This photo belonged to my Taid, Robert Owen Jones. The gent on the right is Thomas Roberts, who was a close friend of his - I have three photo's of them together.
I think it could have been taken Fron, or close to there.

My Taid on the left, Thomas Roberts again on the right, taken 1930 - 1940 ish
Any help appreciated in identifying exactly who Thomas Roberts was ???

Hi Hiraeth,
Whoops, never even thought to look at the census - must be the wine gums affecting my thinking ::)
It's a possibility. Now need to find out where Aled House was !!
Thanks,
Glenys

I have found him in 1891, aged 24, butcher, living Henllan with John H.Jones, farmer and butcher.
Is there a kind person out there who is able to look in 1911 for the abovementioned Thomas Roberts, butcher, and his wife Anne ??

I have now found Aled House in 1911 census, but unfortunately Thomas and Anne Roberts were no longer living there.
It was next to Vron Cottage.
I still cannot find Thomas Roberts, butcher !!!

In photo 1 can you make out the name on the window panel above the door to the left of the shop. This may tie in with some census results (next door to Aled House etc)
Also, have you posted them before or maybe they're on a website? They look familiar.

Gwil,
I have tried to make out the name above the door in the house adjacent to the butchers, but cannot.
I have posted this photo on the Nantlle site - think it is on the Penygroes village page, because even though Thomas Roberts lived upper Llandwrog, I thought his shop was in Penygroes - I may be wrong !!!!!

Update.
Found 1911 - Caernarvonshire/Llandwrog, District 16, page 274 -
Thos Roberts, 43, butcher, born Henllan, Denbighshire
Annie 45, wife born Rhostryfan.
name unreadable, daughter, 16, born Rhostryfan. (Not on 1901)
Mary Jones, 15, single, servant, born Talysarn.
Address - TEGFAN, Upper Llandwrog. This is I am now certain the name above the door in the photo.
The address on the census page before is Bryntwrog Terrace; the page after is Haulfryn.
One problem solved and another one is found....what is their daughter's first name, she wasn't on the 1901!!!!!!!!!!! ???

Could it be Nellie?
Regards
Roger

Roger thanks, it's a possibility, though I cant find a Nellie Roberts in 1901 :-\
On the 1911, it says Thomas and his wife Anne have been married 18 years, had three children,
two of whom have died...there weren't any children with them in 1901 !!
OOOh heck, just as I solve one problem, up comes another. ::)
-
Could the age have been transcribed incorrectly(by a decade!)?There is a birth of a Nellie Roberts registered in Llandwrog in 1904 on www.northwalesbmd.org.uk

That's a thought....................

I've been rooting around on the Welsh Newspaper archive site - a couple of mentions of Thomas Roberts of Tegfan - mostly in connection with Cesarea chapel apart rom a court case between John Robert Roberts, Glandwr Stores, Llanberis who sued Thomas Roberts, Tegfan, Upper Llandwrog, and John H. Griffith, Ffridd Llwyd, Upper Llandwrog for £1 15s owed for rent for Bryn Fferam Slate Quarry between March and July 1915.
For a retail shop owner he doesn't come up much in the papers, unlike my lot of publicans in Bethesda
-
There are two deaths in the name of Nellie Roberts in Llandwrog 1912(North WalesBMD),one of which probably matches with a FreeBMD record of a 7 year old in Caernarfon district.

Mabel,
Interesting, thanks for finding that; wonder why a butcher would be renting a slate quarry?
Roger,
More thanks to you......if only we could find baptism for the 1904 Nellie Roberts.

I haven't got any further with this family.
Wondered if this house "Tegfan" is still there, also shop premises next door??

There is a Tegfan,Upper Llandwrog at postcode LL54 7BD.If you have Google Earth you could perhaps try to find it(postcodes are an acceptable search term)
I think it is likely that Nellie's birth registration is under Ellen or Eleanor, for which Nellie is often the diminutive.
There is an Ellen Roberts registrtation in 1904 in Llandwrog on the www.northwalesbmd.org.uk site-ref. 1904 CAERB/3/45/25,and one for an Eleanor ref. 1904 CAERB3/44/96.Unfortunately there are no mothers maiden name to help. There is also an Ellen Ann.
A phone enquiry to the local registry offiice may help identify if any are correct.

Taken a while..........thanks to 1921 census I have found Thomas Roberts born 1867 Henllan, Denbighshire, with wife Annie born 1866 Llanwnda, together with employee, Evan Thomas born 1901, butcher employed by Thomas Roberts, living Tegfan, Upper Llandwrog.
1939 finds Thomas Roberts, widowed, living 1 Meillionydd, Upper Llandwrog.
Whilst Evan Thomas is now living Tegfan, Upper Llandwrog, butcher, married to Maggie, son Ieuan born 1935, with three children redacted.
So a partial success; doesn't look like any of his three children survived. It would have been so good to have been in contact with his descendants and tell them of Thomas Roberts' friendship with my taid, which lasted even when my taid left Caernarvonshire.
