding a new link and being unable to sleep that night.
Dreaming that my 4xgreat grandfather is still alive at 225 years old.

And that pop in to the record office turns into 3 days of the holiday in the record office. My next holiday will be Oxford and Pittsburgh.

Also, making sure you check all opening hours of record offices and taking any ID in case you may need a readers card, ready for the trip. And on the trip you make sure your alarm is set for early in the morning to get down the RO as early as possible.

When you watch old episodes of soaps like Corrie, EastEnders or Home And Away and find characters with surnames that are of ancestors and even think in the fictional world they are distant relatives. Ie Alf Stewart of H&A may be a distant cousin of mine through my Stewarts of Scotland lol. Or the fact that the Branning family in EastEnders have a Suffolk surname.

You have a 5000 page portfolio of BMD certs, poor law records, parish records, census records and emigration records.

You spend hours looking through online poor law records on Ancestry in the hope you may find an entry for an ancestor.

When I am logged on to Ancestry my husband refuses to answer me when I speak unless I say his name because he says he is not sure if I am speaking to HIM, THE DOG OR THE ANCESTORS  ::)

Well no prizes for guessing the answer to that one - I am an addict who talks out loud.

A Holiday later on this year will be a week spent in a Scottish Coastal area where lots of my ancestors lived (we live in Scotland so no problem) and he will have the dog for company and
they can go for long walks on the beach :-* :-* Hope its not raining or they will get very wet :'(

Selfish? Who me  :)

Dorrie

P.S. Love them really

Just read this on. my Heritage blog....

You know you've  been hit with the genealogy bug if…

When introducing someone you say, “this is my sister’s grandmother’s father’s son.”
You are more interested in what happened in 1815 than in 2015.
A perfect vacation includes trips to cemeteries, archives and libraries.
A family vacation is going to visit an ancestor’s hometown.
Your doctor asks about your family background and you reply, “how many generations back?”
Many family albums are filled with photos of ancestors.
You explore unusual, non-related family names for fun, as well as your own family names.
You know more about your ancestors than your oldest relatives who knew them.
You thrive on finding an old family heirloom and learning about its history.
If you could have any tech gadget, it would be a time machine to go back and meet your ancestors.
You’ve called in sick because you woke up late after a research all-nighter .
You filed your taxes in GEDCOM format.
You named your kids in alphabetical order to make indexing easier.
Do you have any others to add?

You refuse to accept that brickwall is indestructible
You take pictures of headstones...just in case and anyway someone may want a copy.
You cant walk past a Memorial or Plaque without going over the names for links

I showed my doctor death certificates.  When he read them he just nodded and then looked at my grandmothers doctor and said show this to my wife (reception), she worked for him.  Wife's comment was ' oh he was a grumpy old B.'

Added.

When the crossword puzzle clue is 'resting places' you think of cemeteries, grave, tomb, then find out the first letter is B and the answer is beds.

Watching TV shows and characters with surnames that are of ancestors. Tom Barnaby in Midsomer Murders for instance, his surname is very common in the Yarmouth area of Norfolk, maybe his ancestors came from there. And a distant relative of mine married a Barnaby in Yarmouth. I could say Tom and John Barnaby in MM are distant cousins of mine lol.

75% of your CD collection is of marriage records, poor law records, census records, parish registers and electoral registers.

Looking at paperwork at work and thinking it is a census form or birth certificate.

Filling in the 2011 census and omitting my middle name, so my descendents dont have it easy 100 or so years down the line.

Why should they have it easy after all our hard work trawling through reams of parish registers, census records and such.

More addictions is researching the areas my ancestors lived in, even where they may have drunk or shopped. Even to researching neighbours of ancestors, sometimes they registered and ancestors death.

When you sit up in bed half the night with your ipad because you live in Tomorrowland and the Rootschat boards come to life when you should be sleeping!  Well, somebody might have answered one of your posts while you were sleeping, and you better have one more check  - just in case it's that miracle find!

And you know you've spent all night at it when you hear birds chirping in the tree outside your bedroom window!

