Hi, I have a query and I guess advice for direction...I am researching the Arthur family that found their way to broken hill from Vic/Sa
my GGrandmother was married in 1906 Broken Hill to Ernest Homann, Grace Elizabeths Parents George Arthur and Elizabeth Mary Wilcock was married 28.5.1848 i think was S.A and moved to B.H Elizabeth died 8.6.1926 aged 71 at Broken Hill.
That is as far back as I have been able to go...so if anyone can look up Grace Elizabeths birth and place and same for her parents that would be great but here is part 2
George and Elizabeth had more sons once they got to BH...George jnr I think was born on way to BH ...but both George jnr and Alfred BOTH died in 1920...can't find a reason but the weirder part is, they are on the list for burials at Broken Hill Cemetry and REMOVED next to each. All the other Arthurs are still where they were first placed???? strange...is anyone able to shed light maybe on this and how do I go about getting photos of headstones for the family?
Any help on this would be great...no living relatives for me to ask and my father only knew of his grandmothers name and at least I have been able to find a little about this very secretive now mostly deceased family
Thanks

Cando, possibly Sapphire has missed a generation...
She has Elizabeth deceased age 71 in 1926 Broken Hill which would bring her birth to 1854/1855 which lines up with the marriage of Elizabeth Mary NICKELS/NICHOLLS who married George ARTHUR the son of George ARTHUR & Elizabeth Mary WILCOCK.

I think it is simply a matter of searching the records to find all the family. It is a good idea to purchase a few certificates along the way to validate the research.
I hope you have a good family software programme to record all the information ;D Sorry for jumping from one family to another but just recording the info as I find it :)

THANKYOU all very much...now my head is spinning with dates and districts...I KNOW that we were at Broken Hill, I KNOW they worked in the Mines...my great grandfather YES name change of HOMANN to HOMAN married Grace Elizabeth and from all recollection her mother was elizabeth Mary Wilcock/Wilcox. There was quite a number of George Arthurs and I wasn't able to find anywhere I could do a SA search of BDM online. I am NSW.
I am STILL trying to find out WHY 2 brothers would die the same year and be removed from the cemetry where first laid.
Is there a site I can view or find records for SA as I am new to it so finding sites is still a necessity for me. This is all on my Fathers Paternal side and his MATERNAL side is proving to be just as difficult and frustrating but they came from england. We know My grandmother had her first birthday on the ship but that is all and with a surname of Neighbour and Clarke...well all I can say...LOL...THIS is NOT going to defeat me heehee
But sincerely once again...THANKYOU so much...to know there IS information out there and great ppl willing to help with other ppls research is Wonderful to see...
I am on the Mid North Coast of NSW and if I am able to help with anything...pls ask

OK...printed it ALL off and is now studying it all and NOW i can see WHY I was getting it all mixed up...they are a very confusing repeating family...I vote that no person will be called the same as parents or be allowed to marry someone with the same name of parents for 10 generations...heehee
and again thankyou and any tips or sites gratefully accepted...and should I be able to look up anything for anyone...pls do ask
-
Hi Sapphire :)
I am pleased you have worked out the relationships and yes it is a bit daunting when you first start researching your family....but lots of people here more than willing to help you :)
I KNOW they worked in the Mines...my great grandfather YES name change of HOMANN to HOMAN married Grace Elizabeth and from all recollection her mother was elizabeth Mary Wilcock/Wilcox.
Grace Elizabeth's mother was Elizabeth Mary NICHOLAS. Her grandmother was Elizabeth Mary WILCOCK.
I am STILL trying to find out WHY 2 brothers would die the same year and be removed from the cemetry where first laid.
I would suggest you contact the Broken Hill Council as their url is on the Broken Hill Cemetery records page - their contact page

Is there a site I can view or find records for SA as I am new to it so finding sites is still a necessity for me.

