This link is an extract of an Office of National Statistics database, and contains a list of surnames in use in England, Wales and the Isle of Man in September 2002.
The list contains almost 270,000 surnames, shared by 54.4 million people.

Mum's maiden name Hopkins = 32,592, ranking is 197. Not too bad, I guess.
Having two out of four HIGH ranking key surnames is made up for having the other two being LOW ranking:
Grandma's maiden name Fereday = 1184, ranking is 5777.
Nan's maiden name (BTW, my Nan is German) Foelke = 'No records were found'.

I had a rare name called HUSTHWAITE with ranked 55026 as there was a count of only 44.
On the other hand my direct line ROWLEY ranked 448 and counted 16183, only slightly lower than PRATT ranked 404 and counted 18255. Not bad going, though I also rank first with SMITH with 652563! followed by JONES second with 538874. Do I have the record? Who is last in the rankings?

Bearman my maiden name 1,103 ranking = 6,140 I never met one apart from immediate family when growing up because we were living in the North of England and it is a southern name.
The line I am having the most difficulty with (read stopped dead in my tracks) JOHNSON 193260 10th!

Think I might have just come accross one of the rarest surnames in England..... Swall.
It is a derivative of Swale and although there are many in the census records most of them are mistranscribed Swales.
They were originally from Kaber in Westmorland and now are centred (if you can centre two!) around North Allerton.
There were 7 in the 2007 electoral register and I am told by a lady who had Swall as her maiden name that there are just 2 now.
Has anyone come across a rarer one?

All fairly manageable I think. The reason I would do any of these is the strong possibility of a common origin of each.

You wouldn't half have a strange game of chess if the number of pieces you had was proportionate to the surname occurrences, though.
There are:-
113,489 Kings
973 Queens
35,253 Bishops
61,693 Knights
8,763 Castles, along with 2,129 Rooks
But no Pawns at all (nor Prawns, nor Shrimps, nor Porns)
I did, however, find 5 Serfs.
And ... since they have not counted names with fewer than 5 occurrences ... that makes Serf one of the (equal) rarest rated names.

Here in Australia, you would have to factor in names such as Tran, or Nguyen as well.

All four of my grandparents have counts of under 1000, one of them (my own birth surname) is under 250.
On one hand this should make it easier researching relatively rare surnames. But because they are not common there is probably a much higher chance of lots of spelling variations on records and in mistranscriptions from those records.
I can understand on old records a lot of variations because literacy levels weren't high and spelling was more flexible.
But even in the 1960s / 1970s it was surprising the number of different ways our local newsagent could spell our six letter / two syllable surname when marking up the papers for delivery.

Going through the tree and the rarest I can find is Gauler, with only 25 and ranked =78,618th . From all the research I've done they are all related! :)