You get up at 7am in the morning on holiday in London, Essex or Sussex so you can get to the record office as early as possible, leaving other relatives having to please themselves, then getting an ear bashing when you come back to the hotel at 8pm to be told "You spend all holiday researching dead people when we could have had a lovely day on the seafront". What getting into a big sweat and always wanting a drink?

You know you've  been hit with the genealogy bug if…

You explore unusual, non-related family names for fun, as well as your own family names.

You know you are addicted when after reading too many Harry Potter FAN FIC stories, you start looking through census records for the surname of Greengrass. (after the fictional character of Daphne Greengrass - it is an unusual name).

For the Record - The Greengrass name is found pretty much totally in Norfolk and Suffolk.

Lots of Shippers write FANFIC stories where Harry Potter and Daphne Greengrass get together instead of Hermione or Ginny  :)

I never had any interest in going to graveyards and trying to read headstones. I have never needed to do that!!

Not since 1999 when my parents home city in New Zealand placed all their burial records online and I only need to type in the name and the dates and I get ALL the details on my screen!!! That has been a GODSEND. Now I use that information in place of death certificates. LOL

The NZ BMD online database is very good as well!!!!

Obsessed with genealogy is finding a character in Emmerdale Farm from years ago who was a Yorkshireman, Tom Merrick, having a Shropshire and Staffordshire surname and even researching Merricks in Yorkshire in 1861, and most of them were from Shropshire, Oxfordshire or London.

And yes, even researching surnames of Harry Potter characters or surnames like Trotter for Only Fools And Horses.

Its a scary/odd feeling as you wander the bookstore with your head tilted to read the authors names and suddenly your own appears. You then have a brain freeze as you wonder if you DID write it but just forgot. Then pick up the book and its a good read.

I actually did try and trace his family back from Canada to see if there was the Bedford or Leicestershire link but haven't followed it up as much as I should.

Especially when you see it in Russian, in a Moscow shop window

And especially, when you are asked in a pub whether you are that author, before they even know your name (which actually isn't that flattering as I am about 15 years younger)

... When you travel halfway across the world to visit the graves of your great grandparents, and birthplaces of your parents, houses they lived in etc, - then stand and cry when you actually find them! You take headstone photos of any headstone in that same cemetery that has one of your connected names on it, even though a connection hasn't yet been made to that particular person/people!   Being a small coal mining village in Ayrshire where both my great grandparents and their parents were born and reared, it's been a very handy resource to have!

Spending days researching a family even consider buying a certificate because it might confirm your ideas, then realize that you had researched the family because a member of  the family was staying at the same abode as your family on census night ,and as far as you know there is no connection.

Oh dear, I fear I've become an addict.

Our family holiday to the Forest of Dean last autumn included visit to Gloucester Archives (husband and son despatched to cinema!).  We went on a couple of walks through villages / areas where ancestors were known to have lived, and we also spent an hour in a very overgrown graveyard, hunting down ancestors.  (With the latter, making it a competition and saying "the first person who can find me someone called **** gets a chocolate" proved a highly successful approach!). And we DID find the grave of my great-grandparents, which was wonderful.

I'm also guilty of telling my parents stories I've researched about ancestors they knew as children.

My dear maternal grandmother (b1872) was very religious and projected the epitome of Victorian morality; until I started family history research! One of her subjects was marriage outside the permitted relationships, first cousins etc. her husband came from a community which had been inbreeding for years; her oldest sister married in the mid 1880s and died subquentally. Her husband remarried and was again widowed. In the late 1890s he remarried again, this time to the sister of his first wife, and was again my grandmother's brother in law. Guess what, she was a witness at the wedding!

Spending a few hours yesterday researching the exact location of a row of houses in Old Ford Road in Bow called Arthur Terrace, I think it was actually 2 blocks, one had 2 houses and the other was 3 houses on the main road, next to another terrace. Well all this research helps others who may find ancestors from the same place or Old Ford Road.

As I said, you even see your parents as ancestors and research their schools, addresses etc. I found mum had a miscarriage before me and my brother was born, so they could have had 3 children.

