On my maternal grandmother's side I have James Crookstoun (b. abt 1616) married to Margaret Wilsoun (b. abt 1616), their son Andrew Crookston married Jonet Lamb 20 Oct 1673 Linlithgow, their son William Crookston married Helen Cowan 21 Jun 1715 Carriden, their son James Crookston married  Agnes Hogg (date tba), their son Robert Crookston married Rosina Redpath 27 Dec 1799, family now moved to Tranent. Their daughter Rosie Crookston married James Anderson - my 3G Grandparents. Family then moved back to Linlithgow and their grandson George Anderson was a well-known publican and coach-hirer in Linlithgow.

Hi Flowers,

Hello to you from rainy Bo'ness, Scotland.

Great to hear from you - what is your descendant line from our common ancestors William and Helen?

Also - have you had a DNA test on Ancestry so I can look out for you?

All the best,

Nice to hear from you so quickly and yes I have had  DNA done by Ancestry.   I have a public tree Knevitt/Anderson/Boulton/Hay but am seriously thinking about a Crookston and their families as there are so many.

William Crookston and Helen Cowan are my 6 x great-grandparents.
Their son James  m Agnes Hogg
     "       "    James m Jean Hog
(This James is a brother to Joanna (Jackie) who m William Ross.   After ger death William m Janet Hogg who was a 1st cousin to Jackie)

James and Jean had Helen 1784 who married Peter Hay.   One of their sons Archibald had a daughter Alison m Edwin Boulton born in England.    Archibald and his family arrived in South Australia in 1859.   Alison was born in Newton and m Edwin in SA.    One of threir daughters Sarah m James Knevitt their son Herbert is my late father.

Hope it makes sense.   So do you have a tree on Ancestry?    Haven't worked out yet what number cousin so many times removed yet.

Makes total sense! In fact our common ancestors are James Crookston and Agnes Hogg. They are my 6th GGrandparents and your 5th GG, so by my reckoning that makes you my 6th cousin, once removed. My Ancestry profile is also Gow67. I don't see a DNA match with you but that is more than likely to be because we are very distant cousins and below the Ancestry cM threshold. I'm matching with another cousin descended from their son Robert Crookston though, albeit with only 10cM 1 seg. Are you matching with any other descendants on that line? Your Ancestry tree is very well researched I may borrow some info from it, with your permission of course?
All the best,

Was good to hear ftom you pity we don't show as DNA  matching on Ancestry sometimes I find Ancestry
matching a bit odd.   I have matches that I know are no connection.   I am in contact with a descendant of Adam Crookston who lives in New York.   There are so many Crookstons all descended from James Crookstoun and Janet Lambe.   Am definitely starting a Crookston tree.   If couse you can take from my tree only too happy to help.   Regards from a perfect Adelaide day  - Pat
Sorry meant James and Margaret Wilsone

Hi,

Curious about any information you might have in relation to Stanners. My great grandmother - Helen Fraser - was born in Edinburgh in 1886. Her birth certificate lists her as illegitimate and she appears in the 1891 census as the adopted daughter of James and Betsy Stanners (Bridgeness). Have you come across those names?

Thanks,
Kathryn

Hi Kathryn,

I'm fairly sure that in 1891 census she was with James Finlay Stanners (1836-1920) and Elisabeth Stanners (ms Downie)(1834-1907). I've seen Elisabeth called Betsy and Betty in other records.

J F Stanners is a descendant of Malcolm Stanners (b.1716) and Agnes Taylor (1722-1766).

There is a fantastic family photo of James, Betsy and their son Walter Stanners and family online that I can share with you if u send me a PM- Helen may be in it.

Is there any other info on the birth cert you can share? Frustratingly Scotlandspeople is down tonight so can't look at the official records. What was your great grandfather's name?

Hope this helps?
