Hello Jean

do you relate to the Acton family from Lichfield who lost a son in WW1 called George J?

I am currently researching the local war memorials and his name is on it and  searching through this site I found this thread

Thanks

John

I would be interested in earlier Wilkes records if you have them.  Our family in the USA was connected to the Actons and some used the Acton name for their middle name.  Thank you.

Hi My Wilkes Family start with Edward Wilkes circa 1720 Feckenham Worcestershire,
My lines stays with all The Edwards down to Edward b 1812 Bewdley Worcs,
who marries Ann Acton.
my Acton line goes back to John Acton born 1659 Lichfield Staffordshire.

Thanks for your quick reply!  Do you know if there are any of that Wilkes line still living and have they had their DNA tested?  If so, do you have the DNA link?  We are making much progress in the US with our testing.   Our oldest proven ancestor is Francis Wilkes/Wilks b: est 1675-1715 d: winter 1744-1745.  His inventory was filed by his wife Grace (Unknown) Wilkes in Edgecombe Co., NC.  There was also a John Wilkes/Wilks who may have been his brother or father who owned land around that same area.   Francis's known sons were Thomas, Isaac, James, and Francis.  I descend through his son Isaac.   Thank you!

Thanks, the Masters or LeMaster name is associated to the Wilkes in mid-atlantic USA during the mid-late 1700's.  Since we don't know our ancestor's past the early 1700's, not sure where they came from.  There were quite a few Wilkes in New England, northeastern and mid-atlantic USA

PS:  DNA is now showing determining cousins within other surnames, so is very worth your while male or female.

I have created some Acton of Lichfield family trees using the IGI records online at:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

I am from a different Acton family but am interested to see if there is a link. My guess is that the earliest Acton in Lichfield (John Acton who married Mabell Bradbury at St Mary's, Lichfield 14 Jan 1679) must be a descendant of either:

- the Actons of Acton Hall (Worcestershire)
- the Actons of Acton Scott (Shropshire)
- the Actons of Aldenham (Shropshire)

These three Acton families have pedigrees in either the Visitation of Worcestershire (1569) or Shropshire (1623) and each of them can be traced back to at least the 14th Century.

I will post the tree seperately as it takes up too much space.

I'm returning to my Acton family search after a long break and very interested in Wonkelfish's posts.
Your records don't include my ancestor but I'm hoping you might have a link to:

Francis ACTON b. ca. 1833/4  in Litchfield (sic), Staffordshire, of father Thomas Acton (farm laborer).

Francis supplied these details on his marriage registration in Kingston Surrey in 1862 and on the birth certificate of his son in Queensland in 1872.  He migrated to Australia in 1862 and had 11 children named:

1.   Francis Herbert ACTON (1863 - )

2.   William Henry ACTON (1864 - 1865)

3.   Emma Jane ACTON (1865 - 1865)

4.   Ellen Elizabeth ACTON (1866 - )

5.   Emma Jane ACTON (2) (1869 - )

6.   John Walter ACTON (1870 - 1883)

7.   James Edgar ACTON (1872 - )

8.   Charles Henry ACTON (1874 - )

9.   Edward Lequire ACTON (1876 - )

10.   William Thomas ACTON (1878 - )

11.   Ada Maud ACTON (1882 - )

I cannot find any plausible record of Francis's birth and therefore his parents so would be grateful if anyone can see where he might fit.

Thanks.

Many thanks for that JeanLillian - this could well be my gggrandfather and his brother.  Presumably one or both of their parents had died, so you have given me a couple more avenues to search.

Hello,
Not sure if I have the same Francis Herbert Acton but the info I have is as follows:

Francis Herbert Acton was born in 1833 in Litchfield, Staffordshire. He married Elizabeth Brockwell (also from England) on 1 July 1862. It is in that same year, they arrived in Charters Towers, Queensland, Australia. Francis worked for some time in the gold mines there.

My connection is to their son - also called Francis Herbert Acton. He was born 27.6.1863 in Queensland. Married Elizabeth Jane Pemberton in 1883. He was a gold mine manager in Charters Towers, Queensland. They had 4 children that I am aware of.

Kind Regards,
Kerryn

Yes, This is the same family.  I am having trouble tracing them back to Lichfield.  My connection is to James Edgar Acton.
We also share the Brockwell family so let me know if you'd like a copy of Elizabeth's family tree.

That is great. Have only just started researching so would love what you have on Elizabeth Brockwell's family tree if possible?? My e-mail is *. Will let you know what else I happen to find on the Acton/Brockwell family.
Many thanks

Hi all,

I think the Francis Acton who went to Australia was actually born in Birmingham. Francis and his younger brother John were in Lichfield at the time of the 1841 Census, but there is no record of a baptism for either of them there. Although the dates are slightly off for Francis (he would have been 10 in 1841, not 9), I think this is his baptism record:

Name:   Francis Acton
Gender:   Male
Baptism/Christening Date:   26 May 1831
Baptism/Christening Place:   St. Philip, Birmingham, Warwick, England
Birth Date:   22 Oct 1830
Birthplace:   Suffolk Street
Father's Name:   Thomas Acton
Mother's Name:   Sarah

Then there is another baptism record for his brother John:

Name:   John Acton
Gender:   Male
Baptism/Christening Date:   31 Mar 1834
Baptism/Christening Place:   SAINT MARTIN,BIRMINGHAM,WARWICK,ENGLAND
Birth Date:   23 Mar 1833
Father's Name:   Thomas Acton
Mother's Name:   Sarah

There aren't any Francis or John Actons in Birmingham who correspond with these dates of birth in the 1841 Census, so it looks pretty likely that they are the right records for your ancestor and his brother.

Transcripts of the baptisms are available at:

Further to my last message, I also see two death records for a Thomas Acton in Birmingham in June quarter of 1838:

Surname: Acton
First name: Thomas
District: Birmingham
Volume: 16
Page: 255

Surname: Acton
First name: Thomas
District: Birmingham
Volume: 16
Page: 257

Either of the above could be the father of Francis and John. You can order a copies of the original records at:

Many thanks for the new info.  I looked up the two death entries and found (from copies of the original scans) that they are the same event and should actually read page 256 (instead of 255, 257 or 25-).  It appears three transcribers got it wrong or incomplete!  I have submitted corrections to FreeBMD.  Just goes to show it pays to look at the details carefully.  I can probably afford one certificate for a fishing expedition.

i got so excited when i found this thread, then realised it ended in 2012! I am also related to the Actons of Lichfield, Elizabeth Acton married John Warner and then my line began - all of the men in my family going back generations have Acton as a middle name, apparently we are linked to the Actons who own a large house somewhere!