Parents moved to G Yarmouth in Norfolk in 1975 and I even research their first address in the town there. I wish I could find them on the 1971 and 1981 census but will have to wait until 2071 and 2081.

Yes there is that. For the house they settled in Rollesby and even their first address but they only lived there for a few months in 1975 so may not have lived long enough at the place to qualify.

You type common surnames into Ancestry to see how many people with that surname are in each census and how many births have been registered with that name or mothers maiden name.

Over 300'000 people with the surname or mmn White were registered inbetween 1916 and 2007. Imagine trying to do a one name study on all that lot lol.

You tell family about an ancestral find like you have won £100000 and get a "Very Good" reply and thats it, no more yet still have to listen to their everyday chatter on mundane things.

You find out your ancestor or a sibling of an ancestor spent time outside Europe, and find a passenger list and act like you have won £1000000.

You spend a lot of time trying to narrow down the location of a cottage in a village your ancestor lived at, using census records and electoral rolls.

You spend all day touring villages your ancestors lived at, and looking at every name on every headstone, even the more weathered ones.

It's even worse when you start talking about these people as if you'd known them :)

I remember my cousin getting annoyed with me when she asked if I knew who lived in a nearby house and I proceeded to tell her the entire history of both the house and the family who used to live there along with their local connections, where in the churchyard they were buried, etc. but I couldn't tell her the name of the present occupants  ;D

Yesterday I went round Bletchingdon and Wootton in Oxfordshire, very hilly and picturesque and has totally changed my vision of how they lived and the location now I have been there. Oxfordshire is like a southern Lake District. In the 2 aforementioned villages I looked at every name on every headstone and when I got in the car there was grass and mud all over the mat.

Yes it is like we knew them, and 2 of them died in 1854 and 1858 respectively. Also the one who died in 1854 had a daughter in 1842, my 3xgreat grandmother.

I am addicted to genealogy when I get annoyed at totally irrelevant search results even when I type exact search on FindMyPast, Ancestry or FamilySearch. Cant remember where but someone else said they type a certain surname into newspapers on FindMyPast and get a verb. I hate that, that is sooooo annoying. I think FindMyPast seem to have remedied that a bit, the surname should be just that, not a verb esp if the surname is Childs, Waters, or Wood.

Also being disappointed, as if the world is ending when a lovely theory that you think you have an ancestors baptism is blown away by a brutal fact that there was a burial record for that person as a child, and no subsequent baptisms in that parish or further. Or you think you have an ancestors baptism in a PR only to find a marriage in the next parish 20 years later to a different spouse.

Same here. It is like the end of the world, as we are so addicted to genealogy and when we have our hopes smashed to pieces by a very inconvenient baptism. Or if you find a likely marriage because you have a baptism, you inconveniently find there was 2 "James Bradford's" who married a Susannah in the area at the same time. Police officers hate coincidences, and I dont blame them. I am a genealogist who hates loose ends.

This happens to me with the surname Revell, I know "revel" is a verb but I also get a lot of "Revelations" results. Very confusing to me how little results for the actual surname comes up.

It is annoying isn't it? They have a surname search yet get hundreds of totally irrelevant results, ie if I type "Edward Childs" I get a few exact results but buried within the endless "Edwards and child" or "Mrs Edwards and one child" results.

When i watch the news, TV shows, and see the end credits etc, and I hear peoples surname I think "Oh that is a surname found in Suffolk" or someone with an English accent whose surname is MacCullen I think, he must have Scottish ancestry.

If a crew member is called John Sheldrake I think "that is a Suffolk and Essex surname".

My late aunt always swore that the actor Robert Pine (most famous from the TV show "Chips") was a relative. My wife looks at his son Chris in movies and tells me there is a family resemblance. If, and it's a huge if, there is a connection, it's back in Devon in the 1600's. Both family lines came from in and around Exeter.

You type in recent dates on letters etc online, or write dates in and put 1816 instead of 2016, or chat about TV shows or music and the years they came out and put 1884 instead of 1984, and only realise that when you have submitted your post. Ie the Aussie soap Home and Away was first thought up in late 1984 and hit the air in Jan 1988 and on a forum about TV show pre televised histories I put 1894.

