Title: Any idea on a date?
Post by: Darwin on Monday 30 August 10 20:32 BST (UK)
I was given this last week but it's a low resolution so I'm not requesting any enhancements. I might be able to get a higher resolution at a later date and come back to you experts!

Meanwhile, what are your thoughts on the date and ages of the ladies here?

You'll get a more expert opinion on dates, but I'd say mother and daughter - 65-70 at front and 45-50 at the back.  Does that fit?

The lady at the back is wearing a style popular from the turn of the century. The older lady is still wearing the Gigot sleeve of the 1890's which had just about had it's day by this time but was still seen as a good day dress by older ladies. The cardstock is also 1900's.So,1900-03 I would say.

Not to disagree with Jim (hi Jim :D) but while the older lady is wearing a sleeve which looks like an 1890s gigot at the shoulder, the lower part of the sleeve is the baggier style seen during the early years of the 20th Century.

So I'd place both ladies' clothing in the time frame suggested by Jim, around 1900ish....my 2 cents' worth ;D

Cheers,
China

Thanks for the replies.

We aren't sure who they are so the date and rough age of the ladies is very helpful.

How would such a photo happen? Would a photographer just travel around the area offering to take people's photos? The card says Grantown on Spey but we didn't have any family closer than 23 miles from there.

EDIT:
Just found this link about the photographer http://www.strathspey-herald.co.uk/news/fullstory.php/aid/3952/Family_pair_love_to_look_at_life_through_a_lens.html

It seems he did travel around the area taking photos but he didn't arrive in Grantown until 1908.

Yes, there were photographers who operated out of studios and also some who travelled around in search of business.