We know My grandmother had her first birthday on the ship but that is all and with a surname of Neighbour and Clarke...well all I can say...LOL...THIS is NOT going to defeat me heehee

Cando...
I agree I do find that ppl on here are so helpful and wonderful
The other dilemia is my grandmother Louisa Neighbour born 10.2.1912 died 1972 never had a middle name confirmed...father is Thomas William Neighbour and mother is Emily CLarke she died in 1964 and Emily's father is Richard Clarke no other details for family so far..this we know...Louisa came from England and had her first birthday actually ON the ship coming over...we do NOT know the port of embarkment or name of ship. Cannot find birth record of her in either england or australia...but I admit I ame new to all this so maybe I just haven't looked in the right place.
The story goes that they were booked on a ship and Emily's mother protested too much as she said ship was going to sink and story says it did. They booked onto the next ship after that and come to australia. Do not even know which state they arrived. I just wish my family talked more
Thanks again all u lovely ladies for ur help and guidance

Hello ladies,
Now that I have read this and taken it in and have stopped crying...forwhatever reason that reading it confirmed of Louisa coming over and a ship etc seemed to have gotten to me. I was very close to her before her death and this yr i got to witness the burial of the last surviving memeber for her (again she was my great aunt but she was our adoptive grandmother) and no even she didn't know where in england they were from. It is puzzling as to not know ur parents details is beyond me.
I was able to search the census in australia today at the library and got the info about Stanley and where in australia they lived etc...there are no certificates no memorablia nothing of these ppl. Sad
This has been a wonderful gift you ladies have given me today and yesterday. As it was my grandfathers birthday yesterday, so it has been wonderful timing.
But yes...some purchasing of certs etc is now in order. THANKYOU with all of my heart

Sue there is a cheaper option to purchasing certified certificates in NSW and that is to use a transcription agent. The transcriptions are emailed to you.

I have found an Emily CLARKE with father Richard CLARKE on the 1901 census - can't find them on the 1891 census and will type it up later....must prepare the evening meal. Emily's and Thomas's marriage cert would give you their parents' names - just to validate our findings so far.
I will type this up later with all the details. 1901 Census....all speculation :)

Hello Ladies
I have now put all this info onto my ft online and wow it grew so quickly...Cando, If you are able to type up the 1861 & 1851 census that would be grt... and again Cando re Emily Clarke with father Richard, we knew this to be fact as my fathers name is Richard and was not he was named after his mothers grandfathers line. So that would all line up
I have been to Freebdm.uk and have searched thru there and the search results do not come back with parents details for a birth or marriage and was wondering which records you are able to search to show all this to date...as I said I am relatively new to all this and still trying to find sites to help.
Already I feel I am going to have to find and join the Family Historian Annomynous group and admit that I am now a Family History Researcher ADDICTED...I am hooked... ;D
And this Index has Louisa and her mother arriving after Thomas??
Yes Essie I found out yesterday after talking to my father that he knew they came out on dif ships, this i find frustratrating considering I have asked him to tell me all he knew and he told me info but didn't add that bit, but he was surprised that with help i was able to find that info out.
So once again ladies many kind thanks for your help.

Not sure whether this will help, or be of interest, but I am pretty sure that the George ARTHUR mentioned earlier came out from Redruth, Cornwall. The living child who accompanied him and his wife on the Princess Royal was John ARTHUR (b. circa 1845 in St Ann's Parish, Cornwall, died 3 August 1922) as reported in the "The People's Weekly" Moonta, 5 August 1922.George's first(?) wife was Catherine nee Lemell as mentioned earlier. She died 22 April 1847, about 5 weeks after arriving in Aust.
He married and had a large family with N Elizabeth WILLCOCK (sometimes sp Woolcock and Willcox in records).
After Elizabeth's death he married Susannah Catherine LENNELL, nee Phillips. The Lennell name was apparently Linnell in English records. Susannah had a number of children, so the combined family was quite large.
George (married to Elizabeth Nickels / Nicholls / Nicolas) therefore not only had the siblings listed, but a half-brother and a number of step-brothers and step-sisters.
Maybe the family was quiet about forebears beause it was just too complex! ;D
-
I wrote above: "wife was Catherine nee Lemell as mentioned earlier." That should read "wife was Catherine nee PETERS."
Not sure why I wrote what I already new was suspect info but, as these records keep showing up in searches, thought I'd better correct myself.
Thanks to all those people who I've been in touch with and now know who I am - if you're part of this this tree and would like to be in touch, feel welcome.