Jan :)
I'm a yes, maybe because these ancestors are in the past-and cannot hurt you like the ones today.

When you look forward to the "freebie" weekends so you can check your research (subs too costly from this side) and then spend the entire day trying to sort out one branch til you totally confuse yourself even when you write it down. :o ;D

(OH and son have cheek to interrupt to ask for food etc ::))

And that's when my wife wants to go out and buy something for the house or garden, or suggests a daytrip somewhere; and almost invariably it is those weekends that she suggests we go out for a meal. Doesn't she realize I can eat a sandwich at my laptop?  ::)  ;D ;D ;D

My thoughts exactly, whats wrong with peanut butter and jam sandwiches (about the extent of OH's culinary skills) and coffee (instant).  At least there is a cricket match tomorrow to keep them occupied. ;D ;D

You even trace family trees (well the basic info, not buy certs or anything) of TV stars or other famous people etc, if they were on WDYTYA or from biographical info on their parents online. Ie Ross Kemp, who I met once, has Norfolk parents but has a great grandad who came from London and his mum from Oxford. He was fostered to a Norwich family as he was a baseborn child. So Ross has ancestors from Cambridge's rival city like I do.

I did a family tree for a family from a BOOK (they were actual people), had it on A*** as private tree so I could do the census look-ups, and someone contacted me to ask how I was connected  :o :o :o

Nor me 😰

I also put surnames and/or place names into the wee Rootschat search box- usually only found my own posts!  😄

Have occasionally found someone researching the same family name, but usually a different branch, and nothing comes of it!
Title: Re: You know you're addicted to Genealogy when ....
Post by: pinefamily on Saturday 09 April 16 00:26 BST (UK)
I'm not even that lucky!
I'm not sure I want to find other researchers though, because I have had trouble in the past with someone who had an extensive tree with "links" to mine. However, I had looked at the original PR's and found that their link was wrong with a juvenile death. This hasn't stopped them spreading this error across the net, with others obviously copying their tree.
Title: Re: You know you're addicted to Genealogy when ....
Post by: jaybelnz on Saturday 09 April 16 00:46 BST (UK)
That's a real hard one isn't it - I suppose the only consolation is that it's not your tree they're copying!  But is still very annoying when you see something in print about your family that you know is absolutely not correct, and you the have documentation to prove it!

I got really annoyed about one like that, until I realised that I had in earlier years, been convinced that I was on the right trail with that same person.  It wasn't until more experience and further research gave me more evidence on that family, that I changed tack!

Isn't it amazing though how one little something passed down, or a wrong entry taken as gospel by another, can really mess things up!

Title: Re: You know you're addicted to Genealogy when ....
Post by: pinefamily on Saturday 09 April 16 01:45 BST (UK)
And this one wasn't even part of the green leaf brigade, at least not to start with. I see plenty of trees on Ancestry now that have the same mistake. I am confident in my findings, but if I were ever proven wrong with this, or any other piece of research, I am big enough to admit it.

So true, guilty as charged....... ::) ::) ;D ;D

It is easy to follow a wrong lead, especially with similar names and surnames and childrens names popping up.  The same family can have parents and children that seem to "fit".  Check and double check don't just accept  ;D ;D

You get a car insurance renewal form through the post and find that is second best and much less important to a birth cert you are anxiously awaiting for.

You get annoyed intensely by glaring errors in Anc trees. People born to parents who totally different surnames and maiden names, or to parents who died 100 years before.

You type in a surname into a new search database for a certain surname and only get results from a family of that surname you have come across many times before and have no known connection to.

I Googled addiction and found-

"Addiction is a condition that results when a person ingests a substance (e.g., alcohol, cocaine, nicotine) or engages in an activity (e.g., gambling, sex, shopping) that can be pleasurable but the continued use/act of which becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary life responsibilities, such as work, ..."

As I do not ingest genealogy I can rule that part out which just leaves the "engages in..."

Now as I have never know life without family history (it formed part of my education and development as an infant) it cannot interfer with ordinary life, therefore I can confidentially state I am not addicted to genealogy it is simply part of my ordinary life and responsibilities.

