Title: Site of an old catholic convent in Aigburth Liverpool
Post by: lordship on Saturday 21 August 10 15:29 BST (UK)
Can anyone help me please ?

I visit Liverpool a couple of times a year.  I once stayed in a convent in Aigburth area of Liverpool which was run by the Little Sisters of the Poor.  This order of sisters cared for the elderly and I remember the buildings were quite old.  I think the Little Sisters sold the site in the 1980's, but I would really love to visit the site and to know what has been built in its place.  This order also had a home in Belmond Road Liverpool which has also been sold.  As my aunt is now a very elderly member of the community, I would really love any information I can get about these convents, as I have very happy memories of visits there.

Hi

Welcome to Rootschat

The Little Sisters of the Poor have a website so you could try contacting them direct

http://www.littlesistersofthepoor.org/

Liverpool Archives holds some documentation on the convent

Title St Augustine's Home for the Poor, Aigburth (Little Sisters of the Poor)

Date 1958

RefNo 731 TYS/19/3

Extent one file

The record office is closed for development but they will still be answering email enquiries so they can probably direct you to the present day site of the convent

Thanks Valda
Yes Im aware of the website for the Little Sisters.  As I already mentioned, my aunt is one of the community of (the now) elderly sisters.  They do not now have a convent in Liverpool which is a real pity - they have homes in Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, etc.  I just wanted to know what development now stan ds on the site of the former St. Augustines.  Anyway, tha nks for your reply.

Hi lordship

Welcome to Rootschat, perhaps a Moderator could move this to the Lancashire Board, there are a couple of Rootschatters who live close to this area of Liverpool and may be able to help you.

Hiya and Welcome to Rootschat
The Little Sisters of the Poor on Aigburth road is now St Charles Parochial Social Club...my Aunty Kate(my dads great Aunt) went to the building when she was 80 and I visited there quite often...I was only about 8 so we are talking late 1950`s here...I am 99% certain of it`s position, BUT if I am wrong I apologise ....I would think if you visited St Charles the Priest would give you the relevant info.it is in between
Tramway Road and Burdett Street on Aigburth Road.....allan ;)

I don't think this is the same convent but if anyone can help I would be grateful.
My aunt Clara Pilkington was born in Accrington in 1897. She was baptised in the C of E but I know she was in a RC convent in Liverpool. I think it was the Convent of the Good Shepherd Woolton/Wavertree. In about 1950 my parents and I visited her at the convent. That involved a tram ride from central Liverpool. I have looked on maps but can't find the site. Does anyone know where it was? I would also like to find a record of her death/burial. ???

Hello your Lordship.. ;)

There was a convent on Aigburth road Grassendale end
on the corner of Grassendale road and Aigburth road
it was turned into a housing estate late 80s early 1990s.
if you look it up on google maps
you will see the garage on the corner at one side
it is not too far from Aigburth Cricket club on Aigburth road
it also is a little further up from the catholic church
on the opposite side of the road called st Austins

The Aigburth site has been well covered here I just thought I would add that the Poor Sisters' residence that was formerly at Belmont Grove/Belmont Road Liverpool was called St Joseph's Home. The building was demolished and housing is now on the site.

Hi

There used to be a site on Aigburth road which is now an housing estate
You now need to get to the estate via Grassendale road off Aigburth road,
if you go on google maps and put in Ranelagh drive south.
this is assuming you know how to use the maps facilty sorry
anyhow, find Ranelagh drive sth and drop the yellow man on Aigbuth road facing Ranelagh
if you look across the road from here, you will see the old walls and gate area of the convent
so really it will be Grassendale rather than Aigburth,
if its the correct palce that is

ps the estate is called Montford Drive off Grassnedale road

Just passing through collecting and verifying information for my book of family memories "Love and War in Cuba."

My mother, her sisters and my own sisters attended La Sagesse, Catholic Girls School,  in diverse times stretching perhaps the late 1920s to 1948.

My brother Lionel (now deceased) and I attended St. Austins School across the way for a time at the end of WWII and a little later.  Classes were held in the old building, and Mrs. Jones was the headmistress.  I was expelled for resisting telling on one of my fellow students....and went on to attend St. Edwards,

This apparently did little harm because eventually I became a professor at Oregon State University, in the US...

My mother Leonela (Lela), and her sisters Manuela, Bitina and probably Lucia attended apparently traveling by tram (the 'green goddess') from the Cuban consulate where grandfather Calixto Garcia-I~niguez Enamorado was consul general from the late nineteen twenties to the middle nineteen thirties.

Aunt Bitina would tell me about throwing pennies at the knees of the boys that bothered them...

Lionel and I would pass that cricket club each school day as we came from Cooper Avenue,

Not sure if this has been answered satisfactorily but there was a convent on Woodlands Road Aigburth but closed down about 10 years ago. Its a fabulous building standing empty.

That's very interesting, Larry Daley. I went to La Sagesse Prep and when Harold Wilson closed that down I went to St Austin's, but a bit later than your dates. I enjoyed my time at La Sagesse and would have liked to go back after the 11 plus, but went to Bellerive instead. I made my first communion at La Sagesse. claytonbradley

Hello,

I have just found this discussion and would like to ask if anybody recognises this photo.  I was told my grandfather worked as a gardener for the nuns but I don't know which convent and wondered if this photo was the convent.  My grandfather lived in Fearnside Street off Earle Road.

Hi,
I can't be sure but I think this statue / garden shrine was in the grounds of St. Augustine's, the home for the elderly run by the Little Sisters of the Poor. I only saw it on a couple of occasions in the 1970s when my great aunt was there. It was round the back of the building somewhere, close to the car park and it looked rather different, but I think that was owing to different plants and a repainted wall in the background.

The semi-circular archway in which the statue has been placed and the little formal garden in front of it is what looks familiar to me. I've been back to look at the photo several times, but St. Augustine's is the only place where I can remember seeing the formal garden affair in front of the statue.

Any other suggestions, anyone ?
Joney

Lordship: Your answer is contained in this link https://www.stcharles.org.uk/church/nojshistory.php
LSOTP Aigburth owned their land from 1885. They sold part of it enabling the building of St Charles Church next door. I also visited the home to see a relative living there in the care of LSOTP. It was an immaculate, caring haven.
