Title: George "Digger" Stanley- Boxer (Romany Gypsy Family)
Post by: Bluebutterflier on Wednesday 18 August 10 10:58 BST (UK)
Hi Everyone,

Im investigating my Fathers side of the family now....

'George "Digger" Stanley' was my Great Great Uncle...Theres a bit about him on the net, but mostly his boxing career...

Like his birth and death date: 28 February 1876 – 7 March 1919
Born: Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey, England.

I recall as a child being told stories about him from my great Aunts and my Nan.

Now this is where Im stuck....

My connection is as follows:

Great Grandmother/father Aida Stanley (nee Lane) and husband Bert Stanley had 13 kids...

One of their children Sylvie Stanley is my Nan....Her son Buster is my father. (Im Karla).

Now im lost, cos Im sure either Digger Stanley was my ggrandfathers father or uncle or even brother?....

I have attached a picture of my Great Grandfather Bert...(died 28th March 1961 aged 57) and his gravestone in which my great grandmother (fat mum) Aida Stanley is also buried. (died 7th march 1993 aged 88)

Both were Romany Gypsy decent, like all the rest in the family.

Any help would be appreciated.

And so the search begins...

Looks like he was my Great Great Great Uncle...

The information I found so far...

George Digger Stanley and Annetta Chesterman were married in 1902 in London.

OK im trying to figure this all out....

Parents:  George Stanley & wife?

Had children: George 'Digger' Stanley, Daylia Rebecca Stanley, Sarah Stanley, Frederick.

I think Daylia was my great great great grandmother...

I also found out this:

George 'Digger' Stanley had a wife called 'Cinderella' Stanley and they had 3 daughters:
Daylia, Sarah, Rebecca.

As seen in chart below...

Hi

George Stanley was aged 20 on his marriage at St Clement Nottinghill Kensington on 25th December 1902, a bachelor and a labourer of 133 St Ann's Road. His father was George Stanley a labourer. Annette Elizabeth Chesterman was aged 19, a spinster. Her occupation was waiter and her address 55 Stoneleigh Street. Her father was James Chesterman, a coachman.
George signed the register making his mark. The witnesses were Arthur Chesterman and Elizabeth Vincent.
The Stanley couple had a daughter baptised at All Saints Nottinghill on 3rd January 1904 Norah Elizabeth. Father's occupation on this baptism was athlete. The address was 28 Clifton Gardens.

GRAND-DAUGHTER OF GEORGE "DIGGER" STANLEY. Hi my maiden name was Kay Stanley (now Horsnell). my Mother was Violet Linda Stanley (nee Godleman) and my Father was John Henry Stanley who also had the nickname of "Digger" was THE SON of George "Digger" Stanley and Alice (nee Davis). I have a half sister (same father) name Patricia (whose grandmother to becca56). My dad had a sister known as Biddy (I think her real name was Ada) and a half brother (same Mother) named Fred (shortened I think).  I remember my Aunt Ada when I was small always wearing black. She had a stall in Portobello Road W11. She lived in Lancaster Road as did we, but at opposite ends. We moved to Portobello Road when I was 11 (I'm now 54). I remember her son Black Harry and also my dad's cousin Sylvie Stanley. If I remember right her daughter and I went to the same school Avondale Road Primary School or Holland Park Comprehensive (she was either a year older or younger than me). My dad also went to Avondale  school but in his day it had a different name. I am at present researching my family tree and alot of what's written is conflicting but will get to the bottom of it eventually.

Hi, I haven't come accross a Lilliana as one of my Grandfather's sisters. Are you able to find out anyone elses name within your family that were born say between 1870 and 1917 as thats when his children were born or whether Lilliana was a wife of a brother.  I was contacted a short time back and have been in contact with my Grandfather's eldest son (also a George) via his great grandson's new wife.  I have gone back as far as about 1800 in the family.  My family tree is on Ancestry.com.  If you want to speak to me then please let me have your email or phone number.

Hi, Digger was my Great, Great Uncle.  I am looking for any info also, confused on the wifes name there seems to be another woman mentioned in the chat site other than Cinderella, but my family states there was a Cinderella...   I don't have a lot of info but my sister does as she is very active in the investigation.  I beleive that Digger was my grandfathers uncle and my grandfather was Jim (james horatio stanley) married to Sophia Rosetta (nee saunders). Born at the turn of the century 1890-1899.  Im am very new to this site could you tell me how to research a little better?  Thank you I will post anything I can.

Can anyone tell me who Digger's mother was?  and for sure his fathers name was George?  Some posts are stating that his father was Diveris or Diver?  but there is no name for the wife.  I thought George was Diggers father and Diggers real name.  Thank you.  Digger was my Grandfathers uncle, and my Grandfathers name was James Horatio Stanley, he was born in the late 1890's and was also Romany Gypsy decent.  Does anyone have any Saunders relations to the Stanleys as I know they were intertwined all through

Hi Valda.  I've read your post about Digger and all the census info which is very informative, however all the ages are wrong.. is that normal.  If Cinderella was 61 when she died she couldn't have been on the census at 68 right?  Im new to this so I appologize but just trying to get a jist of it all.   Could you advise, where else I might be able to search online for free?
Thank you.

HI,

George is a relative somewhere along my tree.  I am not quite sure where he fits in at the moment.  I have only just been informed about him.
He is related to my 3rd great grandfather William who was born in 1793 and sent to Australia as a convict for stealing a horse.

Any info would be appreciated.

Hey,

I was told by my Granddad today that we are distantly related to the boxer Digger Stanley, my Great Great Grandmother was apparently related to him. Her name was Mabel Lamb, Smith was her maiden name. Her Husband was Riley Lamb - I wondered if anyone on this thread know those names and how they were related? Thanks!

Yet another Digger Stanley descendant question. Is anyone is aware of another child of Dahlia/Daylia Stanley? I am trying to determine if my great grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Burrows, is Digger's granddaughter. She was "Gypsy" (didn't use the word Roma), and may have been born around 1887-1890, possibly in Ponytpool, Monmouthshire, Wales.

I've read through the posts on this topic, and don't see this question. My apologies if I just overlooked something. Sarah Elizabeth was:
•   Documented to have lived in the Coed e Gric aka Griffithstown poorhouse (in 1911 and 1939).
•   Documented to have died there in 1953.
•   DNA appears to indicate a relationship with Stanleys, and Coopers.
•   DNA appears to indicate a Berrows/Burrows, Matthews/Mathews, Couzens, Parsons relationship.
•   There is only person, Allen Burrows, who I can find as a bridge between those families.
•   Per electoral registers, Allen Burrows lived together with Dahlia/Daylia Stanley after her children with William Rose were born.
•   However, Sarah Elizabeth was born before Dahlia’s children with William Rose.
•   And, depending on the actual birth year, Dahlia may have been pretty young to have children when Sarah Elizabeth was born.

Thoughts? Insights? I’ve gotten to the proverbial brick wall!

I'm posting a similar question to this in the Roma board as well – I hope that isn't violating any rules.
Best,
Jan