Thought I would add a few more symptoms of "Genealogyitus".

You see a surname of a news reporter on TV or someone being interviewed and the surname sounds like a surname you are researching and think "You have just given me another spelling variant I had not though of before".

On trips out when doing the travelling you think "What registration district am I in now"?

At a RO you make the archivist break out in a sweat with endless requests for original documents.

You research the dead, and forget the living. And get demands from family saying "Where is my cup of tea"? You feel like jokingly saying "I have ancestors to research".

Well, I just look on it as my having a back-up if their computer fails  ;D  I have no intention whatsoever to offer that information to others.  The missionary files are shared with my friend in South Africa (she paid), the wills were obtained at my local records office for a lady who paid for my photographic licence - there is no way that I would share that information with others.

I only scored 3 on original list (although photos on my phone may cover the wallet one), would e an extra one but don't get a lunch break. But yes, yes, yes and yes to your list.  I also work with the public and when I see names I'm either "oh I wonder if they're related" or "oh wonder where that name comes from".  Internally in my head, I don't pester them or ever say out loud.

I would disagree with that on the basis that it is ONLY addictions which are frowned upon such as Drugs, Alcohol, Cigs etc. where people would deny it although know within themselves they are addicted.

I'm addicted to Genealogy but I know it won't put Joe Soap off me so yes I admit it but others with addictions such as Drugs would not admit it for fear of being treated differently or even ignored.

You know your addicted when you come across someone with an accent from the area of your ancestors....ask them if that's a Newcastle (or whatever area) accent & when they say "yes"...you proceed to ask them if their surname is "whatever the surname is you're researching" & if they say "NO"...you ask if they know anyone by that surname in that area  ;D.........

This happened to me years ago, with the man sitting next to me on a bus in Dublin, each time this man heard an accent from Kildare he asked the person if they knew where Blacktrench was, not only did I know the place he was trying to find but we were related, I got his address and sent him the details my mother supplied. Sadly I left his address in my wallet which was pinched a few months later, he had replied but hadn't put his address on the letter.

Again, feeling like your life is over when you are back to square one after finding a very inconvenient burial or marriage of someone who you thought was an ancestor. You think he must be your rellie as he did not marry in the parish of baptism. You then hear alarm bells ringing when you find a marriage to a different spouse in another parish in the county, which is not your ancestral parish, and worry, you Google the parish, hoping it is the opposite end of the county but no, it is a neighbouring parish. Lt Joe Kenda, a American former cop says he hates coincidences. I so do as well, they do happen I know but they are so annoying. Kenda says he will not stop until a case is solved, and he must have the same mind as me, just mine is genealogy.

You know you're addicted to genealogy when the purpose of your visit to Cambridge is NOT to admire the colleges and their beautiful gardens, or to take a trip along the Backs or up to Grantchester through the meadows, but to climb Castle Hill ... and your reason for climbing Castle Hill is not to survey the vista of the city from the ancient Norman castle mound, but to descend into a cellar and pore over ancient, dusty tomes ...

Well, work it out quick, while she's still alive.

Sir Donald Sinden was undoubtedly a reasonably close relative of mine (no more than fifth cousins, but probable a bit closer with a remove or two) ... but he went and died before I could tie it down exactly, didn't he!! Don't let Babs do the same to you.

Barbara's 3rd Great Grandfather was Golding Deeks, who was born in Bures in 1806.
The family had moved to Bethnal Green before 1834, when John Golding Deeks was born.

You're looking for your 2 x g.g.aunt (who never married) on the 1891 census and find she is living with a son Edward (your 1st cousin 3 times removed) in Essex that you didn't know existed.  So you go backwards and find his baptism (in Halesworth, Suffolk) which shows a middle name obviously a surname, so you look for a man with the same name in the area they were living to see if there is anyone who could be his father (there was a single man who is a possiblity but no proof of course). You find Edward in 1851 and 1861 lodging with a family near his birth place.  In 1861 his mother was living in IOW and working for a Major in the Artillery) and you find he enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1867 aged 18.  Perhaps his mother's employer had something to do with this.

You don't find him again until 1881 when he was living in Woolwich (a sergeant in the Royal Artillery) with a wife born in Govan and a son born in Limerick in 1877.   So you look for the child's birth (your 2nd cousin twice removed) and Edward and his wife's marriage (in Limerick).  You find them again in 1891, Edward now a grocer, but there are Pension Permission/Examination records for him in 1889 (full records on Ancestry's Fold3 - no I didn't subscribed to that!).  As you can't find him in 1901 even though you've found his wife who says she's married, you look for his death which you find in 1902 - so where was he in 1901?  Then because you are still curious you look for his son in 1939 where he is living with a wife and 2 children, plus 1 redacted (these are your 3rd cousins once removed) - so what do you do next?  Yes you look for the birth of the redacted child, turns out to be a girl, so you look for her husband and then you look for her death to see if she should be unredacted.

Meanwhile on all the census from 1891 there is a child living in Edward's household who is shown as a niece aged 3,  she is still there in 1901 with Edward's wife and son aged 13 still called niece, and she is still there in 1911 with Edward's wife and son still called niece.  The interesting thing is she has as her middle name the surname of my 2 x g.g.aunt and offspring, therefore, so you decide to look for her birth on Scotlandspeople to see if there is a clue as to why she has the family surname as her middle name.  There is no reason, her father was a policeman and married her mother in Portsmouth.  The mother didn't even have the same maiden name as Edward's wife, and neither her maiden name or married name was the same, so where the "niece" relationship came from I have no idea.

Is that enough, obviously not.  In 1911 still with Edward's wife and son, there are 2 young children listed as visitors, one born in Edmonton, the other her brother born in Ipswich, Suffolk so you have to look for their births don't you?  As expected both have a - shown instead of mother's surname.  In 1911 you look for an adult with the same name as the little girl and, guess what, you find one living and working as a servant in the same area as the family is living.  So are these Edward jnr's children or just random children?  Certainly the name of the daughter and the woman with the same name, is not the same as his wife in 1939.

I'm giving up on this family now, it has got totally out of hand.  ::) ::)

ps.  Edward's son, also called Edward joined the Royal Artillery like his father but no, I haven't looked for his records.

I don't envy you researching that family (been there) with the headaches of peering/pouring over dates/ages/census' etc. with 1 of my own (eventually cracked it though)!  ;D

Surely the niece has to be a child of a sibling of Edward & possibly another you didn't/don't know about  :-\

The niece was born in Scotland in 1887 her parents Robert and Emma.  The full details are available on Scotlandspeople.  Unfortunately, Emma died in 1890 from Bronchitis, leaving Robert with two sons aged about 10 and 8 at the time.  He was a police constable but by 1891 he was working on the docks. Presumably this is why he sent his daughter to England to live with her aunt as he wouldn't be able to look after a little girl as well as his two sons.  I can't find any connection between Robert, Emma, Edward or his wife Margaret.  Unless Margaret had been previously married and Emma and Margaret are sisters.  This still doesn't explain why the little girl had Edward's surname as her middle name.  Edward is my 1st cousin 3 times removed, so there's little point in researching further.  It's just that when I get started on something I tend to move sideways too.

You spend a whole day (today) sifting through online Co Durham records such as the online wills and FS PR's and Durham Records online. At least they are online but I do find my Durham ancestors can be elusive before the 1770s. They seemed to have common surnames like Richardson, Wilson, Forster and Hodgson as well. Yet my Stewart and Mason line can be traced to Scotland and Cumberland respectively. Only Musgrave and Lowther seem less common in my Durham lot. Wales is a place where there are less unique surnames and many seem to be Williams, Jones, Roberts etc and Co Durham seems the same with Hodgson, Wilson, Robson, Foster, Richardson.

'you live - breathe and eat - dead rellies :)

Some days I have a fantastically interesting search and others totally straight forward...
One or two of interest here and there..

I touch branches and know I shouldn't cos they are 10th cousins 20 times removed.. etc.. oh dear.....

I just research these people and do not add them to my tree.

It is great to find the names of babies that have previously just been marked in 1911 as 6 born 3 died... and it is also wonderful to put a bit of meat on the bones... Regarding No known father... some of my close cousins, will not accept that their great Gran had 4 children and no named father.. they have added different fathers.  I have their birth certs !  which I have offered or even given them a copy??? ah well..

Just the other day I found a lovely little piece in the newspapers regarding a rellie, being fined for showing a light during the blackout.. (thats meat :) :) ) it shows he was apologetic and it was of course his wifes fault.

I then found a total tragedy -- but at the same time a concerning piece regarding one of my Argyle children, who died in a playground accident - age 3 -  It seems 100's of children were allowed to play in the park and so he was too - these little vagabonds, seemingly liked to throw stones at the horses that were let out into the park !!!! and one decided to kick Thomas in the head.... So sad and silly that he was allowed out to play aged 3, no doubt he was under the 'care' of his older sibling / s of which he had many.

I could go on... I am totally addicted absolutely  -- shame on me :) !!!

Been there done that Sharon with fictional characters ancestries. Esp if played by real people.

You even envisage the ancestors of characters in EastEnders and that many of them came from East Anglia due to there being huge migration in real life to London from East Anglia. Even the Branning family seems to have a Suffolk name. And Phil Mitchell once had an old map of Suffolk on his wall and I thought he must have Suffolk ancestors. God my genealogy hobby even extending to soaps, it shows how addicted I am.

Even the name was made up. It was supposed to be Norman-French. And why did a family who had lived in Cornwall for hundreds of years call their son & heir after a Scottish county? Aunt Agatha was the family historian. She reeled off the Poldark pedigree to Demelza, accompanied by anecdotes on D's first visit to Trenwith. Agatha got her own age wrong though.

You have to tell a relative that white Americans are not an ethnicity. Hilary Clinton was on The One Show and her DNA was said to be mainly English and Welsh. A rellie said "I bet she was thinking she thought she was supposed to be an American". I told her that white Americans are European in ancestry. Elvis' dad Vernon Presley was being interviewed once in 1956 when his son was by then really famous and Vernon and was told he had an old English name and he was surprised. He said "I never heard tell of any of my kinfolk coming over from anywhere. It seems we have always been here in America" He then said "Then again the English connection must have been a long way back". Some people do forget their roots. Babs Windsor was shocked when she found a Suffolk link in her East End ancestry. London was a honeypot for tens and tens of thousands of East Anglians once.

I have to say I was surprised by just how many different places my ancestors came from.  I had known that my 2 grandfathers came from very different places before I started but I now seem to have covered most counties in Scotland and with the other half of my daughters tree a good number of English counties too.

sorry nothing to do with the "topic"

But!...someone may get a giggle

According to a report in Extra TV, genealogy experts say Donald Trump and Hillary Rodham Clinton — the front-runners for the Republican and Democratic presidential nomination — share a common ancestor from England 18 generations ago.

I would think many Americans share a common ancestor from England.

I am only interested in going back to all great great grandparents. There are only 7 great grandparents - one is unknown because of illegitimacy.

I found all birth, marriage, death info and all census entries for each. Nothing further to find methinks. All ordinary hard working families. Time to stop.

When you go with your sister and cousin to Birmingham Central Library to look at inquest papers and are virtually in tears as to what happened to your 3 x great grandparents. When you are full of rage when you read that your great great grandfather was thrown into a police cell because a policeman thought he was drunk in the street, he was not drunk he'd had a stroke. The poor mans last hours spent in a cell until they finally sent him to hospital , his pregnant wife at home...........   I wanted to shout outside ' he wasn't b****y drunk' .  Talk about stirring up emotions all these years later.

If I'd stopped at 2x great grandparents I would have missed most of  the interesting ones. My various ordinary working-class 2x GGs had: a 1st cousin who was a high-up cleric and composer whose numerous acquaintances included a duke and a famous architect; same family had titled godparents 3 generations earlier; a father who made 2 appearances before Quarter Sessions in 2 years in his youth; a bankrupt uncle, or maybe more than 1, which might explain how they became working-class; a trade-unionist father at a time when union activities could land a man in prison - he featured in 2 court cases and a report of a meeting to which a certain Karl Marx sent words of encouragement; fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers who were eligible to vote, long before the majority of their contemporaries could, even though some were working men (1780s poll-book entry for one survived); ancestors who left wills, some with inventories.
I see my ancestors as a microcosm of 400 years of British & Irish history. Events have impacted their lives from the Reformation to World War Two. Some have helped shape events. Some have been on opposing sides in conflicts, leading to repercussions for later generations.
I do, however have some not very interesting ancestors with names to match (Davies and Jones). I haven't investigated beyond 3x great-grandparents around 1800.

You go to your local city for a day shopping with rellies, and plan to separate for a few hours but rather than shop you want to go to the city record office to continue researching the ancestors from the county you live in.

My husband thinks this is just because I love it there so much but he never questions why we have to have to stop off ( for a coffee)  at a different place each time on the way ie  Wareham Dorchester Beaminster Netherby Bridport..... all places where my ancestors came from. And why I always have to have a quick look round the cemetery!!!

Is my Microfische reader obsolete? Certainly yes, but still essential, and for the same reason as my W10 computer still has a USB drive A to enable me to read ancient floppy disks. But I can't read the old 5 1/4" ones from the early days!!

But I can't read the old 5 1/4" ones from the early days!!

Some years ago at work I had a new computer for the office (for the first time without a 5¼" floppy drive), and I insisted on taking the 5¼" floppy drive out of my old computer and installing it in the new computer.

I then took all my old disks from home  into work with me and transferred everything from 5¼" to 3½" floppies.

And a few years later I had to transfer all the 3½" floppies to USB sticks when they stopped installing 3½" floppy drives !!

Watching NCIS and the main character is called Leroy Jethro Gibbs and when investigating, they find a Leroy Jethro Moore. Tony, one of Gibbs' aides says "Another Leroy Jethro. What are the odds" not knowing Gibbs was named after Moore. And watching the scene I think about my family tree and an reminded of a Jethro Wickham in my ancestor and the NCIS ep reminds me to explore that line.

When you lay in bed at night analysing strong conjecture in a family tree line. You think more clearly at that time anyway.

In family trees you will always find wrong lines more interesting than right ones but also vice versa, the right line is much more interesting than the wrong line.

Don't laugh! At the weekend I was installing Windows 10 on an elderly (2004) desktop, and decided to update the firmware in the (vain) hope of getting the 64-bit version working. The BIOS update demanded Windows XP and no newer. The microcode update was only available as an image to be written to a 1.44MB floppy. That model of desktop had never shipped with a floppy drive! I had to dig out my USB floppy - luckily still working at least half a decade after its last outing.

When lying awake, and trying to drop off to sleep, I always used to think of my 'favourite' ancestor, one of my greatx2 grandparents, who was pregnant when she married her 'gypsy' (travelling family) partner in 1865 (I imagine him as a dark handsome fellow, and he was a sailor at the time too!)

They very soon split up, she met a widower from her village, and they lived together and had a very long family, without telling anyone they weren't married......

She was quite a lady.  And used to send me off to sleep, just thinking of her.

I find myself thinking "that's an unusual surname" while watching TV, and then checking FreeBMD to find out exactly how unusual.

Often I will work out a rough tree to check where their ancestors, and thus the name, come from.

You walk though a town/city graveyard or churchyard and look at headstones, and anyone who died in, say 1845, you think "They should be on the 1841 census". Or you see a headstone for someone who died in January 1852, you think "Well they made it to the 1851 census".

I cut through the church yard today, glanced at a stone and thought, ooh they'd have been born roughly around when the second church was built and they died before this (the 3rd) one was built.

A Joel Isaacs of Great Yarmouth died in 1846 aged 98. He was buried in the Jewish Cemetery there which is a relatively long way from the town centre, just outside the old town walls. So he was born c1748. I cannot find him or his wife Rachel at all on the 1841 census. I have been past that cemetery countless times, always nice to have walked near the old man who died aged almost 100.
